Old English was spoken by the Anglo-Saxons in the 5th-11th centuries, and Beowulf was written during this time. The photo is likely from one of the 11th century manuscripts that predates Modern English by about 500 years.
What you read was certainly a translation, not different than if you read The Three Musketeers in English.
Except that æ is pronounce with the ē sound
