I like the idea of god and the devil being business associates more than immortal enemies. Anyone else?
@Pouldershads, I always thought God though of the devil as a nuisance more than anything and got rid of him. Maybe to the devil they're enemies. But it's like the shoe vs ant scenario here I think.
@Pouldershads, atheist like the idea of science. Anyone else?
@BunnyGruff, ...crap that makes more sense! Now i have Nothing funny to comment
@Pouldershads, I never understand why the devil punishes bad people like that's helping god
@dova, Science isn't exclusively for atheists.
@BunnyGruff, I think if God wanted Satan gone, he'd be gone.
Like you said, shoe vs ant.
One ant doesn't ruin a picnic, if you get what I mean.
@dova, never said i believed in them
@BunnyGruff, more like ant vs slightly larger ant.
*insert offended comment here*
@I Are Lebo, unless it gets in the potato salad (SpongeBob)
@Pouldershads, I like to think of them as close friends who go to the bar for a couple of cold ones every Saturday.
@BunnyGruff, if there is a god and he/it could oust satan if he wanted, yet doesn't, this really calls into question gods morals
@Bermy Juice, devil doesn't punish people. At Least, not according to the Bible. God punishes people, Satan is there to tempt humans into evil and lead them astray. He eventually is gonna get thrown into hell along with the humans, and he won't be the ruler like many think, he is actually the one with the least power.
@Pouldershads, According to the Bible, there is no "competition" between God and Satan. Satan is part of God's creation, and therefore he has absolutely 0 power over God. God allows him to have power on earth in order to test humans strength/faith.
@BunnyGruff, although your scenario is much better, I don't think God looks at Satan as a nuisance, but more as a necessary evil. He has absolutely no power over God, and doesn't cause "dilemmas" for God, God basically has him there in order to test the Saints & Sinners
@Luna 5, Satan's presence and not being destroyed deals with free-will. God wants both ends of the spectrum to be laid out for all of mankind to be able to chose from.
@I Are Lebo, yeah I agree, although the Bible does say that one day Satan will be cast into hell for all eternity once he has served his purpose. The reason for Satan still being around, though, is so that each human gets a choice between these two opposite ways of life.
@theFortunateApple, sounds like a stupid choice to give people you want to worship you. Especially when he made us
@theFortunateApple, here is my problem with Christianity. Where are you getting this info from?
I look at it the same way I look at the stories about the Olympians or the tales of the halls of Valhalla. It's myth. It is literally mythology.
Satan isn't real. The persona of a red skinned horned man bearing a pitchfork is a vilification of the Greek Gods Dionysius and Poseidon, in order to vilify the pagan practices and increase the standing of Christianity.
And while God may or may not be real, his image as an old bearded man is taken directly from the portrayal of Zeus.
It's important to understand history. Christianity has absorbed a few other religions in its expansion, and has itself been changed by it. First and foremost, religion is a tool of control. Whether it's used to promote goodness and civility like Christianity, community and family culture like Judaism, or power over others and intolerance like extremist Islam, religion is NOT following the orders of a supreme being
@I Are Lebo, or omnipotent force. It's following the word of people claiming to hear the word of such a being.
I have respect for people with faith. I have no respect for people with blind faith.
@I Are Lebo, I agree on most of that, actually, Christianity (along with many other religions) has been used as a tool of control, absolutely. However, the Bible itself has remained for the most part unaltered, allowing for Christians to derive their true faith from the Bible itself, and not all the false perceptions, opinions, and alterations surrounding it. This makes it much more difficult for someone to manipulate Christianity for their own agendas, however it is obvious that people do manipulate it. Back in the Dark Ages the catholic church exploited huge masses of the population using guilt and a host of other tactics to control the people, and the main reason for the success of this, plainly, was that Catholicism restricted the common people from reading the Bible for themselves (not outrightly, but they only allowed the Latin translation, which most uneducated people in the middle ages did not speak.). Men like Martin Luther called it out for what it was, which was corruption.
@I Are Lebo, ran out of space in my last comment, anyways, There have also been issues with certain sects and cults, such as Mormonism, in which they add their own book of the Bible, which, if you have a thorough understanding of the Bible, you can obviously discern its inconsistency with the original text. The Mormons, however, point to any discontinuities and blame it on faulty translations, and generally encourage their people to read only the book of Mormon, again, restricting the actual derivation of faith from the Bible itself. Now, another point many make is simply, "why Christianity?", and I can only tell you that the one reason that I accept the Christian beliefs above those of any other religion is the fact that all of the Gospel of the Bible and the ideals presented line up directly with my personal conscience, which dictates what I know as morally right.
@I Are Lebo, As for all of the mythology, twisting of the word and such, the Bible itself says that Satan's most treacherous work is in the church. If Satan's main goal in life is to rip every human away from God and drag them to hell to accompany him, one of the best ways to do it is mudslinging. That is, make the church, and God, look bad, by at every interval twisting every event to his advantage. All those who are in power in the church are under constant demonic attack, and if they are not sound un their faith, they can easily be corrupted, (mind you that Satan and his demons are crafty above all else, far more brilliant than any human, so convincing them of lies is easy), thus, the Christian faith can have its reputation dragged through the mud with every scandal, and hypocritical event possible to make it seem as though we are different from no other corrupt human, only seeking to better our agenda and further our power.
@angrydwarf, its all about free will. Humans cannot love without free will, which is ultimately all that God desires, our love. God could easily have made robots with no choice whatsoever but to worship him, but God wanted to love and to be loved, a goal only attainable through free will, which is why the choice is available for all humans.
@theFortunateApple, well to me, a great many things in the bible don't make sense and sound more like the laws of a monarch than laws set by an all loving God. I would never tell people to leave their faith, I only tell people to use it more as a guideline to live. But some things just don't make sense which is what honestly throws me off about religion. Doesn't help that my step father is a pastor and him and my mother laugh at evolution, even though it makes more sense than a invisible all powerful man in the sky making every living thing imaginable....but I guess it's all up to personal beliefs
@angrydwarf, exactly. Faith and logic MUST go together.
Religious doctrines that coincide with a logic take on right and wrong and a personal conscience are fine. It's when religious doctrines cross the line into the territory of invasive practices that I have a problem.
Show me a religious man who damns someone for being gay and I'll show you an ignorant bigot with a high chance of being a closeted self hating homosexual.
@I Are Lebo, I agree wholeheartedly
@I Are Lebo, if the New Testament was made by Jesus coming along and stripping out the outdated stuff from the Old Testament, we need him to come back and do it again.
"A man shall not lie with another man as he would a woman" is as outdated as "if a woman is to be married and has lain with another man she shall be stoned, and out to death".
@Bermy Juice, I don't believe in either, but I heard it explained once that it's not so much the devil is punishing you but more so that you are being punished along side him, he's just merely trying to tempt you into sharing his fate. But there are multiple variations because the whole faith is a smorgasbord of various religions of the time.
@I Are Lebo, you really do have a way with words my friend. Bravo.
@Captain Charles Vane, the point still is that the concept of the devil, and of hell itself, is ludicrous. Most people don't have a strong concept of time (not having the right perspective to do so). The idea that something like choosing the wrong religion will damn you for eternity? Christians talk about God giving us free will because he is a benevolent God, then turn around and claim that if we make the wrong choices, he will punish us for ever. That isn't benevolent, it's malevolent.
Let me put it this way. A father has two sons. He loves them both very much. He takes them to a toy store and tells them to pick out any one toy. They're free to pick anything.
The first son comes back with a G.I. Joe action figure. The father praises him and lets him go play for as long as he wants.
The second son comes back with a Barbie doll. The father scolds him and punishes him by locking him in the basement.
Is he a kind and caring father? Or is he a trickster demanding obedience?
@I Are Lebo, o yeah I'm completely with you, I'm no fan of Chirstianity, I just meant to offer the explanation Bermy was looking for.
@Captain Charles Vane, @I Are Lebo, it's the same concept. If we only have free will so that we can fail to do the right thing, then God is literally setting us up for failure and rewarding the few who still succeed. That's evil.
But the real reason I don't believe in God is simple. I have a simple list.
Low functioning Autism
Inherited substance addiction
Chronic pain syndrome
ALS (Lou Gerigs disease)
Any serious degenerative disease
Genetic malignant neoplasms (non environmental cancers)
Manic depressive disorders (bipolar)
The list goes on, but I think I made my point. The fact that all these (and many more) ailments, that have no cures (many of which, by their nature, can never have cures), exist, to me, are proof that if there is a God, he is neither not all knowing, or he is not benevolent.
I have chronic pain. It wasn't caused by an injury. It just started when I was 14
@I Are Lebo, I'm 27. As of next year, I will have been in pain for half of my life.
I'm on prescription painkillers and medicinal marijuana. I have Minor Degenerative Disc Decay. This means my pain will never get better, only worse.
Someone who tells me that "it's all part of Gods plan" is someone that I want to punch in the mouth. If his plan involves unnecessary suffering, by definition, it is an evil plan.
Sorry for the ranting. I just don't get these people.
@I Are Lebo, all good, I'm a spiritual man, but I don't believe in a deity, the best way to explain my spirituality is the Force. The reason I don't believe in a diety god is simple, they are all man made stories, if god wants to talk to me that's cool I'll hear him out, if some dude 2000 years ago wants me to believe he spoke FOR god I'm sorry but that's bs. I can relate to the chronic pain, I was in a minor fender bender at the beginning of the year and got a concussion, no where near my first, since then I've gotten the run around from probably close to 10 doctors now that won't see me because it's related to a car accident and my day to day life consists of blinding headaches and nausea from the vertigo amongst a bunch of other fun sh¡t, weed is the only thing that's offered any relief but my parents only see it as a drug and since I can't work I'm left sitting in a dark room in pain most of the time, really this community and my gf have been the only things that have kept me sane.
@Captain Charles Vane, I don't know who had the audacity to downvote you for sharing your story, but fück them. Thank you for sharing.
I can empathize. I've gotten a couple concussions, fortunately mine were more minor.
Also, there is so much evidence that Jesus (whose name is a mistranslation of yunatan, which properly translates into Jonathan) was a mortal man who dedicated his life to trying to improve the lives of everyone around him.
That's admirable enough without having to add divinity into the mix. I mean, the Church wasn't formed until nearly 400 years after the man died.
I'm all for religious freedoms. If you find comfort and direction from religion, that's great.
But don't present tales and fables to me as if they are fact. They aren't.
@I Are Lebo, i toyed with the idea that God created evolution meaning those diseases (ailments or whatever theyre called) were only indirectly created by Him, instead of Him creating everything directly
@PotatoOnion, I tried responding to you, but every post I made was refused, in spite of the complete lack of anything even resembling offensive or mature content.
@Stuckpixel, please. I'm so sick of asking this. Fix or remove the goddamn censor. It's fvcking broken. Hell, you don't censor uploads. Fvcking fix it.
@I Are Lebo, and FYI, that post that got through the censor, contained profanity. My previous posts, which did t get through, didn't. Fix it.
@I Are Lebo, just email them instead of saying it here...i doubt they'll be able to get it here:P
@PotatoOnion, good advice
@I Are Lebo, good luck with that ☺
I always thought it was a comet. But nope giant holy nuke

@buzz killinton, Much like the Holy Handgrenade. But much much better.
@buzz killinton, Holy Hand Grenades are no joke.
What a coincidence, I was created from too much drinking as well
