If we didn’t have WMD’s, guns, and other forms of modern assault and warfare, a phalanx would be one of the scariest sights to behold.
@The Common Shaman, idk if I was forced to run into of those I'd be pretty scared too.
@Murderin Mike, if you’re referring to the pic, that is a phalanx, good sir.
@The Common Shaman, what about archer groups? Looks like a good set of archers or crossbowmen would tear that group to shreds
@Fumble surf, have you seen 300? A group of good shieldsmen geared with equally good shields can defend each other with a tight knit wall of metal. Save for a flanking blow, or the occasional well aimed arrow
@Fumble surf, but throw in a trebuchet..
@The Common Shaman, the manipular legion was far superior to the phalanx though so that would be scarier
@Univofga01, ahh the Roman legions. I would have to agree.
@The Common Shaman, SHIELD WALL
@The Common Shaman, I was about to have to interject here before I saw the comments about my legions. We'll spank the pants off those frightened Greek farmers
@Fumble surf, back when the Phalanx was an incredibly popular military tactic the armies around Greek/Macedonia at the time didn’t really use that many missile troops of any at all. It was basically massive fvck off lines of phalanx and some mercenaries protecting the flanks. And maybe some small cavalry force.
@The Common Shaman, Shield walls for days!
Just look at the tight footwork and those firm shield walls, mmmm
@Guy Fawkes, I think you're thinking of a testudo
We shall funnel them through the hot gates where their long spears count for nothing. And by hot gates I mean my buttcheeks. And by long spears... you get it
If anyone has been in the military and in the front line, how does it feel? I can't imagine what went through the minds of the soldiers in the first row (especially); looking dead ahead at the enemy that more likely to be struck by lightning than it is for you to survive to live another day.
@Hallucinated corpse, you’d be surprised at how formidable the phalanx was when it was first introduced as a military strategy. It was nigh unbeatable in the right circumstances. Just remember being in the front wasn’t as terrifying since you had a death stick that kept them quite far away. Also your 6-7 friends behind you also had theirs pointing out and forward overlapping with your own death stick to kill anyone who could somehow push through the wall of death.
Landsknecht had a better Pike formation
They have nice ankles
