Lucid dreaming is a really cool thing, but it has a very serious side-effect that you will experience at some point: sleep paralysis. You see, your brain naturally paralyzes your body during a dream in order to keep your motor skills suppressed during sleep (for obvious reasons). An unfortunate side effect to lucid dreaming is that you may awaken prematurely, before the brain has the chance to reconnect your motor functions; i.e. you will still be paralyzed whilst awake! That's not the worst part, either. Sleep paralysis almost always is accompanied by hallucinations, almost always BAD ones. These are terrifying because you know you're awake, and yet you see and hear things and are unable to move. This, by old folklore, is called "Old Hag". These terrifying episodes can last several minutes until your brain finally reassigns all awake functions. If you want more info, google sleep paralysis. So, my friends, here's my advice to you. Lucid dream all you want, but be prepared. Sorry for the long post.
@Sad Capitalist, and that is why I wont't try this. Actually happened to a friend once.
@Sad Capitalist, I'm scared to try now :(
@Sad Capitalist, I have a friend who has lucid dreamt every day of her life since she was about 5 or 6. She has never spoken to me of this sleep paralysis.
@Sad Capitalist, does the paralysis last forever or just for a certain amount of time?
@Sad Capitalist, I had this happened to me once. I was battling the evil king of the universe when I suddenly awoke. I has to pee but I couldn't move anything, not even my neck. I was stiff as a board and shutting bricks. And all of a sudden the evil king guy launched a plasma ball at me and my whole body like jerked to avoid it. So yea, basically I was there laying in bed doing random movements trying not to be killed by the evil king. Scariest night ever. Lasted about 10 minutes. Sorry for the long reply post.
@Sad Capitalist, i got sleep paralysis once( not because of lucid dreaming) all you need to do is go back to sleep and you'll be fine.
@Sad Capitalist, as long as it isn't permanent I'm still gonna try it
@Sad Capitalist, Sleep paralysis is the goal of lucid dreaming. All you have to do to get out of it is breathe deeply and slowly and it will wake you up.
@Sad Capitalist, OMFG NOW I DON'T WANT TO TRY THIS! Thank you, I think you have saved us from many horrors.
@Sad Capitalist, This is sort of true and false, sleep paralysis does not come with terrifying visions ever, it's when people are scared of it that the brain makes these hallucinations, if you're not scared and know what is happening, this won't happen.
@THE FRIENDZONE, same here u was excited until I read his comment
@Sad Capitalist, sometimes I have lucid dreams without trying but before I ever noticed I was having them I used to get sleep paralysis. Scariest part of sleep, I looked into and you are correct about your body shutting down but fully. I have horrible thoughts when I'm under, mainly that I'm being held down by ghosts and I struggle so much to wake up and I try so hard to open my eyes or roll off the bed/couch. I hear weird noises when I'm under and the lights seems to flicker, scares me just to think about it. I'm 24 and it still happens to me about once every few month but when it happens it keeps happening every time I try to go back to sleep, I have to get up and do something for an hour or so just to "reset" my self so I can finally go to sleep
@Sad Capitalist, I never lucid dream, but sleep paralysis happens to me at least once a week. It was really scary at first, but then I realized I could just close my eyes and wait for the demons to go away
@Waterwolf123, You're probably still waiting for a response. I hope you have Funny Pics Notifications. The paralysis only lasts about 3 minutes.
@Irish Stu, I know that now. After it happened to me. Scariest sh!t of my life
@Waterwolf1234, Was it worth the lucid dream?
@Irish Stu, sí señior
@Sad Capitalist, interesting thing for me is that I've gotten sleep paralysis before, but no terrifying visions. I guess it's because I was aware of it... Maybe
@Canadas bad side, have you tried to control the hallucinations? They are still dreams I think since they're controlled by the brain during sleep.
@Sad Capitalist, thanks, you just saved my life dude
I'm so gonna try this
The light switch not working... The absolute WORST part of a nightmare.
@7H3 64M3, I LOST!
One does not simply have a lucid dream..
@Snowboarding, you got so many more upvotes than anyone else yet you are not to comment?
@Zestastic, i feel like some admin assigns who they think shpuld be top comment becuase this happens alot
@The Vanguard, every downvote means that the likes are only worth half of what they should be worth.
I've been trying to have lucid dreams for about a month now. But my subconscious is actually adapting! And trying to stop me! I usually roll a die, and if I can consistently guess the number right, I'm dreaming. But lately, whenever I try it in a dream, I always lose the die, or a dream version of one of my friends shows up and peer pressures me out of it. Does my subconscious hate me? And how crazy do I sound right now?
@Barium man, rll
My reality check is to see if my right hand is there, if it is, I know it's a dream.
I wonder how many oeople are going to try this with a 'wet dream'
@Hostile Kids , a lot of the people inside me will try for sure.
To answer question 1 of the F.A.Q, it works only if you are self confident. I had a dream that I started to have sex, but when I looked down, I was just materbaiting... Even in DREAMS I'm lonely.
Sad Capitalist: that is very true. It sometimes happens to me. But when it happens I know I'm in sleep paralysis. While I inevitably have bad hallucination I have learned to conquer them and go back to sleep. Pretty freaky stuff man.
Everyone of my dreams has always been a lucid dream. Its like I just create scenarios in my mind and play them out, knowing that i'm asleep the entire time.
Lucid dreaming can be fun, but I'd advise to not look in a mirror while doing it. You might be horribly deformed/mutilated and it will force you into a nightmare. You can also push on walls to see if you can go through them or not. The best things to do in a lucid dream is to fly, hook up with your crush, basically to whatever you want.
IT HAPPENED TO ME LAST NIGHT AFTER READING THIS PIC FOR THE FIRST TIME! I looked at my hands & clock and killed the Math teacher
@stonhenge4, lol I want to kill my math teacher :/
They make it sound easy..
I've done it before- the "tell people they're not real" thing is hilarious!
I've sen Insidious. I'm not going to try this. *shudders*
@wchollett, I think of heard of Insidious, what's it about again?
@Stefanie, It's where there's a couple whose son gets sick and starts lucid dreaming, but in his lucid dreaming, there's a demon trying to take over his body, getting closer to him every time he sleeps. The father must then re-take lucid dreaming from his own child, which was psychically shut off because he ran into the same problem with a creepy looking skeleton-y woman in a wedding dress. This reintroduces the danger of the woman to the father, but he has to lucid dream in order to recover his son's spirit, which was cornered by and hiding from the demon.
@Stefanie, But there's a twist ending that is kind of creepy scary to think about
Been doing this for years! But I have never used those reality checks.. Gotta try them!
i had a licid dream when i was like 6 or 7. i told somebody that it was just my dream and they pimp slapped me.
I can invite myself?
I won't screw anybody in my dreams, because what happens when you climax? Exactly.
Ive heard you guys talk about your lucid dreams. I've had one before and it was scary. All I wanted to do was wake up. So I imagined a cliff. Jumped off an hit the end. Shot myself (now looking at myself in third person). Shot my grandfather. Tried alot. Anyways. Eventually I opened my eyes. An this sleep paralysis thing? Very scary. It's like. Half of you knows your awake an the other half tells you part of this is still a dream. I've imagined an alien crawling on all fours on my ceiling. And also. That I was in the middle of a holocaust. The end of my bed being crumbled brick an I was curled against it. Crying, when I was little. It was too real.
@Admiral Ackbar, NOT TRYING THIS ANYMORE
@Admiral Ackbar, let this admiral have at it. I relieve you of your duties
I'm gonna do stuff... If you know what I mean
@sad capitalist, the idea of sleep paralysis is fascinating. I can't help but wonder how the neurological activity of a person suffering from sleep paralysis compares to the mind of a schizophrenic or some other delusional disorder.
Sometimes when I have dreams a couple months later I see the dream in real life :l
What If I'm dreaming? What If your comments are fake?
@Smile4thekillcam, WHAT IF YOU'RE FAKE AND IM THE ONE DREAMING!??!?
A new meaning to "Go f*ck yourself"
i feel like thise could being on an "inception" moment
Well had my first lucid dream last night and my second and third and fourth and fifth. It was pretty cool. Never flew or turned into a super saiyan, but in one of them I went jet lie all over like 300 people. Fingers look really weird, very stubby and they almost have little mouths. As for the clock thing, I would look at my wrist and there would always be a new watch, and always a watch with the minute and hour hands. Of course tried banging people. Terrible idea, one turned into a man just before I was gonna start. Never met anyone famous. Need more practice. Each dream lasted 45 minutes. Now that I'm awake and very tired I have one question, how do I turn this off? Need real sleep
Just proof that pics don't have to be funny to be awesome.
While lucid dreaming is possible, I advise against it. According to Carl Jung's theories about dreaming and it's relation to the subconscious, dreams are how the subconscious mind expresses things it picks up that your conscious mind has missed. Through lucid dreaming, you are cheating yourself of the ever important counsel of your subconscious mind.
B*tch please, I can't control my head in a dream to look at my watch
First thing im doing is sexytime with kim kardashian in flight.
I would just have sex with Megan Fox all night....
I don't even dream. All I see when I sleep is black/darkness. When I do dream, I remember it and sometimes I know I'm dreaming
I had a lucid dream that i was fighting a zombie hoard
I shall be the master of dreaming!!!
"I must go, my planet needs me!"
I tried the telling people that they are in a dream one, and one of them shriveled up into a wrinkly corpse... Never again...
Don't do this. Like Sad Capitalist said before I could, you'll experience sleep paralysis. I experienced it once, and I'm never gonna do it again, freaked me the f*ck out.
I have a top that I keep in my pocket at all times, and use it to test whether I'm dreaming or not.
In the only lucid dream i've ever had, i owned at dodgeball. It was awesome!
I'm going t try this. Like right now.
I love doing this
I realized I was dreaming before, and I wanted to go to the beach. So I could teleport, or fly or something, but no, what do I do. Waste the time on a bus -.-
Lucid dreams can cause you to go into a como from anywhere from 3months to a year. So I wouldn't recommend it
Last night I had a dream that Charlie sheen got beat up by a little girl.
Give me two weeks and I'll get back to ya.
I've had lucid dreams before, I usually fly or have sex and then I wake up :(
@Sad Capitalist Happened to me so many times now. I have recently just gotten used to it...
In case of lucid dream don't do anything I just get slapped a lot in case of nightmare open ur eyes it's kinda hard but u can.
Why would you invite obama?
The said ecetera instead of ect
I've heard from a pastor that if a monster in your dream is bothering you you say "in the name of Jesus Christ be gone!" especially demons fear the name
@Whale penis, Noted
@Stefanie, lol a year old post?
I had 2 by accident. I woke up the first time, and the second was a nightmare but I actually made real decisions. Woke up to the feeling like a rod was prodding my back. I'm still wondering about that...
I really don't recommend this. There is no way to stop lucid dreaming. I wish I could I've been having them for a while but if anyone knows please tell me I want to stop!!!
^^Think of school before you go to bed.
@S U O M I...yeah im not looking at myself in the mirror! Once i woke up in sleep paralysis! Oh man so scary!
Actually worked for me.
^waste of xp. And lights not working in a dream is horrid lol.
It's really not that simple :(
I've had a few lucid dreams before
Everything went well til I saw that "9gag" word. That just pisses me off.
In the last one, why didn't they put chuck norris?
I try to lucid dream but I always forget about it at night
Woah it just happened to me today I had 4 levels of dreams! Btu I woke up with paralysis...
Well, I read every single comment, and it sounds cool, but I don't wanna have a bad experience, and that sleep paralysis I've heard it called devil on your back, my friend had that, and he tried screaming for help but he couldn't.
@barium man the exact thing happens to me. I always thought my brain didn't want me to do anything I wanted to do, only what it wanted to do, as a kid. Now after reading your post I understand it's the mind's way of sort of trying to defend against lucid dreaming. If our own brain's don't want us to do it, and there is a defense mechanism against it, then it's probably not safe. The mind is a very complex thing.
SAD dude thnx for making me nervous when I was quite happy
Jimi..... Here I come
Shark boy and lava girl?
I had a lucid dream once, it was to mich effort so i came on funny pocs :D
Guess who just banged Megan fox?
I'm not gonna lie when I was a kid I discovered this and killed all those "monsters".
@Sad Capitalist ; I always unfortunately end up like that after a lucid dream. FML.
My reality check is to slap myself super hard. If it hurts, it's real. If it doesn't, well it's a dream. It really works. Try it.
This picture is ruined for having a 9gag photo in it
Ive been a lucid dreamer ever since i was 9, and i didnt train my self. I hate it
A couple weeks till school starts.. I have time :)
I'm not reading all that sh*t!
Am I the only one who sees the small words and just goes to the comments
No comments? OMG MUST COMMENT NOW!
I Lucid dreamed in nightmares once and i couldnt fight back D'; the weirdest thing in my lucid nightmares was when i got too scared, i couldnt talk or breathe when i looked up my head wouldn't return to its proper postion ;(
Long post.. Might be worth it.. Creepy megusta
Ok so I know this is a very old post but I still want to add something to it. A good way to tell if you are dreaming is to find ice. I know it isn't everywhere but of you are dreaming and touch it it will immediately fall apart . If it's on the ground it just acts like snow and you can walk right through it. :-)
Something to note on SP (sleep paralysis) is that you will experience what you expect to experience. It is YOUR mind making the images
Doctor Who and Beatle dreams her I come.
I have not tried this on purpose, but it has happened to me in the past. Everytime it has occured the dream turned into a nightmare and I always had sleep paralysis afterwards. Some advie before attempting lucid dreaming, do not talk to anyone in the dream. My close friend used to do this all the time, and he was able to meet up with his grandfather during these dreams. Now they are both Native American and are very practiced in their spiritualism. Well his grandfather, my friend with him, made the mistake of talking to a woman in his dream and she turned out to be an evil spirit. His grandfather died that night in his sleep. So, just be wary of what you do in these dreams.
Im gonna throw Obama AT HIMSELF
(SEPTEMBER 1, 2013) trying this! THIS IS GOING TO BE EPIC! (If this does happen to me, I will report back and tell you if this works. Stay tuned.)
@Stefanie, When I read the other comments, I decided that this may be too dangerous to try.
@Sad Capitalist, I screen capped your comment after saving the pic, just in case I ever do this lucid thing I can remember what to expect
Just saying when you dream you can't control looking at your watch until you relise it's a dream same with all these things
Never pee in a dream
I'm going to sleep more often lol
If this works me gusta
@sad capitalist. Sleep paralysis does ocur but it is more commonly but it is rarely met with hallucinations. More commonly it is met with feeling like you are falling slowly or being dragged. The felingswill go away quickly if you remain calm and let your brian fix the problem. If you panic it will make the feelings (or halucinations) more vivid ad will last longer.
@Sad Capitalist, I was so excited until I read your comment...
Yes! I found this picture!! I found it once and forgot to download
Whenever I sleep while sick I lucid dream and have sleep paralysis, but the paralysis feels like it lasts for ever. It's awful
I have had 2 or 3 lucid dreams but less and less often. They were so fun, make them come back!
I've had a lucid dream. I wished for a hot tub and a phone, and they appeared.
This is so weird. I had a dream like this and I could've sworn it was real. I thought every single thing actually happened. So much so, that I can actually talking to my brother about what we did and he had no idea what I was talking about. So from that I determined that it was a dream, even though I still feel like it actually happened
I always kno when I'm dreaming but would rather not mess with it I have once and it was terrible it turned ion a nightmare and I forgot it was a dream also I don't think my body shuts down during sleep because I wake up with someone shaking me telling me I was screaming
I don't get it, I can't control when in a dream my brain is controlling me an I can't think for my own :(
If you are dreaming (or don't know whether or not you are) and you wanna wake up, just try to roll your eyes into the back of your head and it will be like opening your eyes
It worked! I realized I was dreaming, and tried to fly, so I climbed to the top of a staircase, and jumped off. Unfortunately, it didn't work, and I woke up when I hit the ground.
My reality check, if everybody laughs, then it's a dream
I had a dream last night and was doing a relality check and the letters formed words just fine
I think I'm good with remembering my dreams, any further, and I'll begin to doubt my sanity.
