So, the EU has just banned memes (Article 13), in 5 days it could be impossible to access porn (or anything considered ‘adult’) without giving your ID and credit card details to PornHub, and the EU just approved a law that means every car produced after 2022 will be basically incapable of breaking the speed limit.
If anyone wants me, I’ll be building a compound in a mountain range somewhere in the mid-West.
@Nellybert , Did anyone ever watch ‘New Adventures Of Superman’ about 15 years ago? There was an episode where a guy come back from the future to kill Superman because he’s created a utopian society which is just insanely boring - he says “it’s so dull, you’d blow your brains out - but you can’t, because there aren’t any guns!”
No memes, no porn, no fast cars...... Suddenly a nuclear apocalypse doesn’t look like the worst possible future.
@Nellybert , Ahhh, the Government knows what is best for us, just sit back and relax. The books they will ban, the movies they will not allow to be made, the food that will no longer be available, the cars you can’t drive anymore, the money that you earn that you can no longer keep, technology that is subversive, people being re-educated, you get the point...
Or do you?
@DFYANT, I don’t know, no one from the government has told me my opinion on it yet.
@Nellybert , maybe the people behind brexit had a point
@hemaybetrash, People behind Brexit? You mean the 17.4million people who voted for it?
@Nellybert , I meant the people who like proposed it officially, but yeah those people too
@Nellybert , I don't know much about the EU but is it possible for voters in Poland for example to contribute votes or representatives that would make laws that affect people in Spain? I'm curious as to how EU law works. I originally thought it was just a free trade thing.
@hemaybetrash, Yep. Biggest exercise in democracy in British history, but now it’s on the rocks because of f**king politicians.
@RedRussia4, To really simplify it - think of it as being like the US, but with countries in place of States. We all have our own laws on some stuff, but for other things the laws set by the EU (so, written and voted on by representatives of each country) override national laws and apply to all member states.
@Nellybert , honestly Europe is such a joke at this point. Just glass the continent so we can all move on.
@Nellybert , curious, I don’t know much about laws or the EU. Is it possible for the people to rule against it? Or is all of the EU pretty much screwed?
@Bobaganusche88, Not sure a nuclear war will do a lot to improve the availability of access to porn and memes....
@Helicopter , I don’t know all the ins and outs, but I don’t think so. It’s be like a US state deciding to ban guns - wouldn’t be allowed, because they’re a part of the USA and so have signed up to the Constitution which overrides everything else. Our politicians signed the Maastricht Treaty, and that puts EU law above national ones.
@Nellybert , who said anything about war?
@Bobaganusche88, When you said ‘glass the continent’ I thought you meant ‘reduce it to a sheet of glass by melting it with nuclear fire’.
Did you just mean, like, have a bar fight and hit it with a pint glass?
@Bobaganusche88, I'll call the Covenant
@Nellybert , I meant fly over Europe and nuke the whole continent. No time for retaliation.
@Nellybert , good plan i xan only see mass riots in the future. Leading to civilians gainibg access to highly protected and dangerous weapons or military bases by over running the military and then some idiot launches the big one leading to a massive nuclear war. So imma build my bomb shelter and just wait it out while the world falls apart by moronic politicians which is probably the largest cause of war across the planet.
@Nellybert , this is why brexit won
@Vegeta the God, I’d argue that those most likely to riot (based on recent historical precedent) are those least likely to have voted but most likely to be pro-EU. (A disaffected youth of ethnic minority background, who like the freedom of international movement the EU offers, but have least respect for/interest in laws like Article 13). And if they do riot, it’ll be to loot rather than to overthrow.
No, we’ll have a lot of political posturing and outrage in some newspapers - but as it’s the ‘we have the moral high-ground’ left who support the EU, societal pressure will keep down organised protesting against it, and nothing will really change.
That’s no reason not to build the bunker though, just because the world will continue doesn’t mean it’s not a good idea to step away from it.
@FPVeteranWolf, It feels a lot like there’s a whole bunch of people who either forget that, or don’t care.
If they were American, they’d be the same ones shouting things about ‘not my President’ - even if Trump had won the (kinda irrelevant) popular vote as well as the actual vote.
"Very funny, O' Brian. Now beam down my clothes."
Chief O'BRIEN at Work! Very funny comic on Tumblr
Not if I raise the shields first you flippin’ Irish rip-off of Montgomery Scott!
