Now this isn’t to say there aren’t self-taught people out there. I have friends I perform with who haven’t taken a single lesson or read a single book on guitar, they just learned to play by listening to others and fiddling away until they just learned to shred. Obviously to some extent they learned from those they listened to, but they didn’t have it explained to them anymore than you or I sitting down listening to an album all the way through.

Self taught just means that you didn't have a formal teacher, not that you didn't consume how-to books/videos. In fact, they probably account for the majority of self taught people.
