I'm having a tad if a problem ATM. I can't decide whether I should study japanese or Chinese - I like both languages, though I know a lot more about japanese (which is not much at all, but I have just today had the idea to study chinese) and like it a lot. But Chinese will be more useful, I'd say. Is anyone here that has studied one or both languages and knows which one is "better"?
@A pet named Steve, I study Japanese, I've never tried Chinese before but I've read about it. Personally I prefer Japanese but the languages are quite similar, a lot of Japanese was adapted from Chinese (I think please correct me if I'm wrong). If Chinese would be more useful for you then I would go for studying Chinese but if I was in your situation I would try to learn both due to the similarities I don't think it would be too hard to learn both at the same time.
@A pet named Steve, it really depends on what you plan to do with it. If it's just for fun and you're a Japanophile (like myself) then Japanese might be better. But if you're wanting to use it for business purposes then Chinese would be more appropriate. You can of course use Japanese for business as well but it won't have as many opportunities as Chinese. I've actually been considering something like this too because I'm hoping in the next few years to go to East Asia and teach English. My first choice is Japan but I've also heard there's a high demand for English teachers in China (and also Taiwan but to a much lesser extent there).
@GandalfVelociraptor, well, Japan adapted the Kanji, but have them (lots) of different meanings. I think that's where the similarities end, kinda. May I ask what job expectations you think you have with japanese? And thank you for your feedback by the way, I really appreciate that :)
@Sexy Homunculus, yes, I had similar ideas. Being a teacher would be very nice, but I don't think they need many German teachers. However, perhaps it is still possible to teach English for me, I think I'll check that out. Thank you for the feedback!
@A pet named Steve, I don't plan on any job within the Japanese industry actually I just really liked the culture and the language so I decided to try to learn it and hopefully visit Japan one day actually being able to speak the language, maybe even move there if I like it enough. It's alright I hope it helped a little bit and that you decide what to do soon :)
@GandalfVelociraptor, visiting Japan is one of my life dreams :D I want to see the cherry blossoms in Kyoto. The culture and the people are so interesting, and moving there would be amazing - though I have heard that it costs much. And yes, your feedback did help me! Arigatou gozaimasu :D
@A pet named Steve, It would be! My sister has a friend that is in Japan for a year for her university course and she's been helping me learn Japanese and has told me how amazing it is there. I hope you get to visit Japan soon! Ooohh that Japanese at the end there was a nice touch ;)
@A pet named Steve, I studied Chinese in high school for 3 years. It's definitely not easy to learn but it is the most common language in the world, so compared to Japanese you may find more use in learning Chinese than you would Japanese. A lot of character are based off of each other in both languages so that can be a bit confusing if you decide to learn both.
Al’s “FÚCK YEAH!!” was the best one lmao
“We should bring mom back” killed me.
