From my general exposure to the genre, ive found all newer mecha anima to either trying to be Evangelion or Code Geass. Like they've realized those shows were popular, tried to copy the formula to achieve the same success, really had no idea what was truly great about the originals, missed the mark, made the gimmick mediocre, instead of coming up with an original idea. Investors and creators playing it safe by not trailblazing uncharted territory.
@Spork and Foon, you must be fun at parties
@Spork and Foon, YEAH! WHAT HE SAID!!!
@Spork and Foon, funny you should mention Code Geass, I'm actually watching it for the first. I'm in season 2 and so far I enjoy it but my friend was never able to get into it.
@Spork and Foon, Knights & Magic is pretty good.
@Spork and Foon, Gurren Lagann was a pretty great mecha anime that didn't try to copy either show. If anything it felt more like FLCL at first
@Spork and Foon, code geass is amazing. Shouldn’t even be compared to evangelion, it’s way out of its league.
@Sexy Homunculus, gurren lagann was amazing. By the end I found it to be utterly ridiculous with everything it was doing but I still loved the ridiculousness. Valvrave the liberator is also a really good one that I'm rewatching, giant robots piloted by space vampires
@GonMoose the Great, if you found a Gurren Lagann amazing, you should definitely check out Kill La Kill, if you haven’t already. They're both directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and written by Kazuki Nakashima
@Sexy Homunculus, ^
@GonMoose the Great, valvrave definitely has some major issues though. The space vampire thing is pretty neat I’ll grant you
@Spork and Foon, Some are for sure, definitely not all though
If someone would make a list of the anime pictured here that would be fantastic
@TomPholio, In order of appearance:
1) Armored Troop Votoms
2) Mobile Police Patlabor
3) Ideon space runaway
And of course,
6) Mobile Suit Gundam
@Irrelevance , you're a wonderful human being. Thank you
Evangelion is trash. It’s not even mecha it’s a terrible psychological drama more than it is a mecha. The characters are all human garbage and the ham fisted Christian iconography is completely meaningless.
@BearDaniels, Evangelion never claimed to be a mecha anime -_- it seems like you thought it was so it’s no surprise you came out of it disappointed. Evangelion is a deconstruction of the mecha anime. And just because you didn’t like it or didn’t understand it, doesn’t make it trash. There’s a reason why it defined a generation of anime fans and why it’s still so widely talked about over 20 years later
@iAMtheLegueOfShadows, people who like Evangelion are trash!
@BearDaniels, aww, can’t come up with a counter argument or a better insult, huh? No worries. I figured as much since you don’t understand Evangelion, or at the very least attempt to. Instead you just lash out like a child
No-one has said anything about Escaflowne =(
Gunbuster was fuggin crispy. Not nearly enough people talk about it anymore.
Is this one of those you can't hear pictures I keep hearing about
Evangelion was pretentious and overrated, with some of the ugliest mech designs out there. It's impact was simultaneously not as big as everyone acts like it was, and the impact it had wasn't necessarily good either.
Thanks. Now all I want to do is watch Big O
Also Gundam is so good. I've just finished the original.
@TomPholio, they are actually making a remake of the original right now called gundam origin. Fully remastered with modern animation and possibly a bit of rewrites.
