@PowerPickle, the problem is that when you create an arbitrary set of rules and enforce it with proclamations of divine instruction, you inevitably end up becoming an oppressor because the power imbalance is just too severe. Add onto that divine edicts being handed down by power hungry bigots, and you end up with a fiefdom, not a free society. At which point a lack of purpose is the least of your concerns.

@I Are Lebo, I'd say the set of rules are about as arbitrary as the advice you'd get from going to a psychologist. They are guidelines to live a fulfilling life, not meant to be oppressive, or at least thats how I see them. There are definitely power hungry bigots, but I'd say they fall into the "when not done correctly" category.

@PowerPickle, that’s not a fair comparison. When psychology comes to a bad conclusion, it’s eventually revised and corrected for. We learned that shock therapy is an inefficient procedure that causes more harm than it cures, so we discontinued it. Same with lobotomies, same with overdosing on pills, and some day (hopefully soon) the same with hormone replacement therapy. Whereas the religions persist with ignorant and bigoted practices for centuries. Look at how Catholics and Muslims treat gays and women. The mainstream religions are run by the bigots. They set the standard for what ‘done right’ means, and to dismiss them as false versions of the religion is to fall into the No True Scotsman fallacy. The fundamentalists actually have the stronger argument, too. The Bible really does condemn homosexuality and orders that women be treated as second class citizens. So does the Quran. The Quran really does claim that other religions only be tolerated if they submit to Islam.

@I Are Lebo, I suppose we just agree to disagree. The Bible I read contains a myriad of stories which offer insights and encouragment for how to tackle life's challenges. The church I go to preaches love your neighbor regardless of their lifestyle, be charitable, volunteer, and get involved to form a community. Religion isn't perfect, but I'd still argue my original statement stands true. When done correctly, it provides purpose and community (relationships). Its not the only way to get there, but if you are searching for those two things, may be worth a shot.
-
@PowerPickle, the problem that I’m pointing out is that ignoring the problems doesn’t make them go away. There are plenty of churches that preach living your neighbour, being charitable, volunteering, community involvement, as well as that gay people are an abomination and women don’t matter as much as men. Plenty of these churches hide their bigotry behind a veneer of compassion and virtue. Remember that these are the same organizations that protect child predator priests from prosecution. The same organizations committing tax fraud by closing their books to the public and running on tax exemption to avoid paying any dues back to the community. If you ignore the darkness in your organization because you don’t want to acknowledge the evil being perpetrated in the name of God, then you become complicit in it. For every story in the Bible that imparts a positive message (and there are quite a few of those) there’s another that promotes horror and supports immorality.

@I Are Lebo, I'll say again "when done correctly". Lumping all churches as being equally bad is just as closed minded as lumping all people of a race or gender as being the same. Because serial killers are most often white men doesnt make all white men murderers or bad people. The argument that some churches do bad things so all religion is bad is just flat out illogical to me, and so I really can't argue it. There are bad churches, yes. There are also plenty of good ones. There are bad atheists, there are also plenty of fantastic ones. If you are struggling with having purpose and finding meaningful relationships, finding a church to get involved with can certainly help. I'm not saying its the only possible solution or it has to be the solution for you, but its most definitely an option.

@Tentastic, dang Tantastic, you sound depressed as hell... what going on in your life that is keeping you down? Happiness has a different meaning for different people. What makes me happy will more than likely not make you happy. You have to search for it, live life at its best, enjoy the rainy days so you can rejoice on the sunny ones. If you see everything negatively and meaningless then you will never be happy no matter what you do.
-
@Tentastic, well, what is making you depressed? Is it your job? Your living situation? Your girl or the lack of one? Your family? Or even your own self? Everything never stays the same, things change. You have to be willing to help yourself and cut out what is making you depressed... seek happiness, we all deserve to be happy
-
@Mistyblue Ghost, while I may not suffer from depression, I want you to think about what you just said and put it in context for people who do suffer from depression. What you don't see is depression can't be cured by wishing you were happy or turning your life around. Depression isn't like wearing dimmed sunglasses and being a pessimist. People who suffer from depression have a chemical imbalance in their body that they can do very little about. It's like seeing the world for what it really is, like it's just been made clear to you nothing really has a purpose. So are you actually going to insult everyone who suffers from depression that theyre ungrateful little sh!ts and "put their big boy pants on and actually do the work"
-
@Tentastic, Wow, styalized paragraphs, you're a pretentious shyt on top of everything, condescending and assuming. What's next, you gonna sing a ballad about your feels? Gonna show us your flowchart of how everyone in your life made you such a laughable peacock? Whether you have depression or not, you have a far worse case of entitlement, telling people the root of depression is the inability to maintain your delusions about the real world. Buwahaha! 🤣

Set a long term goal you really want and when you’re down start working on that. For me that’s building the ultimate solar RV so I can go anywhere I want and it costs nothing but time(until I wanna move to the other hemisphere in which case I’ve priced out shipping myself to Europe I’m a container with it) When I’m in a bad mood I’ll look up a new aspect or price consideration for it and know how much I need to get it. This leads to a short term goal I can accomplish by saying oh that inverter system is exactly what I need. So I save the money for that in a week and I know I’m 1 step closer to my dream. Or just play with the pups. They’re goodbois and deserve to see the world

As someone who just got out of their appointment with their psychiatrist I can relate. Been on a variety of anti-depressant cocktails for over 25 years I can say this meme is fact. It's bad enough in trying to diagnose and treat depression without the fact that prescribing anti-depressants is a crapshoot. It takes a lot of trial and error to find what works, couple that with that most of the medications take weeks or months to see any benefits makes it even more disheartening.
For that we need a society based around community. Life will be soul crushing if you 1. Have no purpose. 2. Have no meaningful relationships.
