That was too great a deal. Napoleon failed france here
@Dephenistrator, They needed the money, we wanted the land.
@Dephenistrator, it was a conscious decision, not a mistake. Napoleon needed funds and he needed it fast, so instead of selling land in north America to several countries or send out his own men to map it out he made an offer the U.S couldn't refuse and we gave him the money quickly. What most people dont know is that the original deal was only for part of the French territory, but napoleon said "give me an extra 2 million and you can have it all" and the U.S jumped at it.
@I Am Captain Obvious, i know all that, it was still definitely a mistake to fund a war he didn't need to do instead of investing in a massive annex of land. It was a mistake to consciously make that decision. There will probably never be a better bargain for territory in history because he was stupidly eager to be rid of it.
@Dephenistrator, napoleon looked at the big picture, and he wanted all of Europe to belong to France eventually, but keeping men and resources across the globe was too expensive, and nothing leaving it unattended would let the Spanish walk in and take it for free. You're right, he did fund an unnecessary war historically speaking, but he was a conqueror and a tactician who wanted would do anything for the betterment of France. He actually used the money from the Louisiana purchase to support governments of "liberated" countries, and he offered better than what they already had so he gained land and support without the cost of battle. War is complicated
@I Am Captain Obvious, napoleon failed his own people so bad they exiled him over his wars. I don't see him as smart or good for france. He was a train wreck most his career. Especially when he tried to invade Russia, you just don't do that during winter.
@Dephenistrator, we can agree on that, but remember he was a scapegoat and suffered more for that. He was too ambitious, he did a LOT of good, but ultimately failed and failed HARD
@Dephenistrator, hindsight is 20/20
US: "And we'll throw in some beaver for free!"
France: (rubbing hands) "Oh boy, sounds good!"
(France opens box, finds beaver pelts)
