All of it
Driving with your foot on the brake is bad for several reasons. One being your brake lights are always showing so no one knows when you're actually slowing down. The other being your brakes are always slightly applied so you're wearing them out faster. This has been a PSA from your resident DIY mechanic.
@The Lifeguard, I drive with both feet fairly often. Its a very important technique for racing. As long as you stay alert of how your feet are placed so you keep ur foot not pressed into the brake then your brake light will not be on and your brake will not be engaged at all to wear down the brake pads.
@The Lifeguard, it can also heat up and cause damage/warping in the rotors
Barefoot driving is not illegal either
@Kaji, depends where you are. Where I grew up it was (tho never really enforced)
@Kaji, it is in CT
@Kaji, illegal where I’m from!
@Diade, It's not in CA, only reason I know is years ago I got in argument with a friend who was adamant it was. She looked it up, and admitted it was not illegal.
@Kaji, yeah like I said, all depends. Lots of things are different state to state
@Diade, I did just do a quick google search, and mind you, just a quick one and was not heavily verified nor researched. But what I read was no state law, nor federal law states it is illegal to drive barefoot, there is however a law in Alabama, that specifically states it is illegal to ride a motorcycle barefoot, but it does not implicitly state driving a car. Though I have heard of cops ticketing for barefoot driving under the precedent that it is not safe, but without a direct law stating it is illegal, you could have that ticket thrown out.
@Diade, I suppose it would also depend on the cops too.
@Kaji, I've never heard of anyone actually being called out on it anyways (ticketed or even given a warning) so I suppose it doesn't matter that much anyway. I drive barefoot all the time since I have better control of the pressure when I'm barefoot compared to when I'm wearing certain shoes (heels or sandals)
@Diade, same, I love wearing flip flops, but I always kick off the right one when I have to drive with them to be more safe lol. Had it get stuck under the pedal once, got it loose before I accelerated too much.
@Kaji, flip flops are great, it's basically all I wear in summer. But that's kinda scary, I luckily never had anything like that happen when driving, I just noticed my foot is more likely to slip if I've got them on so I also kick them off when about to drive
@Kaji, Australia it is.
@hasher2288, did not know that.
@Kaji, as long as you have a clean floor in your car, barefoot driving is better
@Kaji, my daddy (basically a lifelong mechanic) always warned me of taking my shoes off & driving barefoot - reason being that if one of the shoes managed to slide behind the brake, i would not be able to stop when needed & then pretty much be unwillingly accelerating to my death.
So now I just throw my shoes at my passenger. They either knock out from the blow to the head or the smell. Either way I’m still alive.
Actually two foot driving (trail braking for rwd or left food braking for fwd cars) is very effective for being faster in a car... it's actually an important driving technique.
Not to mention, clutches? Are we not going to address using a manual with a clutch? Lol
@KillerdoomSky, blobeye sti guy here, I use two feet on all 3 pedals at once. Revmatch downshift trailbrake ftw
@FullMetalAlcoholist, right, forgot to mention revmatch downshifts but that factors into using the clutch. But a worthy note regardless
For all you guys driving manual cars out there, if you wanna have a good laugh, try braking with your left foot (on an empty parking lot just to be safe.) Your left foot is so programmed to always push hard that its quite funny to try braking smoothly with it.
@Trekytrek, learned to drive in a manual truck. I drove said truck everyday for 20 years. I bought a new truck and its an automatic. First trip out i slammed on the brakes everytime i tried to stop. Makes my chest hurt just thinkin about it.
Ashy Larry just had to sneak out for the World Series of dice
Barefoot driving is 100% legal, source: I'm a cop
I drive with both feet #ManualLife
@TheTrueCorreia, this comment is why I came to the comment section on this pic. #savethemanuals
Only retarda drive this way. Good way to hit the brakes and the gas at the same time.
I don't actually think it's illegal to drive with both feet. It's definitely not "correct" but I don't think it's illegal. Could be one of those things that vary by location, but I just remember that scene from breaking bad when Walt junior was learning to drive.
But I'm from Ontario and drive with one foot so I guess it doesn't apply.
Sorry for long random thoughts. Enjoy and stay safe my fellows.
@Nicol Bolas, take me with you
@superjulimaximo, sure, where you wanna go
What is ashy?
Only time where two foot driving is fine is when your on a track needing to keep your rpms high while slowing down a touch. Sabine Schmitz taught me that
Hey some of us have giant feet so when we try to drive with shoes on they get caught on things or you accidentally press both pedals in smaller cars
