@Naga Sadow, no you have it right that's why we call it a lunar eclipse but the world has so many languages that we all ended up essentially just calling it the massive night rock. But for all intents and purposes it's name is Luna. Also on the note of "well it has other names in other languages" English is the most common language on the planet so I think that is gets first say as to the name of various things. Sorry for the long post but the moon's name is Luna. End of story

@Mkb617, "The Moon" is a TITLE pertaining to relevant people who in this case is the entire population of earth. Similar to saying "my house" which pertains to all who live in said house. HOWEVER "my house" is not the name of your house; the address is the actual name of your house. For example 221B Baker St is Sherlock Holmes' flat, he would refer to it as "my flat" however the name of the place is still 221B Baker St regardless of the title. Please note that by using this logic the Milky Way Galaxy would also be referred to as The Galaxy but most people simply call it by its name. Another example of this phenomenon is in the Harry Potter book series where the home of the Weaselys is referred to as the burrow(it's name) as opposed to the title of Ron's House

@Lord Wivern, seriously look it up. The moon was originally thought to be the only one so it was known as the moon. When the moons of Jupiter were discovered they started getting names. If there was only one book or one house in the world they would not need a name they would simply be the book or the house. Seriously 10 seconds on any search engine. The official name according to the International Astronomical association and in pretty much any scientific paper is simple The Moon
-
@Lord Wivern, actually, not all houses have names. It is popular in England, Ireland, etc. (All of Europe?) but, here in America, our houses don't normally have names. The address is just the location. So, our relatives home in Ireland is "The Little Briary", but my last home here was just an apartment in SLO.

@Robin the Tactician, that is actually not true. I am not sure about Terra but the moon is simply named The Moon and this is according to international astronomical union. Luna is just a name made up, mostly in science fiction, or by writers. Pretty much any scholarly journals or writings also call it The Moon
-
For everyone saying that the moon is named Luna. Luna is that Latin word for Moon. Selene is the Greek word. It is where we get the word selenology. The official name for the moon is actually The Moon. This is from the International Astronomical Union. A little history, until moons were discovered around Jupiter, many people thought that our moon was the only one. It was only after other moons were discovered that they were given names to distinguish them from ours

@Mr Literal, I am not the one that makes the rules. According to the International Astronomical Union and pretty much any scientific paper written about it It is called the Moon. And just because Juan and John Are different version of the same name it doesn't mean John Johnsons name is changed to Juan Johnson. You wouldn't correct someone but it doesn't change their actual name

@Spanish Inquisition, a little backwards there. All natural satellites are not called moon because of the popularity of ours. Moon is a name for natural satellites. Ours is The Moon because for a long time it was believed to be the only one. When the moons of Jupiter were first known they were given different names to distinguish them from ours
Luna.
