So using merriam-webster's definition, both the simple, and full definitions states that "gender" is eine either male or female. There we have it guys and gals, the debate is officially over. Lulz.
"Make America Great Again!"
@Dreamwings, return volleys fired.
Is this how sex works?
You can act however you want, but that doesn't change the fact that if you're born a guy, you stay a guy, and if you're born a chick, you stay a chick.
@CriTiKa1, hormone replacement treatment and an operation bubs.
@soupaboy, Still doesn't change the fact that you are what you're born as.
@soupaboy, oh yeah I'll go get a bunch of estrogen pumped into me and cut off my penis, that will really make me a woman!
@CriTiKa1, actually, you speak of gender as something you're born as. Gender is a social construct, and is different from culture to culture. Biological sex runs on a spectrum from male to female, with several intermediaries such as individuals with hermaphroditic genitalia or phenotypic females with XY chromosomes. Sexual variation is found naturally, society just construes it how they want.
@CriTiKa1, I think when people talk about "gender spectrums," they're referring to the range from masculinity to femininity that a person can act. Of course, no one I know acts strictly masculine or feminine all the time (except people who are obsessed with their "gender"), so that means just about everyone is supposedly "gender-fluid." People get the word "gender" confused with the word "personality" the way I see it.
@CriTiKa1, Gender is a psychological trait.
@UmActually, gender identity is a psychological trait
@CriTiKa1, the right surgeon can change that.
@CriTiKa1, thank you. Don't get me wrong, I think gender stereotypes are dumb and it's awful people have to feel out of place as their gender, but... You're either male or female. With RARE exception. In the end, I don't really care what you identify as. If you have a djck, you're male. If you have a vag, you're female. With very rare exceptions (I.e. Hermaphrodites)
@Gonitha, that is the best explanation/conclusion on the subject I have ever seen. Everyone else can shut up and go home now.
@CriTiKa1, there is a difference between the gender you were assigned to and the one you identify as, you can be born male but identify as female, or as female and identify male or you may not identify as either and are non-binary, this is completely natural and can cause severe psychological harm if you try to suppress it (hence why a large number of transgender/NB people suffer from depression,often self harm and take their own lives) regardless the only person who has a say in what gender someone had identified as is that person themselves.
@CriTiKa1, you're right. You were born a thumb sucking idiot and it seems like things don't change. *crowd roars* Nah seriously though who legit gives a damn? If they are happier calling themselves whatever so they feel good about waking up and being comfortable in their own body then who can say it's a bad thing.
Pretty soon tumblr 12 yr olds will be talking about "i sexually identify as a 21 year old, age is a spectrum" soon these tumblr kids will also identify as controversy since at this point it could only be through the satisfaction of sexual stimulation via causing controversy that could warrant kids' creation of new "genders"
@Vasmas09, slippery slope fallacy much?
Guys, the difference between sex (biological) and gender (cultural construct) is a basic lesson taught in many introductory college courses. This is one of the first topics touched on in sociology and anthropology courses. And it's not just the opinion of a single professor, researchers who dedicate their lives to studying other cultures back this up. Normally, cultures create a third gender because those people serve special functions within society and live highly different lives from the average citizen. Our culture doesn't do that, so some find it strange and ridiculous. And that's incredibly ethnocentric. I feel like this topic gets a bad rap because of tumblr and people who make up "genders," but the fact that there is an essential difference between sex and gender is backed by research and study of cultures across the world.
@Suzy Shallow Throat, I wouldn't say cultures "normally" create third genders. Does it happen? Sure. Is it something that the rest of the world is partaking in while the U.S. hides in fear? No.
@TwistedTea, You're right. That was poorly worded. I meant that in cultures that have third genders, it's normally for that reason.
@Suzy Shallow Throat, I'll give you that. There is an important distinction between gender and sex, but the scientific community is rather divided on how gender is defined, which honestly just adds to the confusion.
@Suzy Shallow Throat, shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ut the fuvk up :)
@Septibus, old picture reference is old 👍
@Suzy Shallow Throat, thank you for making such a well articulated comment :)
Why does anyone care what someone else wants to identify as? Why don't we agree to stop getting butthurt over what people wanna call their tallywhackers
@Paul Newman, because it's scientifically incorrect. In others words, stupid.
@Comic Sans, so's Christianity but people seem to be ok with that
@Paul Newman, religion has nothing to do with people thinking biological gender is somehow a fluid thing.
@Pubmarine Shamwich, it's about not caring what people wanna believe and who they wanna be. If I can smile and nod when someone's talking about their 3000 year old story book you should be able to the same with people being who they wanna be. If it makes someone happy and doesn't hurt anyone who are we to judge.
Ok I'm a plant. (Asexual) and I take no offence because I don't get involved with this stuff but I feel like I am obligated to comment so...hey
Excuse me, waiter? There seems to be some controversial topic in my funny pics.
@Christa9584, it's part of our new controversy special. Free controversy with every meal.
@DustMonkey, don't these come with eminems?
@umeni, no just one. He'll be here shortly.
@DustMonkey, *faint drum beats in the distance*
@Christa9584, not controversial. Just human physiology
@I Poop Often , Which has been a controversial topic lately with all the Transgender "issues" in the news.
Scientifically speaking, there is proof of gender fluidity, in that a person's internal (not physical) gender is on a form of spectrum. No you can't switch between genders on a dime like a transformer and no wolf is not a gender but the science does exist to prove basic gender fluidity. Look it up
There are 3 genders! Male, female and vegans
It makes me happy to know that this community is on my side in this retarded argument
There are two sexes, there are multiple genders.
@FunnyFamous, there's really not
@Flying Oranges , gender and sex are two different things. Do some reasearch
@FunnyFamous, YASS my bubs
Gender is a spectrum and I'm sorry yall are so damn repressed that you can't let go of your imaginary, overly simplistic binary.
@KeKesUHaulFacility , THAT'S PERFECT!
@KeKesUHaulFacility , I hope you're kidding cause that's retarded
@benderama, You really think everyone on the whole damn planet fits into one of two neat little boxes with no variations? Cause I'm gonna go ahead and tell you right now that that's a ridiculous expectation
@KeKesUHaulFacility , I don't want to live on this planet anymore
@KeKesUHaulFacility , people can be different, but everyone has either XX chromosomes or XY chromosomes being a woman or a man. That's reality.
@Vesrox, Yes, you are born one of two sexes, but your sex is complete separate from your gender.
@Vesrox, and everyone has a different brain chemistry and upbringing that dictates how they express their gender be it man, woman, nonbinary, agender, etc.
@KeKesUHaulFacility , key word there is 'express' their gender. There are two genders, you can express yourself however you please but that doesn't change your gender
@FunnyFamous, did a quick Google search. Found that gender identity is described as ones personal feeling of being a man or a woman. But if you're a woman and you just feel like a man, that doesn't make you a man.
@ajr12100, Your sex, gender identity, gender expression, and sexuality are all different
@ajr12100, there's more than two genders
@Vesrox, If you think someone is a woman and then they tell you that they're a man then you were wrong, no matter what, that's it, point blank and simple.
@KeKesUHaulFacility , that's not true at all. If someone tells me they're a dragon does that mean they're a dragon?
@KeKesUHaulFacility , if a black guy tells me he's Asian that doesn't make him Asian
@Vesrox, actually that's not entirely true because biology isn't always perfect. Some people can be born with xxy, and some people with xy actual develop as a female, vagina and all (just not fertile). Depending on hormone levels and sensitivity different things can happen at different stages that cause psychological development defined as belonging to one gender or the other. There are genetic reasons for transgenderism, however I do agree gender fluid and a lot of stuff you hear about seems stupid
@Vesrox, why do yall always do this? These are not equivalent comparisons in any way, shape, or form. We're talking about the gender spectrum and you want to bring up the most unrelated examples you can think of. Do you not have like an actual good argument or something?
@KeKesUHaulFacility , but if that someone has a vag!na and two 'x' chromosomes then they are a woman regardless of what they want
@ajr12100, it's not something you decide, you can decide to be whatever sexuality you want; you can't decide your biological gender
@KeKesUHaulFacility , they're pretty good comparisons. Saying that you are something that you're physically not.
@jouze, biologically speaking, it's your chromosomes that determine what sex and gender you are. Although, yeah there are conditions that make you develop as the other gender, but it's not common enough that there should be this many people saying they're the other sex.
@Vesrox, no biologically speaking it's a mix of chromosomes and hormones. And you'd be surprised sex hormone sensitivity and level differences are a lot more common than you think. And no two people has the exact same slew of chemicals affecting their bodies. Also current gender stereotypes influence how people associate with one gender or the other because of certain ways they may act or feel due to these hormones so they feel like they belong more to another group that society may not pin them as. It may not be as common as we're seeing it but it is actually pretty common
@KeKesUHaulFacility , well you see most of the time things are as simplistic as they seem
@KeKesUHaulFacility , if someone is a woman and says that they are a man, I'll say, that's great that you like deluding yourself and I won't be a dick about but don't ask me to call you man,him,his,he when you have tits and a vag because that's just fvcking stupid and I won't do it
@jouze, you're talking about mutations that account for less than 1% of society and we shouldn't make up bullshjt for outliers
@BigfootUnibrowMan, genetic differences, stochastic differences during devrlopment, and epigenetic factors can all influence it, and realistically account for 4-6% of people. In America alone that is anywhere around 12 million people. And it's not just "making up bs identifiers" the only people who worry about that are the people who don't know the real problem and care too much about ridiculous things. It's access to rights and proper medical treatment, so you're saying that 12 million have no say in their rights
@jouze, I don't think he even brought up rights in his argument, and the discussion on a whole is not about rights, it's about whether or not there are more than two genders. Rights and access to proper medical things is kind of a common sense no brainer. Of course they should have it, as well as every other human on the planet. Gender is a bit more of a complex topic. The issue lies less with how people identify themselves as, or what they "feel" to be, and more how it is actually defined, or more so, who is defining it.
@ajr12100, you can't decide either, you can't decide to be transgender, it just happens
@Vesrox, And I'm not the physical manifestation of disappointment but here I am, disappointed in all of you
@BigfootUnibrowMan, that's like the exact definition of being a dick about it
@KeKesUHaulFacility , that's simply not true. In a few cases there are genetic abnormalities that make people be transgender, however at my school I know three students who say they are transgender simply because they want to be
@ajr12100, and how are you so sure of that?
@KeKesUHaulFacility , because I've seen two of them naked and am close friends with all three
@KeKesUHaulFacility , and they have told me that they chose to be trans, they weren't born with any differences
@ajr12100, two if not three would agree that there are two genders and you are born with the gender you are. They consider trans to be a sexuality.
@KeKesUHaulFacility , expression=gender 2016
@KeKesUHaulFacility , Are you so dissapointed in everyone because of their thoughts, opinions, and convincing arguments?
Fvck this where is my funny?
If there's more genders out there than i need to grab my pokedex and catch them all!
...because the concept of gender (rather than sex) is an artificial creation of society to try and artificially force people into certain roles based on sex and therefore trying to create new genders is silly because it only serves to further legitimize a system that was broken from the start and *originally* used to force women into the housewife role and create stereotypes based on sex (not only against women: male stereotypes are just as present from the concept of gender. Don't believe me? Think of a boy playing with barbie dolls.)
@Ruvmu, I appreciate your logic but that's just simply not true. There are three things at play here, sex (let's go with chromosomes), gender identity (how you feel), and gender roles/expression (playing with boys toys, wearing boys clothes, etc.).
Your claim, if I understand correctly, is that embracing more genders strengthens the concept of gender roles, and I can see your point. However, it doesn't explain how gender roles are blurring (women can wear pants, men can be stay at home dads), and it doesn't explain people like me, for instance, a trans guy who likes nail polish and is an elementary teacher (traditionally a woman's job).
Do you want tumblrists. Cause that's how you get tumblrists.
So many of the comments are downvoted into oblivion, the tumblr users have already been here *hides from downvote barrage, doesn't work*
Lol I'm not even going to get into this
I see potential for this to be a meme
What if you have both sets of genitals?
@The Token Black Guy, yeah that's called a hermaphrodite. It occurs naturally in a lot of species and is the primary reason this post is retarded.
@Paul Newman, a hermaphrodite is so rare it does not constitute a new gender, also they will still fit mostly under male or female it terms of their growth
@The Token Black Guy, It's a genetic mutation and is just a separate condition. You can "identify" with the one with which you express more traits
@The Token Black Guy, people who have both sets of genitals or have various chromosomal conditions are called intersex. Hermaphrodite is the outdated and offensive word for it. Any person, male, female, or intersex, can identify as a man, a woman, neither (agender), or some form of both (non-binary).
