I've helped a lot of friends get into firearms and it is scary how many people actually believe, or seem to believe, the first one. I personally think there would be a lot less hate for firearms if more people were exposed to proper firearm etiquette. Like something along the lines of how drivers ed used to be a part of schools.
@Haphaestus, I can get behind that. Even a basic quiz to determine they know how a safety works would be good
@Haphaestus, Or the way hunter education used to be at school. When I've shown my hunting shotgun to non-hunting friends, I've noticed that many put their finger right on the trigger.
@Haphaestus, seriously, TREAT IT LIKE ITS LOADED NO MATTER WHAT, all it takes is a slight miscalculation and BAM someones dead
@MCPO S117, right. But people who haven't been exposed to proper gun safety do not always do that. I'd personally say that the big drawback to gun related media that we enjoy now isn't that it makes people want to go out and shoot somebody, but that people are far more comfortable with firearms when they shouldn't be. This can very easily lead to serious accidents. Checking the action, magazine, and safety should always be the first thing done when handling a firearm. Knowing when and how to do this has the potential to save lives, which is an excellent reason to offer it as an OPTION in schools. I do not believe that it would ever come to pass if it were mandatory.
@Haphaestus, it would become politicized so fast that its true purpose would be lost immediately i would imagine
@MCPO S117, Unfortunately that's a very real possibility. I would love to be able to have some semblance of an ideal outcome, but firearms are such a divisive issue that it is unlikely much progress is going to be made in this area. As hard as I might try, I confess to get up in arms myself when the topic of restriction comes up. It's a hot button issue for a reason. There's a lot of passion, justified or misplaced, on both sides.
@Haphaestus, here in California, you have to take a basic knowledge test before you are allowed to purchase a firearm. You get a card and it is good for three years or so then you have to renew it.
@Sir Borksalot , I feel like that's the right idea for sure, but, having taken that type of class, they can often be overly simplified. Often completed within a couple days. A prolonged, in depth class would allow instructors to instill a respect for the weapon that might not withstand the test of time otherwise. Though obviously some level of information, no matter how cursory, is a fat sight better than none whatsoever.
@Haphaestus, my friend and I go shooting sometimes but everytime we go he never puts the safety on until he actually puts the gun down. He just says "dude it's ok my finger is the safety" and he owns way more guns than me. It makes me cri evry tim
@Haphaestus, rule 1: a firearm is loaded, treat it as such, even if you just took out every bullet/shell/whatever.
Rule 2: do not point it anywhere you have no intention of firing at.
Rule 3: is the safety on? Good, but still follow 1 and 2, better safe than sorry.
Rule 4: your kids may show interest. Drill the first 3 into their heads before you let them even touch it, and never when you are not around. Exposure to a gun early on likely means they aren't gonna be so enthusiastic later to get at your gun.
@Haphaestus, my school offered it. We shot BB guns during that.
Someone show Alec Baldwin this post.
@MrDigBick, shots fired
This is fvcking hilarious.
1. Treat every weapon as if it were loaded
2. Keep your finger off the trigger and on the trigger guard until ready to fire
3. Never, NEVER aim at anything you do not intend to destroy. Seriously.
4. Know your target and be sure of its background (beware of potential ricochet, weak walls mean someone on the other side could be injured, etc.)
PSA: Don't do any of this, kids.
@DeadXOnyx, for the love of God, please don't. Lol
Actually, the first rule of firearm safety is to have fun and be yourself

I had to go to gun training with a written and physical test. 6 different guns on how to dismantle and check etc. Canada btw.
@X088, should’ve come to Murica. We give them away like candy with no rules whatsoever.
@BigJohnson86, I’ll admit. Your gun ranges are a lot more fun
It's all fun and games until that intruder in the night is one of your kids..
Are these rules for someone with a gun in a horror movie? Feels like it
As a Certified Pistol instructor, I can confirm these are the 4 rules.
Ok there are a lot of gun memes what happened?
@atlas12349, Alec Baldwin did a big bad and should be in jail, but he won't because of celebrity privelege.
