Quite frankly, I would say Minecraft has been one of, if not the single most important. It really doesn’t pander to any one group, and anyone can enjoy it. Not to mention the amazing things fans have done with it such as building in-game red stone computers, building entire cities, creating hundreds of thousands of mods, and making several mini games.
@Fuggles, so my better half has been building and building his city in Minecraft on a PS4. It’s mind blowing what one can do with mere blocks. He’s nuts; he built an entire city with skyscrapers, towns with residential homes, office buildings, gas stations, hospitals, police stations, a freaking stadium, an elementary/middle/high school, tennis courts, basketball courts, roadways, bridges, parks, a monorail system....I can go on and on. He even builds the interiors of the buildings. Walls and floors and rooms in entire skyscrapers! Every time he messes with it I like watching him; mesmerizing. And he built all of this on a PS4. No command line input to mass place blocks, copy/paste entire buildings like you can do with the PC version of Minecraft.. He built that whole thing block by block.
For Christ’s sake he even built the same exact building and color scheme of the building in Bob’s Burgers intro. From mere blocks! Who would have thunk?
@Fuggles, game theory actually did a video on the most influential games of the decade and gave good reasoning
@Fuggles, I agree, minecraft is basically free Lego in one mode, or a fun social RPG in the other. With plenty of difficulty options, it can be enjoyed by anyone, if they are open minded.
I think the haters are people who have very little ability in modelling in 3D space, or lack the imagination to build anything but a 6x6 mud house.
I hardly play anymore, but playing online with friends or 4 player split screen locally is great fun.
Getting the 'on a rail' achievement/trophy was fun as 4 of us mined the life out of the game to get enough iron to build the straight line track required.
@Fuggles, I think there is a solid argument for No Man’s Sky. The fallout from the runaway hype train and impact on both fans and developers is hard to ignore. There were significant legal reactions to it as well. It may not be as popular, open to creation (looking at you Pokemon Red and Blue in Minecraft) but the change in the gaming industry is there and in subtle ways.
@TheMightyImp, I'm not a minecraft fan simply because I lack patience :(
@Fuggles, I'm currently strip mining with quarries in order to get more copper so I can get the third nuclear reactor at my factory running and the fourth one built. Getting that much copper takes a lot of time. I'm probably going to end up making more quarries to devastate the landscape even faster. I love Minecraft.
I mean, if we're talking cultural significance I can see the argument, but I'd say there's stronger arguments for Skyrim (set new standards for RPGs), Minecraft (popularized creation mechanics over destructive ones, appealed to diverse audience, encouraged casual online play), and PUBG (codified this whole Battle Royale such and such in the first place).
@SimonPetrikov, i believe league of legends and overwatch are some of the most watched esports. Fortnite does have a lot of cultural significance to young folks that think it started the genre.
@SimonPetrikov, isn't fortnite a combination of Minecraft and PUBG anyway?
@SimonPetrikov, I’d say breath of the wild took rpg to the next level with its climbing alone
Game of the Decade. Skyrim. Everyone agrees it's amazing and it brought every kind of person together because the content, the voices, the story, were compelling.
@timofborg, hell, people still play it today because of mods and just replaying the good times
@timofborg, you forgot the music, everyone can appreciate a dope score
@timofborg, I’ve actually seen a lot of people complain about Skyrim. Many people found it to be an unsatisfactory addition to follow games like Oblivion and Morrowind
@timofborg, metacritic put out an article saying The Last of Us game of the decade
@timofborg, nah my man, witcher 3 is by far the game of the decade.Skyrim is only good because of the mods take those away and you have a mediocre game.
@Fuggles, So the problem is that it's part of Bethesda's simplifying their rpg's more and more. I personally don't have a problem with skyrim its my ideal action rpg especially since its the one I played first. To me itd the ideal RPG in terms of replayability. However I can understand an audience that feels like they are being alienated with everygame. However. Skyrims only problem to me has been Bethesda. I have never seen a company more willing to burn down all their good will just to make that extra buck. they somehow know how to make positive strides in the industry, like being one of the first if not the first to put user created mods into a console port, and then twisting the idea into something that just pisses everyone off like creation club.
I think thats where most of the skyrim hate comes from. the idea that Bethesda's good will is all gone with people wanting to find reasons to hate their games. especially after 76
@JoJoS, not true at all, I’ve sunk hundreds (probably close to a thousand) hours into Skyrim since I got it 2 years after its release. I have never even touched mods on that game. The things that are wrong with it are what makes it beautiful in my eyes. While I understand mods improve the quality of the experience I definitely wouldn’t say that Skyrim needs them. Skyrim will always be one of my all time favorite games
Fuuuuuuuuuuuck fortnight it wasn't even that important, if anything COD - GEARs -GOD OF WAR - HALO - MARVEL VS CAPCOM 3 these game are what made a huge community excited some sadness but a ton of happy moments
@DrSin, I honestly didnt like marvel vs capcom and I'm pretty sure it wasn't revolutionary or defining in any way. Which gears are you referring to? The newest one has a crap story mode and gears 2 had issues with glitches. They are great online but that's half the game basically also not defining. HALO I can mostly agree with up until 3 then it's not so great. COD is also not mediocre especially if you look at the individual games and not the overall series. I'm surprised you didnt put skyrim, minecraft, or borderlands even before most of those
I dislike Fortnite, but it’s one of the first large online games to integrate cross platform play (Xbox & Sony), along with the strong cultural themes they give away for free each month (movie/holiday themes). They may not be the first to do it, but they’re the most mainstream, and showed the markets that a free game can make a lot of money by loyal subscribers.
Smash bros is more fun
Decade..... there’s a shvt ton of amazing story driven games that have came out that are more important then fortnite
I think that title belongs to NieR Automata
@Elmato, hot android chicks with a heap of existential crisis.
You just went full retard. Never go full retard
I agree with this, it is one of the most IMPORTANT games as it will allow us to determine who to put in the WW3 concentration camps first
