At the time, Alexandria was a major trading port in the Mediterranean, and every book that passed through was painstakingly copied and stored in the library. The kings of the Ptolemaic dynasty also funded expeditions to book fairs (yes, those nerd-fests existed even back then) across the known world to bring back knowledge to the library. Its destruction is arguably one of the greatest tragedies of antiquity
I remember learning in high school that an ancient library was completely destroyed. If the knowledge preserved there had been available to us we may be 200 years ahead of where we are now technologically speaking. Perhaps machine guns and upgrades existed before I did your mom.
