Their point wasn't that nuking people wouldn't take innocent lives, its that if you are issuing the order for a retaliatory strike, the thought of taking one more innocent AMERICAN life by your own hand in cold blood (not the easiest thing in the world for most to do at the best of times, which was why firing squads where used with mostly blanks with one or two live rounds so no one knows which one actually killed them) on a day you know you're already losing or have lost MILLIONS of other innocent Americans might be a bridge to far for one man that already has to decide to avenge the nation. Mutually Assured Destruction, the policy credited with keeping the first and only 2 nukes used in anger that way, only works when both know they die. People have risked more on longer odds than "can a man butcher an inncoent person in cold blood on the worst day of his life".
@thrawnfett, exactly. War requires hard choices why make them harder? The bombs dropped in world war 2 killed less people on both sides than invasion and continued battle would.
@thejamesshow00, agreed, I have seen Japanese plans to give school children backpacks with explosives to crawl under invading tanks.
But there are simply shear technically problems with that idea. What if that guy went on vacation, or the initial procedure to implant the code kills the guy. It's just not practical
@thejamesshow00, unfortunately morality isn’t just math. Or it isn’t to everyone. I agree, war requires hard choices. I’m even inclined to agree that we made the right call. But we didn’t hit a military base. It was a city. With regular folks. And yeah, lots of soldiers and citizens who might have covertly or overtly worked against our forces but still... at the time there were a lot of civilians. My personal belief is that we made the best of a truest horrible decision. But it’s been said that the solution to make the right, but awful choice is grief. I think I’m still gonna grieve for the lives lost that didn’t want any part of the war. I’m not crippled by it and frankly rarely think on it. However when I do... I grieve just a little. I hope that decisions like that remain hard.
@thejamesshow00, hell, the fire bombing of Tokyo killed more than either of the nukes did
@Dexter Grif, I always bring up this point. It’s such a forgotten part of the war.
@Canis Arktos, while it wasn't a base I'm pretty sure I read that those cities were their industrial heartland. So it broke the back of their war machine.
@thejamesshow00, so personally I agree with the idea that an invasion would be far more costly than the Nukes, but a lot of historical research has shown that a invasion, though planned, may not have been necessary. Stalin and Roosevelt had an agreement that the USSR would invade japans puppet state in Manchuria after the Germans were defeated, then invade japan from the north as the US/UK struck from the south. However the Germans were beaten faster than expected, and FDR died, leaving Truman with the decision to drop the bombs or keep the deal with the soviets. Between the first and second bombing the Red Army overran Manchukuo in 10 days, taking the majority of Japanese food supplies with it. Had the Allies besieged the Japanese home islands after defeating japan in china & Manchuria, there is a chance we could’ve reached the same outcome with less civilian deaths. But history is full of what ifs we could never comprehend the full consequences they would bring about.
@thrawnfett, I thought it was because they looked at most politicians and figured that if they gave them an excuse to legally murder someone, there was way too high a chance of them gutting the volunteer ‘Just to check the capsule was there’.
@MetalHeadTony, it was actually drilled in to my head as a kid, general Curtis LeMay was my great grandfathers cousin
Pretty unpractical to. If you need to launch those things on a seconds notice youre not gonna have time to rip open his ribcage and dig through there to find the codes.
@CocoasBro, not to mention the probable time it will take the President to throw up from the expirence as well
Since that person would be around the president all of the time, it would probably be pretty easy to figure out who they were. And if our enemies figured out who it was and killed them themselves, they could steal the codes themselves... Also, mass murdering people is inconsiderate...
@Blaylock1978, Fairly certain such a person would be even more well protected than the president, or at the very least their corpse would be. Even if an assassination was successful, there's no way they'd get close enough for an extraction.
People underestimate the resolve of world leaders. (“Good” or “bad”)
Many would opt to tear it out with their bare hands if the patriot didn’t do it themselves.
"How am I supposed to kill people if I have to look them in the eye when I do it?"
@SimonPetrikov, so unfair
Could you imagine being that guy tho. Hunted by everyone of Americans enemy's. And knowing that at any moment the president could just hack into you.
Who is this communist and what’s he doing in America?
Who exactly would make the president kill him and 2nd i highly doubt if the us government decided it was time for nuclear war i dont think one innocent lofe would stop it. This sounds like a 5th graders hmwk assignment of how to achieve world peace who obviously doesnt understand how the world works yet
edit: AND WHO TF WOULD VOLUNTEER??
@jerriest jerry , me, and I would absolutely keep the president on the brink with half wanting to kill me codes or not, and half loving me to bits. I would forever be that lovable d--- you hate to know grow to like. And when it's time and it's truly for the best, I'll look them in the eyes and say "Let them all know what my kill count was, name it after me" as I'm mutilated by my closest friend.
Sorry Karen. Looks like you're going to see the Great Manager in the sky.
Then there'd be trump stabbing everyone for fun.
This only works if your opponent cares about life as much as you do.
Lol there's already blood on the white house carpet *cough clinton
Or maybe it wasn't implemented because it's a retarded idea?
Hundreds of millions?! Wtf. It would take many a bombs to get that achievement.
My response would be "George are you saying you volunteer for the first position?"
Sounds good in theory but imo usually speaking that sounds to close to murder vs where the bomb goes off may not be
How about th he fact that the codes change periodically.
That would be a bone chilling story for history
George had the codes implanted... president: “Where is George? I need the codes now” George oblivious to the situation, cruising PornHub and rubbing one out...
