I'm guessing from this that Netflix didn't do well with Deathnote? Man... I was planning on watching it, but I guess it's too bad to be worth it!
@Lord Burgendy, its not bad if you haven't seen anything to do with death note before.
I've said it thrice and i shall say it once more...
They decided to write their own version, and to me it feels like they just made self indulgent fanfiction.
I mean, if people want to write their own story, they should WRITE THEIR OWN STORY, not capitalize off other's IP.
Really, they even named it "Death Note", zero way to differentiate it by name...
@Lord Burgendy, it's cancer.
@Lord Burgendy, while the story line is terrible. Watch it for the animation of Ryuk! That's the only good thing about it.
@Lord Burgendy, if you go into it thinking it's its own movie and is completely separate from the anime, it's actually not horrible. They change so much from the way Light acts to how L acts, the ending was horrible compared to the anime, but for the movie it was decent. I'd say give it a watch, but don't expect a real life version of the anime
@kurogami, well I watched the show and I have a feeling if I watch the movie it will ruin the show for me
@kurogami, It's still bad either way. If you go into it without knowing anything about Death Note you're still stuck with a movie that has terrible acting, poor pacing, bad dialogue, and a convoluted story.
@Yukimura, its still better than the avatar movie
@kurogami, Nothing's quite as bad as Last Airbender.
@Unidentified Error, you mean like how the movie World War Z didn't follow the book at all? How it took the book cover and burned the rest of the book?
@kurogami, I haven't seen the cartoon and I still hated it. It was so bad. The gf quickly turns into a physcho, the main character is a baby, L is a terrrrrible actor and just annoying when he jumps on chairs, I know that's from the cartoon but it looks stupid when he does it, and just the story in general. The cops are happy their job is easier then L comes and is like no your job should be hard, let's find the hero and arrest him. Cops... "O ok good idea" fack what a waste of time. Never watch it... Anyone
I haven't seen the original, and I enjoyed the Netflix movie. Made me want to see the original stuff, which counts as a win, I think
I was wondering what they were gonna do about his last name since he's a normal American teenager in the movie, but I laughed way to hard when I saw it was "Turner". Like, I know they need to make the name match the character and all, but that is probably the most American name they could have chosen.
I really don't get all of the hatred for the Netflix western adaptation of Death Note. I loved the anime but if anyone actually seriously expected a movie that was an hour and a half long to be completely faithful to a show that had closer to a hundred hours worth of episodes, you're out of your mind.
Most of the hate for the movie seems to be coming from people who would not have been happy no matter how the movie was made.
Getting a product to a wider demographic is not a bad thing. There's a lot of people out there who haven't seen the anime for little reason other than it's an anime. To the untrained American or Canadian eye, the vast majority of animes based on title screens and names look exactly the same, and because of the enormous amount of different anime shows, along with the fact that the majority of them are terrible (even according to anime fans), someone who is not already a fan of anime may have easily overlooked Death Note.
For the record, I'm NOT a fan of anime.
I have no interest in watching any anime that has only subtitles, because I watch most of my television while also playing video games. I can't multitask with a subbed show, because I WILL miss things.
At the same time, I find myself frustrated with the weird emotional shifts present in some anime. I liked Full Metal Alchemist, but every time the colonel went all google eyes about his son in the middle of an otherwise serious scene, or every time Ed had a random shïtfit because someone referenced his height, it destroyed the emotion of that scene. I've been told this is a staple of many animes, and I think from a writer's perspective that this is just bad writing.
I loved the Death Note anime because it had none of that, plus fantastic writing, and the anime is unarguably better than the movie. But please, peoples of the internet, stop taking it personally and getting mad that "they raped my childhood". They weren't thinking of you when they made the movie. It's not about you.
@I Are Lebo,
I feel like it could have gone over much better if, instead of trying to create an "Alternate Universe" using the already established characters, they wrote it as a side story. "The Death Note book has come back, and this time landed in America" or something.
And yes, reaching a wider audience can be good, but by naming the movie "Death Note" (by itself, zero changes to differentiate anything) it can be quite annoying. I believe that had they named it to better explain what differences there would be, and to distance it slightly from the already made and so named series it could have been better accepted. (Yes, there will always be fans who go crazy, but i do believe that it would have gone over better)
@Unidentified Error, I honestly don't think it would have made the slightest difference if they had added a subtitle.
They wanted to do a reimagining instead of a sequel, because they were specifically aiming at people who had not watched the anime, which is a larger demographic than fans of the anime.
I thought it was good. Not great but it wasn't painful. I wasn't expecting the same story i was just hoping it wasn't as bad as dbz evolution. The guy who did L did a great job, the story was good but brisk for the time frame. And they kept some good lines from the show. I liked how the deaths were like a final destination scene as well. Yes things are different but the plot is the same and it was decent. A decent live action anime movie! That's some rare shjt!
They should have just dubbed English over the Japanese Deathnote movies. At least they were decent
I actually liked this Death Note. It wasn't executed the best way, but it had heart.
I like the anime and the movie. Not triggered
I like this meme
This movie with Keanu Reeves is called "knock knock" and it is....interesting
Wait what movie has Keaneu Reeves buried like that.
Am I having Alzheimer's?
Am I having Alzheimer's?
@ZappleFritter, it's a movie where he cheats on his wife with two teenager girls and they ruin his life by exposing him and leaving him to die. They said it was pretty bad because he over acts I a scene yelling how he Bought the girls pizza
I thought it was pretty terrible, but it made me rewatch the anime and that was still awesome
I enjoyed it
Watch Death Note the Musical. It will restore your hopes in humanity.
This is the only way to kill John Wick
@Ealm, you must not know the boogey man very well if you think this will kill him.
@Ealm, he doesn't die in this movie
