Although I do not and will not ever support Harris, this is a perfect example of click bait and why kids under 18 (and in school) aren't allowed to vote. One would read this as "3 more hours of school" when really she's suggesting school sponsored after school day-care with available tutoring (which already exists to some degree). So instead of going home to do homework before going outside, you basically have friends and teachers to help you with homework, then you go home to play. The main reason for this though is to line up students and most parents working schedule and is also why she's only pushing for it in elementary schools, since it's not as scary on parents to have middle school children home alone a few hours before they get home.
@Drunk Pantless Uncle, that being said, teachers already don't get paid enough. Good luck passing this over on them and their unions to stay an extra 3hours a day and not be properly compensated.
@Drunk Pantless Uncle, could you repeat that? I couldn't hear you because you're not wearing pants
@Drunk Pantless Uncle, well time to just tax the rich to pay for it then. But seriously this is a reasonable idea to help people that can never work cuz of the money. I could see this work at a local level where you get retirees to pitch in and help or grad students but on a national scale I don’t see it.
@Empshok, oh shjt, my bad fam.
SO INSTEAD OF GOING HOME TO DO HOMEWORK BEFORE GOING OUTSIDE,YOU BASICALLY HAVE FRIENDS AND TEACHERS TO HELP YOU WITH HOMEWORK,THEN YOU GO HOME TO PLAY.
@Drunk Pantless Uncle, Thank you for the explanation. That was well stated. Especially the all caps version.
@BigJohnson86, I agree as well. I'm not sure how the vetting process should go with retirees. I know my mother, an accountant for 30+ years couldn't help my cousin with common core. So would they have to go to school as well?
@Drunk Pantless Uncle, personally I wouldn’t mind something like what you describe. The issue is gonna be the backlash from the misinformed, as well as, if it’s set to line up with parents schedules, there’s less work needed for buses if parents can pick up their kids. You’ll have a smaller legit issue, and a larger issue founded in idiocy.
@That one lurker, I’d imagine more as supervision rather than instruction. I’m an engineer that can’t figure out what tf my 12 year old nephews supposed to be doing for basic algebra so I sympathize. That’s why I’d like grad students or something to help. I could explain how algebra works and get him solving problems correctly and ask one of the other kids why tf there are blocks for algebra. For fvcks sake just get the variables on one side and the numbers on the other or foil get these blocks outta here. Honestly my vetting for retirees is talk to the kids and ask if they should be allowed to watch other people’s kids. I got no problem saying my mom would be great and my dad would be dicey at best.
@BigJohnson86, it would be interesting for a "part-time teachers" program. I know teachers have to have a certain amount of hours before they are actually made into real teachers. Maybe if they gained half credit time for this particular work they could get in another job.
@Cloverleaf, buses could still be used, just would run a different times. If not, a few weeks/months of training could turn them into helpers for the after school programs. Parents already entrust them to not only provide supervision while on the buses but with their childrens safety on the road and most bus drivers are already part time unless they are the ones that also are employed for field trips, etc.
@Drunk Pantless Uncle, I completely agree. As for the teacher compensation, this bill should include that the teachers get major overtime pay and or an overall raise.
Since most of the students wouldn’t stay after hours, most of the teachers wouldn’t have to stay either. Those who do stay, as I said should get major overtime or a big bump up in their salary.
Overall, teachers should be paid more regardless of extra hours, but this could be a step in the right direction.
@Drunk Pantless Uncle, I have a friend getting his teaching credentials right now who is getting paid to do after school tutoring. Most after school tutors aren’t the teachers themselves, but people who are also substitute teachers. If anything, it just gives them more reliable, steady work.
@Drunk Pantless Uncle, as someone who works from home, and therefore will happily do both school runs, I think a 9-5 school day is a pretty good idea. Once you drop them off at about 9, you've gotta go pick them up at 3. You only really get about four and a half hours of work in in-between. People who work in offices or commute to another location to work just can't fit a job in that small a time frame. No wonder many stay at home and take benefits. As for other nations, Tunisian kids do a six or six and a half day week at school, longer hours than most places, and they can speak 5 languages at a very young age. The whole 9-3 thing is just how it's been, so people think it must stay that way. Maybe the existing system is bad.. then again, studies have suggested that kids just don't have that type of attention span to be 'learning' that many hours a day.
@TheMightyImp, it wouldn't be longer classes. It would just be after school programs. Can be time to do homework while having help from peers or teachers or some type of recess/outdoor activities
@Drunk Pantless Uncle, seemed a bit weird.. that would be like 3 extra classes what are they gonna shove in those slots for students? Then i was like meh im not a student so i dont care anyway.
@BlazingBowman, bruh you're like the 3rd person to mention this. It would not be classes or learning. Harris proposed a extended break in the middle of the day for students to relax or unwind almost like a siesta in Latin American countries or after school programs to knock out homework (that they'd spend 2-3 hours doing at home anyway) or extracurricular activities like sports or woodshop/mechanic classes. Something that makes school fun and interesting again instead of cramming a syllabus worth of standardized testing requirements in their heads
@Drunk Pantless Uncle, yes i know i read the whole comment.
@Drunk Pantless Uncle, it can't, by definition, be homework if it's done at school in any capacity. Homework is additional practice, or pre reading to help understand an upcoming subject, or additional reading to see a child's ability to comprehend and then communicate back their learning. It, crucially, teaches them time management skills, prioritising the essential things in life which have an immovable deadline against equally important things like socialising and self expression which can be done without set deadlines. Also, as I thought i mentioned but I don't think I did in retrospect, the longer days would work with shorter classes more often, and even longer break times to pad out the day. The short attention span is a biological thing, certain stages of child development happen around specific ages, and especially younger people need change often to stay engaged.
We appear to be agreeing, but of course, on funny pics, it nor normally turns into a debate for no good reason.
@TheMightyImp, also, I, as many, can only comment on the proposals in my local area. Maybe it will be day care where you are and they just play with bean bags and water tables, but for my kids, at their ages, in my area, the plans are for shorter classes more often, so (to give one example) instead of science 2 days a week, they do a shorter language class 3 or 4 days a week.
This clearly wouldn't work with home economics or any other subject where an experiment will take a set amount of time and results etc would need to be written up straight afterwards
@Drunk Pantless Uncle, could be supervised (by one teacher) 3rd year teaching students helping in the afterschools
@Drunk Pantless Uncle, isn't this basically after school clubs? We always had two later bus times for after clubs and sports practices. Pretty sure there were after school tutoring sessions/spaces that used the same bus staging. Not that this is a negative, I just don't really see the difference from the late buses for people who stay later for a variety of reasons
Sen. Kamala Harris is a cunt
@Janky McSkanky, pretty sure most women find this offensive. They don’t wanna be connected to this twat at all
@Janky McSkanky, apparently 3 people want 3 more hours of school
Kamala Harris also wants you to pay for criminals’ health care with your hard earned income, keep that in mind
@The nOly One, in most countries taxpayers already do that for all of the criminals in prison.
@The nOly One, yeah we kind of already do if you think about it. When prisoners get medical attention their bills are usually paid with government money, which is taxes. So it wouldn’t be anything new unfortunately
@shake n blake, it would be a massive increase in taxes to pass what Kamala Harris is proposing, so it would be new
@The nOly One, do you have a source on that massive tax increase part? i was unaware of that
@The nOly One, I’m not sure what you are trying to get at when you say “criminals”. Do you mean poor people who can’t afford healthcare, or did she make a plan to provide exclusively criminals with free healthcare of some sort?
@shake n blake, She wants to provide free healthcare to illegal immigrants
@The nOly One, I feel like we should have a process to legalize the illegal immigrants in our country so we can at least get them to start paying taxes, and then when they are legal they won’t be exploited as much by employers who have an excuse to pay them below minimum wage. Then since they can get real jobs they will contribute taxes and be able to raise themselves up to no longer need to live off of government programs. Kinda like food stamps. A lot of people don’t realize how good food stamps are for this country, it’s amazing how successful they are.
Kalama! KALAMA SHUK DE DAE!
Every teacher ever: "fvck you Satan"
Maybe the extra time will be spent at recess...
Was she educated by Floridaman?
