I’ll have you know I’ve been playing mature video games since I was 8 and I’ve only killed 12 animals.
Technically speaking (in the U.S.) it's not illegal for a minor to buy a rated M game (with the exception of California, where it is illegal). It's just companies adopt the rating agency as guideline to follow, so it's company policy that prevents you from buying it.
