18YO: Can I drink a beer?
GOVT: No, that's illegal and super dangerous!
18YO: Can I join the military?
GOVT: Hellz yeah! Here's an M4, specialized training, and your first deployment order.
@SCBeauty1983, 18YO: Can i drink a beer?
GOVT: Of course you can this is England
@TheBigJ, can I buy a gun?
@SCBeauty1983, see my comment to @FP Waiter
@Michael Fassbender, Yes, if you're 21 or older (Federal law)
*Yes, I'm also aware that some states allow some provisions for younger gun purchases, most notably for hunting purposes.
@Michael Fassbender, ^disregard please. I didn't realize that wasn't a question for me.
@SCBeauty1983, except for rifles/long guns. Those are 18
@SCBeauty1983, I belive that in most states 21 is the age for purchasing handguns. At 18 you can buy long guns (rifles & shotguns).
The more you know!
@Kliment Voroshilov, can confirm that's correct. 21 for handguns or PGOs over the counter (can still legally be purchased private party at 18 in some states but not carried) and 18 for rifles and the ATFs definition of a shotgun
@Kliment Voroshilov, Yep, I bought an SKS last year when I was 19.
@CriTiKa1, Being the mad man that I am I bought a Swedish Mauser, a Mossin - nagant and an AR-15 within a few months of turning 18.
@TheBigJ, no this is Sparta!
@SCBeauty1983, You can drink and purchase smokes on base when you join the military and are under drinking age.
@HeroOfFunnypics, if you're deployed in a separate country or are over seas
@Fun Facts 101, nah if its a special occasion like birthday or coming home party they allow it. At least for the marines
@HeroOfFunnypics, that only depends on case by case bases as not all marines or any military gets to drink at all it just depends on the commanding officer because it is still illegal on base
@SCBeauty1983, I'm pretty sure you can buy a gun at 18 just not a handgun until you're 21.
@Michael Fassbender, sure if you have a license
@LeafOnTheW1nd, yeah so your gov't knows everyone with a gun. You'll be the first to be raided if the government decided to take over.
I don't think that 18/yo soldiers shouldn't be allowed to drink, but I do think the vast majority of 18/yo shouldn't be allowed to drink. It scares me they're allowed to vote.
@FP Waiter, I think 18 year old should be allowed to drink, when these kids get around alcohol for the first time and also have no adult supervision they don't know how to drink responsibly.
@FP Waiter, well there's that three year gap where they can vote but not drink legally. Like legality would stop most. Hell if a parent says it's ok and they're at home it's not illegal
@Cloverleaf, only illegal if you get caught
@FP Waiter, actually on base you can drink if your under 21
@FP Waiter, the drinking law is partly because the liver is still developing until about age 21. but the brain is still developing until age 25, so agreeing to risk your life by joining the military should be 21+ with special provisions for younger persons.
@HashSliningSlasher, what base are you stationed on? Every base I've been on its a minimum article 15 for underage drinking
@the pil0t, that what's I was told by my ex_marine father growing up, maybe things have changed
@Michael Fassbender, you can thank Regan for that. States get federal money for roads if they have their drinking age increased to 21
@Cloverleaf, that's actually a myth. Parents can be arrested for allowing a minor to drink, especially if they provide the alcohol.
@makaylamisty, well what I meant was specifically a parent allowing their own kid in their own home.
@Cloverleaf, still can be charged with giving alcohol to a minor, parent or not. It's a myth. Granted, it's a harder one to enforce, but it's illegal all the same.
@makaylamisty, my parents did let me but only on special occasions, and only one drink, and only after I turned 17. I can see what you're saying...hah, now I'm 27 and my dad wants to see me get drunk. Those time they let me taught me to respect alcohol and what it can do to you, so he's never gonna see it
@Cloverleaf, I mean, my parents did the same but it still doesn't mean that it's legal. Plus, not to call you old or anything but the law may have only recently changed within the last ten years.
@HashSliningSlasher, oh thats old school military where no one really cared what you did as long as you didn't die and were where you were supposed to be when you were supposed to be there
@makaylamisty, it depends on the state laws, actually. In Wi, it's 100% legal to drink underage if you have the permission of a parent, guardian, or spouse over the age of 21. (But it's also legal to serve alcohol to pregnant or breast feeding women here, so I think Wi's drinking laws are pretty lax compared to most)
I mean, it's not like as soon as your take out student debt you're f*cked for your whole life. My dad had to take out student loans and work through college. Instead of complaining that the government should forgive his student loans, he paid off all his debt and went on to start his own business. Yeah, it sucks to have debt, but with a practical career that pays well makes it pay off.
@King Millner, your dad is what we call a normal hard working American. The people who complain are the ones that pay out of state tuition to go to UCLA and study gender studies because it's their "passion"
@Michael Fassbender, to be fair also though, tuition rates are increasing well above the rate of inflation. Working one part time job isn't enough, you need like 3 part time jobs.
@King Millner, except the average tuition cost has more than tripled since the early 80s which is when I guess he went based on the fact that you are 17 or older yet not in college and using your own success working at McDonalds in the summer as your example. So most kids who's parents can't pay have to go into debt
@King Millner, Ok great story, but literally everything is different now.
Don't major in gender studies or art. Problem solved!
@AnonymousCrab, or history.
@Michael Fassbender, or english
@AnonymousCrab, or psychology
@AnonymousCrab, or philosophy
@AnonymousCrab, and ESPECIALLY not nuclear engineering
@Michael Fassbender, careers are for money, hobbies are for what you love
@AnonymousCrab, if you're a pornstar what's the difference?
@Michael Fassbender, haha I actually got my degree in history. I was originally planning on becoming a teacher or doing federal work (I even interviewed with FBI personnel and was extended an offer although I ultimately declined it) but I ended up taking a job at a mutual funds company. It's worked out pretty well, and my boss is a hot Latina
@Sexy Homunculus, you gonna fück her?
@Michael Fassbender, maybe at the company Christmas party. Just gotta work on my Sexy Santa outfit first
@Sexy Homunculus, jingle my bells sweater. You're welcome.
@Sexy Homunculus, if you get this sweater it is practically like I put your dick in her mouth
@Michael Fassbender, as long as I don't get fired that sounds awesome
@Sexy Homunculus, you'll be fine my friend wore one to our Christmas party. His bells were jingled, and there was some ✌🏼️snow✌🏼 in Louisiana
And you can fight in a war but not own a handgun at home til your 21
@Your Darkest Secret, well only officers are issued handguns
@Michael Fassbender, I need a handgun
@Your Darkest Secret, black market
@Michael Fassbender, but I can shop at the white market?
@Your Darkest Secret, don't let the minorities know about that. They might try to enter and take some of our white privilege. Do you want to have your yacht taken away?!
@Michael Fassbender, heavens no!!... *secretly cries because I'm not even middle class American**
@Your Darkest Secret, well go to the white privilege market and pick up a yacht. They give them out for free, you just have to pass a paint swatch test
@Michael Fassbender, thanks! I'll surely do that after golf.
18YO: can I drink booze? GOVT: nah that's dangerous n illegal 18YO: how about die for my country and have a voting say in the political climate of this country? GOVT: we got u fam
"Unmarketable" meaning certain bachelor of arts degrees. BA's like some business ones and criminal justice (which I'm not 100% sure is a ba but I think it is) and bachelor of Science degrees will get you a job pretty easily in most cases.
@Thatbright, the issue is some degrees are marketable but the pay for those jobs is low. for example, i'll be a teacher next year (prob in a public school) with a Master's and i'll be making somewhere between 25-35k a year for a while (and i'm in a high-paying area), but i'm 60k in debt even with major scholarships and assistantships and whatnot. fortunately i think there is some degree of debt forgiveness if you use your degree to work for the government for a certain period of time. this is a ramble, i donNt remember my point but i'm going to post this snyway
@Ruupasya, I get what you mean. Although even though teacher pay is low at least you'll have job security, so it might take a while but you'll be able to pay off your debt. At least I hope lol
Your brain isn't done developing until you're in your early 20's. Alcohol can mess with that development. People are getting more and more idiotic as the days go by, lets not add more tards with lowering the drinking age.
Wu Tang financial: You got to diversify yo bonds nyukka.
I heard you can get alcohol under 21 at school if you go to west point or navy or other military schools. Not sure if it's true
@Danknss, or if you live in Louisiana and are with a parent you can drink at any age. NAPOLEON FUCΚ YEAH!
@Michael Fassbender, that's true in any state
@KingHamletsGhost, not in public though
@KingHamletsGhost, there's drive thru daiquiri shops here ffs
Cause Americans can't handle their alcohol. End up killing people accidentally all the time. Should really be 30+ there
@Click to toggle, What country is it that you're from?
So the government decides your major now...? Maybe you should of majored in Gender Studies or Liberal Arts f@ggot
ALBERTA IS 18 AYYYYY
It's your own dumbass fault to pick an unmarketable degree
If the degree is unmarketable, that's on you, not the government. Plus, you shouldn't need government permission for that kind of thing, so I'm not sure why you're asking in the first place.
Neither are good for you
15YO: can I drive?
PA: no that's illegal
15YO: but South Dakota let's 14 year olds drive
PA: fvck off and wait for your permit
Well then don't get an unmarketable degree. Get something you can rely on, something worth while, like gender studies.
You can literally join the army to kill people at 18 and not be able to drink until you 21. Welcome to America son
Fun fact: now is the best time to have impending crippling debt because if the minimum wage goes up and inflation sets in you won't owe as much 🌈⭐️
@Atticus O Sullivan , minimum wage won't go up
@Michael Fassbender, but it already has started. At least where I am in liberal state CA, it is on a hike to $15 per hour.
@Atticus O Sullivan , republicans have control of everything
@Michael Fassbender, doesn't mean that in states that are blue with massive populations (CA & NY namely) won't pass it on their own terms as a state bill. They have enough population to start an inflation
@Atticus O Sullivan , State's might increase minimum wage, but the federal minimum wage won't go up.
@Atticus O Sullivan , blue states just have blue cities with populations larger than their rural populations. Also if just a few states increase it won't have any major effect on inflation
@Atticus O Sullivan , also blue states suck
@Michael Fassbender, I agree with both of you, but they do pose a significant risk of inflating (at the very least) their own economies. Imagine if LA and NYC economies inflate. They are centers of commerce and the rest of the nation will feel it.
@Atticus O Sullivan , This is of course ignoring the fact that inflation is a bad thing overall and raising the min wage won't be a positive.
@Atticus O Sullivan , NY and LA are losing that because people no longer need to go to the cities for work. Almost every office job that involves a computer could be done sitting on the toilet in rural Montana.
@Michael Fassbender, that's a bit of a stretch I'd say. On top of that, it's not the office jobs that will affect us as much as the entry level unskilled jobs.
@Kliment Voroshilov, I'm just trying to find a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day
@Atticus O Sullivan , blue states suck, fact
@Michael Fassbender, that's an accurate and fair statement. I don't like a lot of the ideas that they are passing, but I can't do anything to stop it, so I might as well stop and smell the cancerous roses along the way.
@Atticus O Sullivan , take up arms and kill democrats
@Michael Fassbender, said like a true red blood
@Atticus O Sullivan , the reason we have the right to have firearms is because words can only do so much against a government. Get them to write a new legislation and watch it take 2 years to get passed. Walk into the governors mansion with an Armalite Rifle and I think they'll start listening a little bit closer
@Michael Fassbender, that is one way to make a change... probably banning guns, but that's a change, right?
@Atticus O Sullivan , yeah, let them try to ban guns
@Atticus O Sullivan , I think you just missed the point of what I said.
Inflation is in no way good!
Raising the min wage will cause inflation which as established above is bad!
@Kliment Voroshilov, what I'm saying is that if you have a viable, necessary job path, inflation will not affect you. I'm headed into surgical medicine, which required me to take out loans. If inflation goes up, my job will still be there, but my loans will feel like less. Sure most people will be SOL, but there is a small rainbow in the distance for some of us.
