Don't forget that there's a difference between being offensive and being an asshole thoufh
@SaladSnake, I don't see the distinction...
@I Are Lebo, It comes from whether the offensive thing a thoughtful but challenging insight or an ignorant comment from your own lack of thought.
@JJJSchmidt, that's a difference of motive, not context. An asshole comment is any comment where the possibility of causing offends is overlooked or ignored. I do those all the time. Whereas an offensive comment is one of two things. Either A: it's a comment intentionally made to hurt, or B: anything that someone chooses to be offended by.
The second definition covers pretty much anything said, ever.
@SaladSnake, I'm always an asshole thoufh
@I Are Lebo,
I fail to see the distinction. There is no way to tell what comments will be offensive or not, regardless of whether we are aware of what we are saying could be offensive. Anything any person says could potentially be offensive to anyone. It would seem to me that there isnt a difference, except for situations where the individual is not offended, but can observe someone else being offended. For the person offended, the comment is offensive, and therefore an asshole comment, whereas to the one not offended it can still be an offensive comment(theyve observed it offending someone), just not to themselves, therefore making the comedians comment offensive but not assholish.
I doubt any of what i just wrote was clear...
@averagestuckpixluser, somewhat sorta.
I was just saying that unless someone is deliberately trying to offend someone, the question "is it offensive?" is a pointless one. Anyone can be offended by anything.
But the big thing that a LOT of people do not understand is that 'offensive' is NOT a synonym for 'bad'.
@I Are Lebo,
I agree, bad and offensive all depend on the observer.
@averagestuckpixluser, I disagree. Being offended runs the whole gamut from useful to useless. Rosa Parks was offended by the fact that she had to sit at the back of the bus, so she did something about it. On the other side, people on the internet get offended by other people having opinions, and that accomplishes nothing.
A proper definition of bad is not based on the perspective. 'Bad' is when something affects someone directly in a negative manner. The fact that people unaffected by it are ignoring it doesn't make it not bad. People can benefit from something bad, but it does not make it good. Someone getting rich by exploiting someone else has done something bad, even if it turned out to be beneficial to them.
Do you get what I mean?
Having said that, at the end of the day, whether an act was inherently good or bad doesn't really matter. Morality is an invention of human sociology.
@I Are Lebo,
Im not entirely sure what you are getting at here. My comment above was just about being offensive vs an asshole. It would seem to me that most people who are offended would consider the person who offended them to be an asshole. This only changes when some observer knows that a comment is offensive but that they dont think somoene should be offended. Take a joke about gay sex. A person might be aware that this could offend someone who is ultra religious, but they dont think it is immoral like the religous person does, so even though the comment was offensive they dont think it was assholish.
If we get into what is good and bad we will be here forever. Either things are good or bad based on subjective opinions of individuals(moral relativism) , God gives us our morals, or as some have suggested, we can scienfically determine a morality based on human wellbeing, i.e., it is bad to stab your eye out because you are less effective at surviving, etc.
@I Are Lebo,
When I said bad or offensive depending on the observer, it may have been better if I had said the individual.
@averagestuckpixluser, fair enough.
Although that kind of was my point with my original comment.
@I Are Lebo, allow me to just clear this up with examples.
"homosexuals are gross and should never be eliminated." a*s hole
"homosexuality is unappealing." offensove.
basically the unpopular opinion these days is offensive bit an a*s hole thing to say generally has some form of aggression to it.
@Caine, lol nvm i apparently can't English this morning. have fun kids. :)
@Caine, also not trying to harp on people who prefer same gender. was just the first topic that came to mind
@Caine, that may have been a bad pair of examples. In my opinion the first one there is ignorance more than it is offensive or asshole-y. The second one is a personal opinion.
I mean, to someone who is a 1 on the Kinsey scale, homosexuality can be generally unappealing to them.
How about "no honey, those pants don't make you fat, your fat ass does." That isn't an offensive remark, but it is an asshole one.
And "it's not that I hate gay people, they just shouldn't be allowed to get married. They don't deserve the same rights as normal people." is an offensive remark, even if the person saying so doesn't think they're being an asshole.
Does that mean feminists don't think?
@Sexy Homunculus, ☝😦
@Sexy Homunculus, triggered
@Sexy Homunculus, doesn't that mean the opposite?
@Kakashi Hitake, if it actually caused a discussion you would be right. But feminists typically aren't interested in a discussion, they want to silence any opposing viewpoints.
@Sexy Homunculus, yeah it's sad how many feminazis drown out real rational women and others looking to improve society, by just ranting and arguing without thinking
@Sexy Homunculus, STAHP MANSPLAINING GAWSH IM FEELING SO ATTACKED RITE NOW
@Sexy Homunculus, any downvotes you get instantly lets me know how man feminists there are
I've made a lot of people think. More to come in the next few months.
@Donald Trump, ooooo do tell...
@RhettandLink, wait til I debate that lyin' Hillary
@Donald Trump, *can't waiting*
"Your cancer-suffering mum is a whore" hmmm I'm thinking. Thanks man!
Louis C.K. is my favorite comedian ever.
If only people did start thinking when they got offended.
So if you guys stop attacking people's identities for cheap laughs will you die? Like I'm actually wondering will your hearts stop beating?
@KeKesUHaulFacility , yes
@KeKesUHaulFacility , so if you stop telling everyone you think you're a dragon, you'll die? I assume you're an otherkin, right?
thinking isn't always a good thing though...
@Exotic Xer, you remind me of the white girl the new season of OITNB who wasn't sure if she could read because she never tried.
Which is why people get mad. People don't wanna think....unless money is involved.
Not true, people can be both offended and complete fvcking idiots
Clearly you have never heard of buzzfeed
Trump is a thieving pig who wants more money.
But they don't think. That part shuts off and the angry starts up.
False feminists are always offended and they never think
i don't know who that guy is or why he's related to this post.
Wow, Andrew Dice Clay is smart.
Like I said, people that always get offended by things super easily even though it wasn't meant to offend them are pussies.
@The Tower Of Pimps, why not dicks?
@The Tower Of Pimps, They're pusillanimous? Nah, they're dicks.
Offensive bearded funny guy
