Yeah they actually have tracking algorithms in use so even when you’re not on Facebook your data is logged. If I remember correctly there are 98 separate pieces of information they’ve admitted to tracking and selling. This from a guy who doesn’t us Facebook except to track birthdays. I won’t login to it on my computer to keep them out.
@BigJohnson86, My computer and phone are now linked for ads. I looked up bus tickets on my computer for a friend then scrolled past an ad for Megabus on my phone an hour later.
@PBnJ, nah man it’s the same program tracking you they sell this info to advertising agencies and target the ads based on what you’ve looked at. It ain’t just Facebook though. Every major internet hub does it.
@BigJohnson86, Yea. I just find it annoying. I’m a horrible consumer. I get buy stuff regardless of having coupons, and I don’t buy new stuff often. I know what I want, so ads just get in the way. I’m less likely to buy stuff from ads when they’re annoying.
@BigJohnson86, use a vpn, clear al cookies and temp files regularly. Reset static ip if possible. Double bounce vpn if possible (i use windscribe). While using the vpn i get no targeted ads.
@BigJohnson86, except even that doesn’t help. They’ve got your phone’s IP address logged and associates to your account, and most websites out there have something called The Facebook Pixel which is a little one pixel sized link that tells Facebook whenever it’s loaded and by what IP address. So literally any web browsing you do from any device that’s ever been associated with your Facebook account is reported back Facebook. It’s some of the worst, without a doubt illegal tracking I’ve ever seen, but the government doesn’t care because they’re all in the pocket of the corporations.
Quit facebook 4 years ago. And while I sometimes wish I could post witty status updates and offensive memes for an audience of my friends and family, I do not miss it at all.
@The 911 Masturbator, same. I’m the only one in my family who has, though. Feels weird, and I get left out of things, but I didn’t get trolled by Russians, so I’ve got that going for me.
If my dad and step mom didn't communicate with me solely through Facebook, I would have deleted it s long time ago. Not only has it become cancer, the whole information thing (which I have known for a long time but no one believed me about it back then) has made it a liability, and needs to be held accountable.
There was actually an issue that came up during his House Joint Committees testimony, where Zuck testified about how FB collects data on non-users as well.
I only use it for free video and photo storage. I don't use my real name or location. Nothing private has been used. It's a great free cloud.
Old people be like
I just use Facebook for linking game data on my phone.
Except that's wrong
You can download ALL the data Facebook has on you. It's interesting to see their opinion of what interests I have based on my adds
By now it’s getting pretty hard to live a normal life without allowing at least one corporation to access your information. There are legal safeguards in place and terms and conditions that the company adheres to, it’s not the user’s fault if the company breaches them. Saying that it’s the user’s fault for posting information is like saying that a rape victim is at fault for dressing provocatively.
