@Drunk Pantless Uncle, dogs have a unique scent gland near their anus, that's what they're sniffing, so they know who that dog is when they find that scent other places.

@Drunk Pantless Uncle, dogs can tell all kings of things from smelling another dog's butt. Dogs noses have something like 300 million receptors. They can tell whether another dog is sick or healthy, whether they're male or female, and even if they've met the dog before. Anal glands produce secretions that give off a certain odor depending on a whole bunch of other conditions, and dogs can basically read the odor to determine those conditions.

Fun fact: dogs sniff other dogs butts because they have unique smells. They can pretty much tell what they need to know from smelling the other dog's butt.
