@LtUncle, well shjt. Didn't think about the fact that the actual reflective part of the mirror is a bit behind where the document is expected to be so it reflects the light to a different spot on the mechanism and not into the lens for the CCD. I'd bet a polished metal mirror would have a better chance at acting like I described though.

@LtUncle, everything I see now is all glass mirrors and they're all smaller than the scanner bed. Though even a big enough mirror would still act the same as it directly reflects the light (instead of scattering it or absorbing it) but even further back so it lands even further away from the CCD. Easiest bet would be to try it with the shiny side of aluminum foil. Might try this in a bit and report back.
A big white page because it's just reflecting the bright white light back. And that light is through a consistent diffuser / consistent along the length of the bulb so there wouldn't even be any bright spots.
