Perhaps larger ships require forward momentum before vertical lift begins in order to help compensate for some of the weight by aiding the generation of lift with speed.
@Robin the Tactician, Except they don't, Acclimator-class assault cruisers are shown taking off vertically at the end of Attack of the Clones
@Robin the Tactician, all ships in the universe hold massive AGUs witch is why why they are destroyed the sips suddenly nosedive toward the GPO like a ship sinking
@InevitableFishmonger, yeah but acclimator-type cruisers are relatively small, maybe the vindicator-type star destroyers need the extra lift
@Kevin Dazed, or those monster cis vessels. Still though, a larger vessel could hold a larger AGU, up to a certain point, so I don't quite understand what forward momentum would gain them other than perhaps saving space and energy. All the ships likely have propulsion to propel them and stop them in space, so maybe using propulsion systems to take off instead of AG would be more efficient? Then again, they could still take off vertically via propulsion like a harrier jet, though with the extremely long ships that would be less than ideal
@InevitableFishmonger, They also don't have wings or anything even resembling and aerodynamic design.
@Robin the Tactician, or, it's a big strip of tarmac so lots of ships can take off at the same time? I'm not saying it's practical, but it would look awesome.
@Nellybert , they specifically call it a "landing strip", so I'm inclined to believe it's literally just a strip that ships land on in a row
@InevitableFishmonger, This is 2016, 'facts' have no place in an internet discussion. I demand that you withdraw your remark and replace it with a wild hypothesis that blames a US president and/or presidential candidate.
@Nellybert , oh my God, I just realized someone might think I was agreeing with you...on the internet! *ahem* Shut up you idiot you don't know what you're talking about!
@Tyrellious, the massive engines on the ship are mainly used for maximum forward momentum and hyperspace - other then that they use some form of AGU to operate this saves a lot on fuel and build/repair cost as it makes the amount of thrusters negligible.
@Nellybert , look awesome? yes! Cause massive fatalities? Hell yes!
@InevitableFishmonger, I will not! You can't silence me! Jet fuel can't melt Harambe!
@Robin the Tactician, "cause we're gonna ascend... kind of in a horizontal pattern at first. And then we're gonna go vertical, uh, as we get further out to sea." -Tulio "Road to El Dorado"
@Pythus, I see no downside here.
@Robin the Tactician, i love this app..
@T9x, funnypics: laughing and memes, having predicted from 47040, and discussing the physics of fictional spacecraft since like 2006 i think.
For emergency crash landing of course
@Killing instincts , that makes to much cents
This writer's strength is not imagery
@Ferrari Fireball, that's makes to much cents
@Pythus, too much?
@Pythus, cents? As in 100 of which make a dollar?
Hey guys, sorry to disturb your funnies, but just thought I'd like to announce I turned 18 today. Have a great day, and thanks for being an awesome community 👍🏻
@TheyCallMeNoName, happy birthday you have a good day and be awesome your self
@TheyCallMeNoName, happy birthday dude!
@TheyCallMeNoName, Happy B-Day!
Maybe it was a place to park several large ships together?
It's probably for crash landing since everything takes off vertically they'd have no space if something did need to crash and I probably have a designated space for ships crash
Don't think you know me
I don't know, HAVE you seen EVERY ship in the entire star wars universe? Do you live there? Have you spoken with george lucas? Did you make the movie? No? Then you'll never have an answer.
Hmm relatable only take off the dreamily... and what she's thinking...they'd probably I'd be thinking I'm a lonely piece of shjt
Because they don't land vertically they all land at an angle which requires the air strip.
No. Stop it.
But wasn't the invisible hand (grievous' ship" built in space, like star destroyers?
So there's room for ships to park?
