So what's the big deal with Tetris 99? I haven't seen so much as a commercial for it, yet so many memes.
@Proactive Citizenry ,99 people play each other at Tetris, while people slowly get eliminated. Leaving just one.
@Proactive Citizenry , It's battle royale but with tetris
@whataguy, so they aren’t affecting each other’s gameplay in any way though? It’s just 99 individual games of Tetris to see which one lasts the longest?
@Limerickrolled, I think there's still that penalty for combos, but I think it gets applied to a random person
@whataguy, ive gotten 3rd a ton. And I start having a break down at 10th most of the time.
@Limerickrolled, I think you can target people, and when you clear lines it gives them additional blocks underneath their existing pieces. A 'tetris' does extra
@Limerickrolled, you have a huge impact on other people's gameplay. Whenever you clear lines, you make garbage blocks appear in other people's screens, and you can control how the game targets other people to some degree. As you clear lines you also get badges that increase how devastating your line clears are, and when you're the direct cause of someone's elimination, you get all their badges. Tetrises, Combos, and T-Spins are particularly devastating moves, since there are modifiers attached to them that cause more rows of trash blocks to appear then typically would for that number of cleared lines.
@Marida Cruz, ok now that sounds muuuch better. Thanks
This is unironically true. Tetris takes years of practice to get good at. While they've only been out 2 months - 2 years.
@Captain Correction, Yes but a first person battle royale implements many similar skills to other shooters that have been out for years. This includes basic spacial reasoning, real time strategizing(I know games like Starcraft are much more intense in this regard), and obviously good very good, precise motor skills. You'll notice all of these things when watching someone less experienced or skilled than you play. They might aproach a fight in a disadvantageous way, and at this point you learn that they can't move and aim at the same time.
I understand that Tetris also requires good motor skills and fast adaptations to your strategy, but my problem with the battle royale is that there is not any further mind games. You can't try to trick anyone or go beyond the basics in any way because there is hardly any player interaction. When you clear enough lines, it sends a line to a RANDOM player. All you can do is play Tetris(really well, mind you) until all the other players lose.
@member berry, Its like playing homerun derby instead of baseball. Yes, it is really hard to hit homeruns consistently, but there is no interaction between the players in homerun derby. I think this fact takes away many skills that are needed for other battleroyales like making real-time strategies and playing mind games to gain an edge on the opponent.
@member berry, to each his own I guess.
@member berry, it’s not just a random player though, there is an element of strategy when choosing who to target. Do you target those targeting you to defend yourself? Do you target the guy who is winning to give you a better chance at the end? Do you target the guy who’s about to die so you get credit for knocking him out? Or do you target billy because he said he fukced your mom in voice chat...
