Because, for white America at least, it was a time of economic prosperity, political consensus, and mass consumerism of goods that made life easier (especially for women). And for America in general, it was when fights for equality (or reparations) for all sorts of disenfranchised people (women, black people, Hispanic people, Native Americans, etc.) began to gain some traction.
But the real answer is that we like the 1950s because we like to romanticize history. We remember poodle skirts and dances, and we forget about things like the Little Rock Integration Crisis.
However, it's not necessarily bad to romanticize an era as long as it's acknowledged that bad things happened, as bad things happen in any era at any place or time in history. We, as a species, tend to romanticize everything, not just the history of our own respective countries, but world history as well. It's typical behavior. We remember the good and forget the bad. This is psychologically normal.
@Ruupasya, yeah but people are like "I wish it was the fifties again so I could do X" but like you can still do it now and probably way better
@Ruupasya, how did you fit such a long comment here? Whenever I post a long comment stuck pixel is like NOPE and deletes everything I wrote without posting it
@Ruupasya, So you're telling me the 90's weren't so great?
@Gay Rattlesnake , I agree.
@Awc123awc, that's probably close to the maximum length. When I hit the max length, it just stops letting me type. I use Funny Pics on iPhone.
@Gay Rattlesnake ,
@Ruupasya, Plus we just finished a major war that, in our eyes, we won, and we hadn't yet started some other wars we were going to get into.
@Lt Dubble Bubble, that's another very good point. Also the rise of suburbia and suburban culture.
@Ruupasya, I like the 50's because everyone wasn't offended unlike today
@Ruupasya, dude chill
@Ruupasya, As a history nerd, I must say: well said.
@Ruupasya, Yes indeed, Rosy Retrospect, as it's called. Well said!
@Ruupasya, lengthy as it was I love this comment. Thank you sir, for restoring a little hope in me that intelligent and articulate people still exist out there somewhere.
@Ruupasya, it was a rhetorical question. Not intended for a basis answer.
@Awc123awc, they only have it set to make comments if you say certain "bad" words or if you have two words that together make one of those words even though there is a space between them. For example If you had a comment that said some like "fiSH" and then your next word began with "IT" it would make the comment disappear without even giving you a chance to reorder the wording to remove the issue.
@George Feeny, and it does it with a few other words I don't know why some are fine and some are not but it's just how it goes.
@George Feeny, fish it
@George Feeny, huh never mind it is now allowing that word apparently.
@Ruupasya, this is true. Look at the Golden Age of Piracy. Being a pirate sucked; you were essentially an unemployed ex-sailor for your respective Navy, got paid jack-shjt, and if you didn't port every few years or so to get some food that wasn't dried meat and rum, you died of one or more of a multitude of diseases. Many pirates also spent months at sea with no catches, and were essentially homeless degenerates trying to eke out a living.
Still one of my favorite periods of history, though.
@Not Actually a Corgi, there's also the cowboy era. Mostly unwashed sweaty smelly people and it's a really cool era to romanticize because it was the era of true vigilante justice and bad guys pulling off daring heists .
@Ruupasya, I've heard that humans tend to remember bad memories better. It's our brain's way of saying "Don't make that mistake again"
@Ruupasya, I would give you a wedgie if we met.
@A White Guy, uh... why?
@A White Guy, a wedgie?
@A White Guy, why not a swirly or a purple nurple?
@Gay Rattlesnake , I can't murder a bunch of black people and get community service nowadays :/ ♡50s♡
And one of those is absolutely delicious
@rambunctious elf, racism is delicious? Maybe if you are TRUMP 🇺🇸🇦🇺🇸🇦
@rambunctious elf, milkshakes aren't bad either.
@rambunctious elf, racism is delicious!
@Mortimer Smith Sr, I'm confused by the Saudi and Australian flags.
@CriTiKa1, all I used was the American one o.o
@rambunctious elf, i prefer diet racism my self
@rambunctious elf, *both
Morals and respect seemed to be more prevalent.
@Snarfel Burger, they were
Yeah there has always been ignorant people, and there will always be ignorant people. I noticed a huge spike in the racist outburts after the Ferguson riot. Still angers me a little because I watched the interview with the victims parents, and they said they wanted absolutely no violence, and what did hundreds of black people do? They went on a riot. You had people that were huge black community leaders coming out and saying "What the hell is wrong with you people? This is not how you gain respect!" The reason why I said black people and not just people is because go back and watch the video there was like one white guy. I was watching it live at like 2 am. You literally had people driving in from a different state just to participate in the riot to go looting. Like are you fvcking kidding me? So since then it seems like things took a step back. I'm just glad all my black friends were pissed off at the riot.
@Bonersaurus, it's a socioeconomic status problem, not a race problem. It's just that (unfortunately) black people are disproportionally likely to be in poverty, and people in poverty are more likely to do bad things out of ignorance or desperation.
@Ruupasya, yes I agree. I wasn't trying to say it was a racist thing, but at the same time when you have the majority of people that do that kind of thing be a particular race, ignorant people of other races will be more scared of the one race that does more bad stuff. That's why you have middle aged and older white ladies scared when they see a big strong black guy wearing a hoodie. Not that every middle aged and older white lady is like that, but just as an example we can all agree on.
@Bonersaurus, I agree.
@Bonersaurus, In addition to this the Southern Poverty Law Center released a report on an increase of both white and black racist groups in the past few years. Groups like the KKK and the New Black Panther Party have been a lot more active in recruiting and in organizing events.
@Bonersaurus, Ignorant (read: racist) people will find a reason regardless of what black people do.
Atleast people like Bernie Sanders wouldn't be running for president
@4Chan Ambassador , Stop making everything political.
@4Chan Ambassador , Nice.
@UmActually, courtesy of
@4Chan Ambassador , I also used to live in my mom's basement and think I was a political genius.
-Implying I claimed I was a political genius.
-Resorting to petty cliché insults.
[Cuck identified. Power Level: Millennial]
@4Chan Ambassador , You say I use cliche insults, but you keep calling me a cuck which is the typical 4chan insult.
@4Chan Ambassador , Are you a broken record?
@4Chan Ambassador , ...Because I don't want to discuss politics on a funny picture app?
@UmActually, No one forced you to reply to his comment. You could've very easily ignored him.
@CriTiKa1, He literally talks politics on every single pic.
@UmActually, He's looking for arguments, so if he doesn't get any arguments he'll eventually stop.
@CriTiKa1, That or I'll get arrogant. Bernie won't get the nomination anyway, so it'll all be over soon... This Tuesday. He'll probably get screwed by Hillary then
@4Chan Ambassador , That's worst case scenario. I'd much rather have Bernie nominated than Hillary. If Bernie gets nominated he has no chance in hell of beating whoever the republicans nominate. Hillary actually has a chance though.
But it's not like it was..
Silly girl, black people didn't exist then
@Plants for Hire, That's true, Lyndon B. Johnson invented black people or "African Americans" in 1965 as a tribute to JFK who always said that he thought things looked a little bland in America. Fun fact.
And homophobia :/
Cocain is illegal now
I mean ya theirs still racism, but it's largely the minority. Most people are terrified of being called racist. Though this has started to change aswell.
Polio and Chill
One word. . . ELVIS !!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah... WOOHOO!
