Football was a catch all name for ball sports that were played on foot when those sports were developing, as opposed to horseback sports the nobility would play. So many different sports kept the football name

A football game starts with a kickoff. You can punt. I love soccer but I have an affinity for football players being concussed after tackling the hell out of each other without trying to outrun the referee to prevent receiving a yellow/red card.

Soccer is derived from Association Football, and used the Soc in association and simply added "er" to it, thus Soccer was created.
