These are Honeypot Ants! They're super cool and store a sweet sugary liquid through an organ called a replete. They then stay in certain areas of the nest and feed the other ants of the colony. Through ant keeping you can feed them food colored sugar water to change their replete color to things such as red and green!
@Catbug, i love these guys, i did a science project in 8th grade on them. At the 11th hour, my teacher knocked over my ant farm and it broke and all the ants escaped. I found out the next morning but i got an automatic A+
@Dephenistrator, That's awesome and disheartening at the same time! These are my favorite types of ants followed by Trapjaw Ants. I'm even considering making a more modern ant farm with Winter Ants because they also have repletes and are native in my area.
@Catbug, you've been waiting your whole life for this moment, haven't you?
@WhyNotBoth, Nope, I've done this pretty much anytime interesting insects appear on this app. One of the things I wanted to be was an entomologist, so I get excited when I see interesting insects on here. :)
@Catbug, I respect your hustle
@Catbug, OK Ants Canada
@Catbug, so when they feed the other ants does it like regurgitate the replete stuff? Or do they like drop off the sac and let the others eat it or what?
@Larsinites, They socially regurgitate it. Although they typically only feed from the repletes when food is hard to come by. Otherwise they typically forage like any other ant, with these ones hanging out just in case.
@Catbug, ah dope so it’s like a portable, living, emergency ration. Nice.
Wouldn't compare to her. This ant serves a purpose.
@ThePandaPool , that’s for sure
@ThePandaPool , Wouldn’t compare to her. This ant is sexy.
I heard this is how they make slurm
Is this a butt eating challenge?!
