Draw 4 more weeks
Yeah it’s sad, like I was saying, money plays a factor in helping others. Being a landlord myself I let my tenants miss a month of rent. Lockdown or not peeps are still going out and the infections are still happening. I just don’t like how people are prioritizing the “economy” over health. News flash, money doesn’t mean anything when you are dead.
@Helecon, and life doesn’t mean anything to the suffering. There are things far worse than death
@Helecon, Almost all of us will get it eventually unless a vaccine is made soon. It's good to slow the spread so that we don't have more sick people than we can handle at once. After a certain amount of time (I think 4-6 weeks after the inflection point) quarentine will no longer be very beneficial. We are currently at a state that you are not significantly more likely to die due to a flood of other infected people. So since there's not much most people can do in the way of protecting themselves long-term, it's understandable that they would be concerned with how the economy will be influenced. And don't forget that a strong economy is coorrelated with fewer starving and homeless people.
Why are we so worried about the economy, is money more important than the risk???
@Helecon, the economy is a metric of how we live. If we all survive but then suffer loss of things that keep us alive after the fact from a destroyed economy then that's just as bad. Also remember when America's economy gets a cold, third world economies get the plague. The while world could suffer so much for possibly decades for the damage being done to our economy now. Good public policy understands this and proceeds with a balanced approach that tries to save lives now without destroying the economy now.
@sbcarp, I know, I know, I’m just tired of hearing about the economy like it’s more important than staying healthy or helping others. It’s just sad that we let something like money get in the way of helping others and making ourselves better.
@Helecon, as soon as it ends, the people who have had no way to work will be hit with months of unpaid rent. As soon as the ban on evictions is lifted, they'll be kicked out. Having an eviction on your record can make it incredibly hard to find decent housing. This whole situation is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" affair, where if you lift the lockdown people will die, but if you keep the lockdown, we'll have mass poverty and homelessness in a few months when everything's lifted.
@Rtas Vadum, Yeah it’s sad, like I was saying, money plays a factor in helping others. Being a landlord myself I let my tenants miss a month of rent. Lockdown or not peeps are still going out and the infections are still happening. I just don’t like how people are prioritizing the “economy” over health. News flash, money doesn’t mean anything when you are dead.
@Helecon, you're right, money doesn't mean anything if you're dead. But money also doesn't mean anything if the economy crashes and you can't buy food. We're starting to see damage now in the agriculture sector and mass meat shortages are likely on the horizon.
@ALargeRacoon, that's definitely true, but the damage to the agriculture industry is less due to the shutdown per se and more due to the plants that process meat trying to stay open this whole time and having the majority of their workforce get covid and be hospitalized virtually simultaneously. Still a big problem, but one that reopening doesn't necessarily fix
@danciestlobster, the majority in the meat plants around here aren't hospitalized. Once all the restaurants closed, the demand plummeted which makes the prices go way up.
@ALargeRacoon, unless I'm misinterpreting your statement, that's not how demand and price correlate. If demand drops, price decreases because of surplus, making the goods less valuable.
@FrankNStein, not with livestock. You paid to raise say 100 pigs, cows, chickens or whatever. If demand drops in this situation and you can only sell 20, you still had to pay to raise 100 animals. Now you still have 80 that you either have to keep paying for, or pay to dispose of. You might think, why not donate the 80? Well then there's a bunch of free product out there that cuts into what you can sell. Because of this, you have to raise the price to break even or mitigate loses. Alternatively, you can go out of business.
Nah ill riot if this goes into july. Im giving my state one more month but if we cant get it under control in that time period thenammount of deaths from keeping sh!t closed is probably gonna surpass the amount from people with covid
@CocoasBro, what state is that? Here in Knoxville, Tennessee they uplifted it. Restaurants only allowed at half capacity, gyms opened back up which I need. Salons and other businesses as such opening up may six. I was all up for the lockdown but this is too much. Our economy is going down the gutter... I just know it will spike up again and baaaaam! Another lockdown in order
@seeUpee, Wisconsin is still closed till the 27th of this month as of now i believe. Theyve already extended it though
@seeUpee, i dont know how much our economy can actrually take. I dont have the figures. Mayhaps we can go for around 6 months or more in this state without significant damage to it. Mayhaps we already broke it. I just dont know.
@CocoasBro, Wisconsin is a very suicidal state
@Noctobo, democratic governor.
@CocoasBro, The lock down may suck but it is necessary. The last true American pandemic by infectious disease was the spanish flu in 1918 that ravaged our country for 2 years. The government back then didn't take action until it was too late, and when they did it wasn't equally acted upon. My home state is Pennsylvania and in the middle of this outbreak we still let people go about their days. Hell we threw a parade in Philadelphia for returning troops from ww1. It turned the city into a plague zone. They didn't make a vaccine for it, and they really couldn't do much for you medically. The way they got that outbreak under control was with self quarantine. That's why we need to do this. It's the simplest way to get this under control. Just a reminder that outbreak had between a 3-5% mortality rate and ran through community's because of large populations and human contact. At that time the global population was about 1.8-1.9 billion. Current global population estimates are 7.8. Stay home
@NegativeLettuce, like ive said the disease may be deadly but skull fvcking the economy could proove even deadlier. Im willing to give the lockdown 2 months but a 3 months or more lockdown makes me think thats gonna be alot of damage to the economy. We cant just keep printing money.
@CocoasBro, We can't print more people either, economy's can wax and wane. People can't come back from the dead, having a strong economy is great but it's only really worth it and functional if there's people to engage in commerce with. No ones gonna trade with plague carriers no matter how much money they have. A large strong and healthy workforce is what drives an economy forward. I'd rather the workforce over liquid assets.
@NegativeLettuce, its easier to print people than to repair a devestated economy. Youre also ignoring what could be easily be more dead people from a broken economy.
@CocoasBro, We obviously disagree on our future course of action. I'll respect your opinion on the matter. I hope you and yours are safe in these times and continue acting safely no matter how the future progresses. Hopefully we'll all pull through this. Make good decisions everyone.
@CocoasBro, if you riot, that probably means crowds, which probably means you'll get infected, which you probably don't want because then your quarantine will be longer than everybody else's and you'll be sick.
@NegativeLettuce,i wish you the best to. Im just saying its a numbers game. People are gonna die regardless.
@Your Waifu, im a one man riot baby.
@CocoasBro, oh, well good luck not getting put in jail in that case.
@CocoasBro, dont be the joke
@Your Waifu, you underestimate my power.
@floppyspark, id rather be the joke than the butt of one.
@CocoasBro, Don't try it.
@Your Waifu, yaaaaear Ahhhrrr
@CocoasBro, yes please do that we need all the stupid to get sick again.
@NegativeLettuce, Well there’s a large projection of people that will be added to the “at risk of starvation” population if economies stay shut down (projected in the hundreds of millions by the UN) so sure the economy can bounce back eventually but it will be at the sacrifice of hundreds of millions. It’s really about finding a balance of how many die of covid and how many die of a closed economy. A large strong and healthy workforce is also dependent on a strong economy, which is why they’re called a “work” force
@seeUpee, @CocoasBro, the virus is going to be around for a while and many experts are saying that lockdowns will be the norm until a vaccine is developed (if at all). I realize none of this is ideal, especially economically, but its gotta happen so people dont die in the millions. Either way our economy and society is going to be changed after this. If everywhere starts opening up too fast too soon cases are gonna spike and lockdown will continue. Some countries like Italy and Spain and germany, New Zealand are able to slowly reopen with extreme cautious because they've flattened and reduced the curve. America has not and will not dur to pack of cohesive, national leadership and planning, as well as a society that puts public health before all else. If u really want to complain about the economy call your state representatives about how mismanaged the 2 trillion stimulus was made as well as how much money didnt go to small businesses.
Everybody stay safe. If your gonna protest wear a mask and distance when possible. Spread the love not the disease!
NJ here, I can't wait to get back to my minimum wage job (that I actually do genuinely love) at the arcade (8 On The Break in Dunellen NJ!). I miss getting to play free games with my boss (and his delicious home cooked meals every Friday) 😢
Can’t relate. We got restraints back so I’m going to have tacos and margaritas.
Governments paying me a lot of money to stay inside so ima just keep doing that
