Just as an FYI for everyone. After a certain point in the shift, after cleaning the machine for the last time, McDonald's employees shut it off so that they don't have to stay late to clean it again. While the machines are poorly designed and break a lot, sometimes they just say it's broken so they don't have to stay at work late for unpaid overtime.
Source: my ex girlfriend worked at McDonalds for two years.
@I Are Lebo, I have friends who worked at McDonalds through sixth-form and I can confirm that the machine is a bastard to clean & they all hate doing it, so this is probably accurate
@I Are Lebo, my friend who worked at McDonald's said they stopped saying it's broken and told customers they turn it off after a certain time so it doesn't always break down. He said it worked a lot better than saying it's broken. A lot less angry people. They're still disappointed but at least not angry
@I Are Lebo, the McDonald's in my area turn the machines off at 2 am for maintenance
So I usually do my late night food runs at 1 am, which I just spent $16 on just for myself
@Abusive Breasts, mcdonalds near me closes it at 7pm-ish, along with the shake machine at arbys. It makes me a sad little fatty
@I Are Lebo, I used to work at chick fil A and spent unpaid overtime dealing with things like cleaning the machine and picking up the restaurant after events. Just seems like it's part of the job description
@I Are Lebo, I work there now. But I'm out back so I couldn't give a darn about that machine
@I Are Lebo, no one cares stfu.
@Torq Rinch, YOU'RE NOT MY SUPERVISOR!
@I Are Lebo, "wait, who is my supervisor?"
@GunLovingMerican, pretty sure that's Mallory. Or is it Pam?
@I Are Lebo, so let me get this straight, they want $15 an hour but lie because they're lazy? Sounds like fast food workers in a nutshell
@Sgtcookie15, not wanting to work an extra hour for free doing a pain in the ass task is not being lazy.
And they want $15 an hour because with rising costs of living, on $12 an hour they can't afford to feed themselves.
@I Are Lebo, maybe get a job that requires skill and they'd get paid more. They already refuse to do their job why should they be paid more? It's not the customers fault they don't feel like cleaning up, it's part of the job, don't like it get a different one.
@Sgtcookie15, what do you do for a living?
@I Are Lebo, currently I'm an entrepreneur with 3 business degrees. At one point I was homeless, I then worked two construction jobs 70+ hours a week and paid my way through school. Then I got a market research job while I fixed my credit and saved up. A year ago I quit my Job and started my own business, since then things have gone great but I still work 70+ hours a week. All I'm saying is if you want to improve your life it's completely up to you. I put in my fair share of free overtime and my hard work got noticed. I went from living in a shelter to having a house and a fantastic life. If I can do it anyone can.
@Sgtcookie15, your experience should afford you more empathy. Not everyone is capable of doing what you have done. Some people are quite frankly, not smart enough. Others have dependants and don't have the opportunity to just get another job, because they are risking losing their children if they rock the boat.
Unless you want nobody to work fast food, you cannot treat them like slave labor. It's one thing to say "their job isn't important so they shouldn't have rights", it's another to realize that attitude is what leads to the forming of unions.
Do you want to be able to have a burger that tastes good and is cheap within two minutes of getting to the store? Fast food employees are EVERY bit as deserving of respect as anyone else.
@I Are Lebo, actually I haven't eaten fast food in years, I could care less. I have no empathy because I have come from the bottom and clawed my way up, I know its possible it only takes effort. I supported three other people all while I did it. It takes sacrifice not excuse. I don't feel people deserve respect if they choose not to try to improve themselves. There are all sorts way you can get out of your situation, choosing to sit idlely by and blame people for your position is no way to do it.
@Sgtcookie15, nobody is sitting idly by. They are actively trying to improve their lives, and you and others are mocking them for it and fighting against it.
People like you are why the world is as shïtty as it is. Only your problems matter, and anyone else with issues is "lazy".
Your (seeming) complete lack of empathy for your fellow man is rather sickening. You pulled yourself to where you are, yet you show nothing but contempt for anyone you consider beneath you. Shame on you.
@I Are Lebo, I don't show contempt unless you don't do your part. Not fulfilling your job duty then complaing about pay us why I show contempt. No not everyone is trying to better themselves actually most people are not.
@Sgtcookie15, staying late for unpaid overtime is not part of their job and you showed contempt for them not willing to do that on a daily basis.
@I Are Lebo, if it's not time to clock out, you are not done with your job. If your not willing to put in the extra effort you don't deserve to be paid more.
@Sgtcookie15, if they don't clean the machines before the end of their shift, they have to stay past their time to clock out. If they don't shut off the machines after cleaning it last, they have to stay past the end of their shift as well. There are zero advantages to them staying late. It will not help advance them, and they aren't paid for that.
All of which is unrelated to the pay increase. With the rises in cost of living, you cannot survive off of $12 an hour. There is no point in a full time job that doesn't pay a living wage.
@Sgtcookie15, really truly, I'm not understanding why you are struggling with this concept. The ice cream machines at McDonald's are very poorly designed. They take a lot of time and effort to clean, and because of the inefficiency of this, it's done as few times as possible so as to maximize the amount of time serving customers.
You judge people in jobs you clearly don't care to understand, and that makes you an asshole. Please don't be an asshole if you can avoid it.
@I Are Lebo, it's their job, don't like it they can quit. As for a living wage once again get a real job and maybe you'll have a livable wage until then don't do a job designed for highschool dropouts and teenagers and complain. I don't care if it's advantageous to them it's their job, I don't pity people for not doing their job.
@Sgtcookie15, I'd understand that if that was the issue. It's not. You've completely sidetracked this discussion for no real reason other than to show your prejudices.
Fast food employee is a job with high demand and higher turnover, this is because the majority of people in the USA and Canada frequent fast food places on a regular basis. The turnover is because in general, both customers and managers treat the employees like CRAP.
They're overworked, they're verbally (and sometimes physically) abused by customers, and then self important assholes like you fight against them when they try to improve their situations.
As a culture we need fast food employees. Taking the stance that if they don't like their shït job they should quit is short sighted and quite frankly, stupid. There's a massive shortage in the job market right now. There are way too many people for way too few positions.
@I Are Lebo, we don't need fast food employees, we don't need fast food. The top 4 causes of death in the US are obesity related diseases which fast food is contributeing too. The mentally that we "need" fast food is exactly why our country is so unhealthy. There is a reason fast food employees are treated so poorly, it's an unskilled job that literally anyone can do. They aren't bettering themselves, they don't learn a skill or trade by working at Macdonalds and why should they be respected and treated better when they won't even fulfill the job position, because God forbid they have to clean the machines they're supposed to use for their job.
@Sgtcookie15, you're not listening and I'm done talking to the wall.
@I Are Lebo, you didn't listen either you just made excuses. Have fun defending your fast food ex girlfriend, I've got better things to worry about then someone who will never amount to something.
@Sgtcookie15, and that^ is what makes you a bad person
@I Are Lebo, do I seem like I care? While you whine about fast food Workers making 15 an hour I laugh and live the life I worked hard for.
I once worked at a Dairy Queen across from a McDonald's. I'm pretty sure they gave us like 50% more costumers for this reason.
I can't begin to explain how happy I am about Fake Taxi memes. It's like my two favorite things become one.
Name for research?
