I’ll never understand the appeal of drugs/alcohol why would anyone to lose control of their mental faculties is it really so hard to live in your own head
@eleven, the case is usually wanting to ignore or avoid their issues, like barely that many who drink do it for the feeling of alcohol alone. Or they need it “to have fun”
@Dexios S Divine, That’s a vast generalization. Most people don’t drink or get high to nurse some psychological wound or because they feel they need it to be able to have fun. They do it because they enjoy the buzz.
Some people will fall to addiction, sure. And some people will use it to dull a part of their existence they don’t like.
But to say that it’s the normal is ludicrous. People do it because it feels good.
@eleven, because as humans, they want what they can’t have. Or to be cool in front of others
@The Mythic Canuck, I'd be careful with that statement too though. I'm perfectly capable of having fun without alcohol but on occasion I enjoy drinking to enhance fun I'm already having. It's like saying that people who play videogames HAVE to play video games to have fun
edit: I misread your comment. upon a second read through I fully agree with you. apologies for any confusion.
@eleven, you will when you are older. Or you won't. Some people just like the taste and you don't lose control if you imbide responsibly. More of a loosening up type thing and social activity then anything else. My wife makes some really great Homebrew beer and has been teaching me the ways of the cicerone. More of an art form than for the alcohol, that's just a buzzy perk.
@The Mythic Canuck, I'm glad you worded this so well. People that think other people "need to drink to have fun or suppress emotions" annoy the shjt out of me because 9 out of 10 times they've never drank in moderation to get a nice buzz, loosen up and make the most of a social event. Drinking is literally the most social thing in history. It connects every age and culture of the world. I've met some of the coolest people of my life over a few beers and having a laugh. If you don't want to drink, that's cool. But do think your better than people who don't because you can "enjoy life without intoxication". It's no different than people wanting to eat top notch food. You don't need a $100 steak cooked by a chef. Is it nice and more enjoyable than just a boring cheap "steak" from Chili's? Yes. Yes it is.
@eleven, I don’t drink to get drunk. I used to have an alcohol problem then was sober for 4 months but recently broke it. The reason I did was so I could sleep. I don’t get drunk. Just enough that I can easily fall asleep without thinking of the woman I loved who left me for another guy.
@eleven, birds sometimes eat fruit that has fermented a little to catch a “buzz” so I wonder why they do it too. Even dolphins catch a buzz with puffer fish and who knows why. Maybe it’s just an animal thing to take things that alters the mind because some find it fun. But too much fun can also be a bad thing and will make someone think they need it to have fun. Can’t honestly say but it is truly a puzzling question
@eleven, Most drugs don’t really make you lose control of your mental state except in very high doses. It basically just relaxes you and feels very strange, call it modifying your mental and physical state, not obliterating them. When I consume a drug (alcohol is a drug) I’m looking to lower my inhibitions and have fun with friends/new people. I hate feeling out of control or the idea of waking up with no memory of a night so I monitor my intake and have enough to just enjoy easy laughs and dumb fun without feeling out of my mind. For me, it calms my nerves and I like that the uptight walls we all build around ourselves come down for a limited time and we can enjoy each other’s perspectives and company without so many social expectations and norms dictating our behavior. There are plenty of people that don’t enjoy those feelings though whether it’s physical discomfort or the lowered inhibitions of an already obnoxious species of ape so I get why some people prefer sobriety.
@eleven, Plus, some people spend a lot of time in total, almost brutal, control of all facets of their life. I can get why they would be into a night of just letting go and not giving a fvck for once.
@eleven, I really do get that, as loosing my mental edge permanently is one of my biggest fears in life. Along with addiction running strong in my family.
But, I have made the rule that I dont drink unless I'm hanging out with friends (I've included discord voice chat because of the pandemic), because when I'm with them it helps quell the voices of "youre not good enough" and "why bother with anything" in the back of my mind.
@Drunk Pantless Uncle, @The Mythic Canuck *cracks beer* sooo... who's buyin the steak steak?
@3DAnimator, oddly enough I have that exact same rule and made that same exception because of the pandemic. However I do limit my self when it's a discord chat. Just a light buzz
@random09, exxxxactly. Just enough to relax and have a good time
@eleven, my biggest fear is getting more brain dammage than I already have. I don't want to be brainwashed again by Ћ liberal media like I once was.
@eleven, yes, yes it is that hard.
@The Mythic Canuck, ... every convo Ive ever seen or heard with drug users has been the same with exceptions of people who are legitimately tolerant of things like alcohol who just enjoy the taste and cant get drunk easy if at all in low amounts, Besides that theres always an issue they’re suppressing, people just like wording it nicely so it doesn’t seem like an issue, not even an opinion or generalization, Im getting this from years of observations and first hand stories. If you need it to “get loose” or whatever nice term, you got anxiety/stress issues, the list of explanations can go on. People dont like me saying things like this because they put me on a pedestal and say im talking down to them, or being judgey, im just pointing out the root of things, but people would rather lie to themselves or paint me a villain and stay hooked on whatever vice they choose. Id rather waste my money on games to destress, less risk of bodily harm or stupid mistakes
But you still need ID.
