There is actually a proportioning valve under the handle of most of these shower fixtures. It allows you to control max amount of hot so you or your children dont get hurt from hot water.

My shower has a thermometer the tells the the exact temp of the water. Makes getting the perfect temp easy. Even lights up the shower head blue, green, and red based off of a temperature range.
