Richard would often be shortened to “Rick”. It was common that nicknames would come from rhyming one’s name. Rick became D1ck. Same thing happened with Peggy which comes from Margaret. Magaret becomes Meg, which becomes Peg, which can become Peggy.
I looked this up along time ago... if I remember correctly, the people named Richard were typically A-holes or in this case, dicks. They also stigma of sharing a name with rather famous (and not well liked Richards. The nickname is basically calling him a dick.
@SeelenVerKaufer , well you got it wrong. Jesus Chrysler got it right. It came from rhyming Rick with Dick, a few hundred years ago. The pejorative association of dick with penis is only about 100 years old. There are old comic books from the 30s and 40s using dick in the sense of information (I'll give you the dick on that). It could also mean an average guy (every Tom, Dick and Harry) , or a type of hard cheese, or a slang term for nothing (he didn't get dick when gifts were passed out). Had nothing to do with calling someone a dick in the modern sense
Me: Oh hi Dick!
Richard: Uh. I prefer Richard, thanks.
Me: No, I heard you like Dick.
Gosh I miss hotline miami so much
