ok so I just recently learned that a significant amount of people are flat-earthers, (just learned Shaq is among the members), just want to know if any people on here believe the earth is flat and why (genuinely curious; not judging as of now)
@Captain Penis, like I thought that ideology died along time ago but you can find hundreds of comments on youtube videos that say it's CGI and the videos recorded on the ISS are filmed in Hollywood as a big conspiracy
@Captain Penis, I saw that video trending on youtube also. I think I'll watch it now since you've sparked my interest
@Captain Penis, Bill Nye needs to put down some knowledge on these mu-fuggas
@Captain Penis, I'm f*cking judging.
@Captain Penis, Here's an interesting fact that I learned from a philosophy course: it's a myth that for the majority of history we thought the earth was flat. A simple sailor could tell you that the earth was round, not flat. When a boat approached an island with a mountain, the mountain would appear to emerge from the ground. That's impossible if the earth is flat, in which case it would just appear all at once. Thus, it was understood that the earth was round causing this effect.
@Captain Penis, you should be judging...
@dawg629, yeah I mean it seems so indisputably obvious but all the FE's are convinced they're sitting on a mountain of evidence
@TheHaxAreReal, yeah I'm judging
@Captain Penis, Aristotle was one of the firsts to argue for it being round. He pointed out the way that a sail would "sink" into the ocean as the boat sailed off.
@dawg629, but this does not imply the earth is spherical, simply rounded. Many people with this information still believed there was an edge of the world.
@So Unfortunate, No, that's a misconception. Spherical Earth was regarded as a given since 3rd century BC.
@UmActually, well, it seems like with social media, ignorance has a new place to gain its supporters. Morons.
@dawg629, also pi was determined thousands of years before
@I Are Lebo, Listen to the shaq audio of him saying the earth is flat. At first I thought "Okay he's f*cks around a lot so this might be a troll" then I completely 180'd and said to myself "Oh my God he's dead serious...This hall of famer is profoundly retarded"
@TheyCallMeTaterSalad, I think I'll take your word for it.
I gotta say, seriously, it is a source of depression for me how stupid the majority of us are. I always used to think it was just a line said by asshole or arrogant people. Lately I've begun to realize just how dumb most humans are. It's actually kind of upsetting.
@I Are Lebo, I think it's from sections of society refusing to believe certain facts about life and science. Facts about life, comedy, science, and reasoning have all been ignored and replacing them are arrogance, violence, and general stupidity.
@TheyCallMeTaterSalad, the biggest thing that gets me right now is the politics. Everyone is so focused on their opponents that most of the issues become secondary. The whole 'left and right' dichotomy distracts from every issue.
That's why you have non issues like gay marriage brought up over and over, while important things like infrastructure or prisons go relatively undiscussed.
It's why people continue to quibble over the rantings of Donald Trump. Why the heck are people still acting surprised by the latest thing that Donald Trump has said? His behaviour hasn't changed in two years, why is it still shocking people?!
@I Are Lebo, People want him out of office because their candidate didn't win and trump doesn't specifically want what they want. This election was a lot of my generation voting (I'm 19) and for the most part they are single minded and "me me me" attitude. Do I agree with everything trump offers? No religious and environmental issues I don't agree with. I'm not going Alex Jones on you but I truly believe the media is to blame for the divide in our country. I can't even simply discuss my ideas and opinions to people due to the overwhelming violence coming from the crazy subsection of the left. I can't show my tattoo off publicly because the insane subsection of the left and the equally insane subsection of the left. It's a Guy Fawkes mask with we the people under it. (and obviously have to the explain it's purely for the movie and it's message and not for the 12 year old script kiddies anonymous)
@TheyCallMeTaterSalad, of course the media is to blame. They have to fill a 24/7 news cycle. That means making a big deal out of anything and everything. The news stopped being about informing the public decades ago.
@I Are Lebo, I get my media from multiple sources strictly online now. The media's ruined the public perception of everything ever since they started blaming Manson and Eminem's music for violence in the country.
@I Are Lebo, And the worst of all it ruins comedy. I treasure comedy like no other and the loud minority is ruining it all for the silent majority.
@TheyCallMeTaterSalad, nah, man. Scapegoating things as the cause of violence is something that goes back millennia. It's basic human nature to find one source to blame for all your problems. That's not really what I'm talking about.
The real problem is us. The consumers who demand to be bombarded with constant input. Entertainment, gossip, even funny pictures. This is the age of the Internet, and we have completely lost scope of what is and isn't relevant.
I'm just as guilty of this.
@I Are Lebo, I'm not saying scapegoating in general I'm saying in today's massive reach of news outlets. And we all are guilty of it to a certain extent but it's all in how you use that information that matters. People are just consuming information and taking it at face value then move on to the next piece of information.
@Captain Mal, didn't he actually predict the circumference of the earth from that? And closely as well
@TheyCallMeTaterSalad, yeah. I have a similar but different take on conspiracy theorists. It's ironic that in this world the exact opposite of news outlets are paranoid conspiracists, but they're both opposite ends of a spectrum where mental health seems to be a narrow band in the middle.
Every conspiracy theory I have ever heard falls into one of two categories. Unreasonably complicated, or irrelevant. There's some crossover, as well. Historically speaking, people are awful at keeping secrets. "3 can keep a secret if 2 are dead". Other conspiracy theories would make no difference if they were true.
That's why people ranting about the illuminati make me laugh. If there somehow was a secret cabal that rules the world from behind the curtains, then it means they already won. Speaking out against such a group would be worse than useless. Either you don't have evidence, in which case everyone dismisses you as a crackpot, or you somehow obtain evidence, in which case you become a threat..
@I Are Lebo, and promptly suffer an 'accident'.
There's no point in worrying about something you can't fix.
That's the big reason why I avoid the news. The majority of it is shït that I can't do anything about and/or doesn't affect me in any way. In the most basic of terms, I don't need to know.
That's the problem with the Information Age. Everyone thinks they need to know everything about everything.
@Captain Penis, I'd just let it roll off dude. These days people choose to do or believe things that the rest of us sane people would deem as insane, for the sole purpose of getting attention.
@dawg629, people as a whole might not have believed it, but those who opposed that idea in philosophy were shunned and had to admit they lied.
@TheyCallMeTaterSalad, kinda irrelevant but it's spelt Guy Fawkes (like Dumbledore's phoenix- who is actually named after Guido). You probably know that already but Autocorrect doesn't like the name Fawkes :P
(For anyone who doesn't know, Guy Fawkes was a man involved with the Gunpowder Plot a heck of a long time ago- a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament with barrels of gunpowder. The conspirators got caught and executed, and now, every November 5th (when the Gunpowder Plot was meant to occur) we set off fireworks and burn effigies. There's some evidence which suggests that Guy and co. were actually framed by the government because they were Catholics and the country was Protestant at the time, so they wanted an excuse to persecute them. Anyways, the whole 'working against the government from the underground' thing is totally Anonymous's aesthetic so they've got Guy Fawkes masks.)
@Fantabulous Toaster, really? I thought Anonymous were all just big fans of V for Vendetta.
@I Are Lebo, (jk)
Did the bed just get a boner
Because if the earth is round we would fall off
@Hooman with a Pupper, alright sarcasm? or nah
@Hooman with a Pupper, *holds hands up* "Gravity"
