As a Native...yeah I'm over it. Just don't hurt my trees.
@Comic Sans, I'm half, it was bad but was centuries ago. Not like it's still happening or the us will give the tribes all those states back. It's done. No one alive has been involved
@Dephenistrator, you really think we would give all those states back? Lmao
@Sim0nSays , no, that's the point
@Dephenistrator, my bad i misread your comment thinking it said they would give the states back
@Dephenistrator, it still is tho, that's what the big deal is going on in Washington state right now, they're restricting Native American fishing and river usage rights and running a pipeline through it
@InsanityWolf404, by it I mean the land that was "given" back to them
@Comic Sans, you mean... like this, "Hey tree! You're rough to the touch and most people don't like to touch you because you're sticky and have a lot of bugs on you! Ya better get some water for that burn"
@Comic Sans, not your trees anymore chief...
Says Columbus was a terrible person and imperialist
Still takes day off for Columbus Day
@Sexy Homunculus, I care more about the day off than the horrible implications of what it represents
@Sexy Homunculus, I never take Columbus Day off
@Sexy Homunculus, I'll take any specifically named day as a day off when I can.
Hell, I'd take Sexy Homunculus Day off if I could.
@benderama, I never get Columbus Day off...
@Phil Tippet, but...they're not horrible. It's the discovery of a new land for his people. And yes the Indians ended up on the short end when all was said and done. But still, the expansion of humanity has always been at the cost of those less willing to adapt. And also, we act like the natives were peaceful and kind. They weren't. Plain and simple.
@HammerOfHerertics, except... the natives weren't actually bad. Columbus described the natives he came across as being /very/ kind people, right before he exploited their labor trying to get gold that wasn't there.
@John Lennon, you're conflating like three different people/timelines. But either way I meant in general throughout the history of interactions between Europe and the Natives and even before the Europeans.
@HammerOfHerertics, and the way the natives interacted with each other matters? Europe was really no different, for the longest time it was constant war between different nations, especially in the area of modern day Germany.
@John Lennon, exactly my point. People shouldn't feel bad for the natives any more than they feel bad for the people during the conquests of Europe.
@Sexy Homunculus, if your office is closed for the day... what are you supposed to do?
@HammerOfHerertics, I wouldn't be that kind to you either if you raped and murder my family
@Sexy Homunculus, do you say the same about the non-Christians who gladly accept Christmas Day as a holiday? I didn't think so
@Sexy Homunculus, no because natives were just as greedy as we were we were just better equipped with not only weapons but also diseases there are no good or bad guys in history remember Morality is Relative
@eleven, yeah nazis are my favorite
@Unkle77, no because they don't bash Jesus, Mary or the Wise Men
*raving historian babble about how the vikings discovered north America first and how Christopher Columbus landed on the Bahamas, not the American mainland.*
@RichardTheLionheart , Vikings: "FIRST!"
@RichardTheLionheart , well said, sir or madam
*it would be a shame
OK I'm gonna take a lot of heat for this but oh well here goes: the Vikings came here first and the Native Americans did not have borders, and a state needs to be recognized by other states to be a state. Correct me if I'm wrong I'm not trying to be a know-it-all ass
@Honest Politician, I think the issue is less about invading the country and more about genocide.
@HolyCatchphrase, that makes sense
The "discovery" of America was and is not the most interesting action(s) and motive(s) I've learned with Columbus Day; it was the deal Columbus made with his crew to the first person to spot land and the winning to said person that keeps my attention. Mainly, because I loathe people that always "win" every competition conveniently.
Columbus was a horrible person
@benderama, lol typical modern day answer
@HammerOfHerertics, Yes. Most people in the modern day do believe he was barbaric. "typical modern day answer" What year were you born in? 1492?
Theyve only just recently discovered iraq and syria
Columbus did not discover America! He never even left the Caribbean
No body discovered America, the Native American people evolved here from the start, they have always been here, their DNA line cannot be found anywhere else in the world, this land belongs to them and I am ashamed to be a descendant of those horrible European genocidal maniacs
@benderama, Nope. Land bridge. Try again
