Tell that to the guy who got arrested for teaching his dog to Nazi salute
@jouze, here here
@jouze, the UK doesn’t have free speech
@jouze, my friend posted a school shooting joke sentence to a group chat and got put in jail for three months, he is currently on house arrest and has been for three weeks even though he was only supposed to have two, all he did was make that joke but they have punished him more than kids who have brought actual weapons to school since then, I'm not saying the systems broken, but it's all over the floor in pieces
@jouze, the guy got out and only paid £800. Frankly I rather have my kids go to school safely than not have the freedom to spread hate speech (which Count didn't).
@WhyNotBoth, “only” paid 800. For making a joke that someone else didn’t appreciate.
Also, I’m pretty sure he’s refusing to pay. Were I in his shoes I would rather go to prison than pay a fine (and two years of my life in court) for telling a joke.
@MILLIONSAREDEAD, where was this?
@I Are Lebo, the whole case was misunderstood, the judge himself said so, it was mainly the media that, as usual, try to start a witch hunt like they always try with PewDiePie. I wouldn't pay for it either but all I'm saying is that being unable to spread hate is speech is much better than being shot, don't you think?
@WhyNotBoth, please clarify what side of the argument you are on. It is unclear to me. Your last sentence makes no sense.
@I Are Lebo, basically:
1. Freedom of speech is not censorsed in the UK despite foreign belief
2. Even if it was, it's much better to be censored than being shot dead
What I said in my previous statement is that Counts case was just misunderstood and spiralled out of control by the media
@WhyNotBoth, there have been multiple people in the UK that have been imprisoned for things they have posted on social media. And not for threats, but for ‘offensive comments’. There was a girl who was fined for posting a song lyrics quote on twitter. Some were arrested for criticizing Islam.
So your first point is nonsense.
Secondly, if your barometer is getting murdered, your scale is absolutely useless. That would be like saying that it’s okay that I robbed you because I didn’t also murder you.
Count’s case took two years, and multiple court dates. Blaming that on the media shows an utter lack of knowledge of how the legal system works in the UK (or really anywhere else).
You do not know what you are talking about.
@I Are Lebo, these are the current limitations of speech in the UK:
Incitement to racial hatred
Incitement to religious hatred
Incitement to terrorism (plus a lot of not-very-well defined stuff about distributing or owning materials likely to be of use to a terrorist)
Treason (this includes advocating the abolition of the monarchy, though the Law Lords have "stated the bleeding obvious" when they opined that this has not been enforceable for many years)
Defamation (this has a high burden of proof on the defendent, and leads to a worrying number of people coming to the UK to prosecute libel cases)
Indecency including the corruption of public morals (again, good luck trying to enforce this one)
Many restrictions on reporting court cases
Time, manner and place restrictions
Would any of these censor you? And last time I checked as soon as someone said something even remotely off in US you get sued for defamation and used as threats
@WhyNotBoth, with the exception of cases where someone was arrested for posting a threat, the laws in the UK have gone way overboard. There were 857 arrests in 2015 for Facebook and twitter messages, and many of those messages were not released to the public following the arrest.
Many of them involve that indecency clause you mentioned. It IS being enforced.
Seriously, do some research into this. ‘Hate speech’ is so entirely subjective, it means that whether or not something you say or comment is unlawful is up to someone else’s perception more than your intent.
If you are not free to say “I hate judge so-and-so, he’s an asshole”, you don’t have free speech. If you’re not free to say “Islam is the religion of peace, and they’ll cut your head off if you disagree”, you do not have free speech.
@WhyNotBoth, or how about posting factual truths like “Mohammad was a child molester who married a six year old, started fücking her at 9, and regularly beat her”?
Entirely true, and will get you imprisoned in the UK.
If you think that’s freedom, you don’t understand what freedom is.
And then the bomb went off.
Is this really how people from other countries see this? A refusal to risk lives as an inability to make jokes?
@Weird Porn Stash, the difference is the kids in other countries say it as a joke as well
@PunnyBaker, Makes sense. People don't joke about it here (at least not in public) because it's taken so seriously.
@Weird Porn Stash, no no, people in other countries see The USA as a joke because we have issues that are easily solvable, but for some reason 10% of the country controls the government and won’t let them change stupid laws that don’t make sense any more.
@ios11, lol only %10 control the government and its laws huh? Howd you get that number?
@GunLovingMerican, yeah, I’d say it’s less than that.
@Weird Porn Stash, people don’t joke about it here because some of the people who say things like that aren’t joking.
@ios11, Those that have the most power to make the change are fighting each other so that they can keep their jobs, not to improve the lives of their constituents.
It was a blast!
@theLOVEseat, I heard the joke bombed
@add eggs then stir, It really blew up in his face.
Yeah in the uk we just ignore things like millions of little girls being gamg raped by muslim grooming gangs over a 20 year period. And our government being so authoritarian that we cant even carry butter knives.
@BlazingBowman, but nazi jokes and conservative speakers? Unacceptable!
@Kangaroo Jacked, unless however you happen to have a brownish skintone because then hate speach doesnt apply to you. Go wave those isis flags while marching down the street talking about killing all the jews well make sure you have your free speech.
@BlazingBowman, millions? Bro in the whole of Newcastle it was 700 women and girls and it wasn't just Muslims. You need to stop reading your news off of Facebook
The reason why usa freaks out over a joke is because people actually do it here.
Didn't the latest school shooter have like six bombs that just didn't go off? It's not a joke here in the US man it's reality
@Sluggernot, also a shotgun and a revolver. Whatever happend to the scary fully semi automatic assault rifle being the number one killer.
@BlazingBowman, the real question was where were all the armed citizens to stop it. I thought it was in Texas.
@nepheal, highschool=no guns
I feel bad for the kids you're "teaching to."
It’s not a joke when it happens. What the fack dude. Especially when there’s a correlation between people making comments like that and actually doing it.
I know that kid. He was kicked out of US and now he blows up schools all over the world.
Lol sort of true. Millennials and gen z ruined jokes and context for anyone.
I like how they said "teach to" like it's not an interactive process that is supposed to engage the students as opposed to just an automated, one way exchange of information that requires the student to abandon critical thinking and free thought and accept what they are given as the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.... actually, I don't like that, and I just made myself kinda sad.
Fvck off. Don't make a joke out of this because kids actually died you fvck.
When a country has a school shooting seemingly every month, then yeah, we're not going to take it as a joke.
Teach to...huh...I sure hope it’s not grammar you’re teaching.
They actually caught 2 kid's in the UK who were obsessed with the Columbine massage and were planning a school shooting. If they catch you with a gun in the UK on Monday you'll be in jail by Wednesday serving 16 years no questions asked
Hahaha, terrorism only happens in the US hahaha. Good joke funny pics, very funny
