The key to everything. Moderation. Instead of eating 40%-70% of your diet in carbs, dropping it to the 20%-40% range means you're ingesting much more dense sources of protein and complex nutrient sources. Dropping to 0% carb intake will leave you struggling to stay energized throughout the day.
@ Tobias Widower, I did something called slow carb, only got carbohydrates from beans and legumes! Nothing white! Lost 100lbs. Highly recommend
@ Tobias Widower, eat more Spaghet
@celtics313131, good job! Hope your keeping it up
@celtics313131, Nothing white you say?
@YourProudFather, I went through a divorce and gained about half back! But I will lose it again soon I’m sure! Thx
@WelI Obviously, nothing white, only big black things!
I'm a month out of earning my masters degree and I've taken my fair share of nutrition courses. If you're interested, heres my two cents.
Keto is NOT bad for you, it's just not a sustainable diet for many people. If you're an athlete or a consistent lifter or a runner or whatever, you're probably going to hate life for the duration of the diet. Your body needs carbs. You need glucose when you're exercising (be it lifting or cardio or whatever). Keto is great for losing weight, but once you are at a desirable weight switch to a more sustainable diet. Your body will thank you.
Just keep in mind that the best diet in the entire world, for every single person regardless of who they are, is the one that they are able to consistently adhere to that gets them the results they want. Be it paleo, keto, fasting, vegan, etc., find what works for you and stick with it.
@BIessthefaII, Careful now! You are using logical reasoning and factual evidence! Cant have that now. Thats just crazy people talk, what with your fancy education and proven science. Just look at all the other comments on this thread! Clearly you are wrong because you actually looked up the science and facts to better support your argument and not your feelings, which is clearly the only viable way to go lol.
Yea, but in all seriousness, i 100% agree with you and wish you luck and success in all that you do.
Not sure a nutritionist has said keto is bad for you
@Sluggernot, probably means a dietician. You have to go to school for that.
@Sluggernot, my nutrition prof started out the carb unit by saying exactly that. She says it's not terrible short term but it's not a sustainable or healthy diet for the long term. She was one of the people that created Canada's food guide so I at least assume she know what she's talking about
@Sluggernot, Keto IS good for you... If you are either 1) A lazy pos who literally does nothing all day but cram food in their face hole and are 300lbs overweight and 2) For whatever reason simply have a very sedentary lifestyle. You work at a desk job and never exercise. If you fall into one of these two verh specific categories, then Keto may be the right diet for you. However, if you do any amount of physical activity then keto is actually dangerous for you and can make you very ill. Modern humans simply cannot sustain a active lifestyle without carbs. Sure, ancient humans probably could and did. But since the invention of agriculture, we have evolved to run almost exclusively off carbs as pur main energy source. Because its easier to digest and readily available in pretty much any developed nation.
TL,DR- No carbs can make you ill if you have even a minor active lifestyle.
@LaDarkProphet, I must be the outlier then, I am 5’11 and 160lbs, do karate classes 2 days a week, run 3+ miles 2 more days a week, and bike ride once a week and don’t experience any health issues as a result of the keto diet. The challenge is eating enough calories to maintain goal weight to avoid malnutrition. I was curious about where my cholesterol is at so I actually had some blood drawn today to check it. I’ll comment back when the results come in.
@Sir Borksalot , There are always going to be exceptions to every rule. Literally one of the first things that come on google when you type in Pros v Cons of Keto diet is the mention that professional athletes are told outright NOT to go on keto. And the fact that "keto flu" is an actual thing should tell you that keto probably isn't for everyone.
Now to be more nitpicky, you didn't say how intense your activities are nor what your overall caloric intake is. To me, if everything you do is low intensity, then all your physical activity is pretty doable. If however, your literally running those three miles as fast as possible, doing heavy sparring in karate and biking up and down hills then it would be more of an anomaly. Though personally, having done karate before, i wouldnt count that as a physical activity. Its a lot of standing around doing katas. Might as well do tai chi and work on your breathing for all the good karate is doing for you. (TBC)
@Sir Borksalot , Now, maybe your dojo is different and yall actually spar and actually move around. But otherwise? Karate is a lot of standing around doing nothing and i wouldnt even count it as physical activity. And it also depends on how strict you are with your keto. If yoh eat any starchy fruits or vegetables then you are getting carbs from your diet. Granted it would be a small amount but even a small amount is enough to maintain a active lifestyle. But hey, long as it works for you and happy and healthy who cares? You do what works for you and dont let no one tell ya differently! Stay active, stay healthy my dude! (I would recommend switching from karate to taekwondo though. Just personal taste)
Actually I lost 35lbs in six months and kept it off. Energy through the roof! Keto is amazing.
@Pubmarine Shamwich, Yea, if you live a sedentary lifestyle its great! You dont need that many carbs to begin with with such a lifestyle. But if you have a even remotely physical lifestyle then, no, keto is actually bad for you. Glad to hear its working for you though.
@LaDarkProphet, what you said isn't true. Every human being is different. I know plenty of REALLY physically active people who do keto and they are doing just fine. Don't be stupid.
@Butthurt Commenter, Smh. Yes, we all understand for every rule their is an exception. And your anecdotal evidence is really cute, truly it really is. But you see here kiddo, in the real world we rely on this thing called scientific consensus. And that means your, albeit adorable, anecdotal evidence mean's jack squat. Why do you think one of the first things that pop up when researching keto is warnings about the keto flu and why professional athletes should avoid keto?
It aint rocket science kiddo. Carbs are easier to turn into energy/fuel then fats and proteins. If you do a lot of physical activity, especially regularly, then more then likely ya need your carbs. And im curious how faithful to keto your convenient anecdotal friends really are. Cause starchy fruits and vegetables do contain some carbs in them. Do yourself a favor next time bud. Just do a quick google search of pro v con of whatever it is you want to talk about ok pumpkin? You run along now and have fun now ^-^
@LaDarkProphet, even if you're right, that's the wrong way to debate bro. Attack ideas not people.
@Lettrebag, Hey bro, if someone is going to like call me stupid without any supporting evidence or a logical argument then im gunna respond in kind ya know? Its like... If your going to call me stupid at least back it up with proper empirical evidence and sound reasoning. If you are just gunna call me dumb because of weak asf anecdotal evidence and no rationality at all, then ima respond without much respect. Course you didn't read that part. Where he called me stupid first right? Course you didn't. You just saw the long response, that while backed up with sound reasoning and logic, might have hurt his feelings.
@LaDarkProphet, even if. They're in the wrong for saying don't be stupid'- but you're equally wrong for discrediting yourself and validating it. Before you reply with another essay, yes I read your posts. It's hard to miss when you comment on every post in this thread. Both of your arguments are valid. But once you've stopped debating the topic and start sending personal attacks (yes he did it too, but yours was worse) it negates any sort of intellectual value being made since it comes off as childish "oh yea, well you're dumb" vibes.
@LaDarkProphet, lol you are butthurt. Also you aren't as smart as you think you are. Good luck with the whole being stupid problem.
@Butthurt Commenter, Whatever you say kiddo ^-^. My look at you. So adorable! The edgy profile name, the sheer lack of intellectual honesty, the cute way how you use ad hominems as your only argument! Just absolutely adorable. I bet you think you are so clever and wise, just a true genius who knows everything about everything dont you little buddy. Dawwwww i cant be mad at you. You are just so cute and adorable, with your little anecdotal evidence and circular reasoning. Absolutely precious.
@Lettrebag, I rest my case ^-^
@LaDarkProphet, lol bro you are so angry. Look it's alright to be wrong. You keep attacking me and then claim I'm using ad hominems? Alright homie. And you keep going on about how you are right about this because of scientific proof. I'm sorry to tell you bud but you're entire argument is ad hominems with NO SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH OR EVIDENCE. At least I am going off of a real world observation whereas all you have is calling me dumb. Good luck pal. I hope one day someone loves you.
@LaDarkProphet, also you're argument with lettrebag is weak af. It shows how childish you actually are. "He did it so I'm going to do it wahh". Bro grow up.
@Butthurt Commenter, Awwwww so cute! Look at you! Is it past your bed time little guy? Are you cranky? Do you need a nap sweety? So adorable! You go on and keep lieing to yourself ok pumpkin? You and your adorable delusions are most amusing to me ^-^ I greatly, even eagerly, look forward to your next salty response kiddo. It amuses me greatly. So cute!
@LaDarkProphet, lol you can stop attempting to talk down to me. It's not working for you and you just look silly. Anyways I'm still waiting to hear an actual argument from you but of course that won't happen. When I said don't be stupid I wasn't joking around. I was actually hoping you would be stupid but alas I am wrong.
@Butthurt Commenter, "I was actually hoping you would be stupid but alas i am wrong" Couldn't have said it better myself!!!!! 😂 Thank you for finally admitting it! Im so proud of you!
@LaDarkProphet, you're whole argument hinges on a typo that I made. Good luck in life homie.
@Butthurt Commenter, That wasnt a typo. That was a grammatical error, but you do you buddy boy. So cute! Just adorable ^-^ You really made my day ❤
@LaDarkProphet, by validating mine ;)
@Lettrebag, I never actually disagreed with you. I actually agreed with you on some points but its cool.
@LaDarkProphet, you validated my point that you're being condescending to others and spamming in this thread. Let it Go man
It isn't for everyone,and I don't look at it as a lifestyle, but I have lost 55 lbs doing keto, reintroduced carbs gradually so as not to rebound and now I just eat healthier and don't over eat as much and there was at no point where I felt unhealthy on keto, the diet for me was very successful (also added a 30 minute cardio workout to my daily life, which also helped a lot). I advocate for keto, but you need to do it right. Don't go guzzeling butter, cut carbs and think that's how it works, it takes work and dedication just like any other diet, this one however felt much more manageable to me (though not having bread was hard) and I lost the weight I wanted to, now post keto I live a healthier lifestyle and it has allowed me to keep it off and even continue to lose at a slower pace. I feel great with it.
But I'm gonna repeat and end on this note because it's the most important - if you're gonna do keto, do it right. Eat the right fats, exercise, learn to portion your meals better.
@Bear of Light, EXACTLY! I applaud you good sir. Keto is not for everyone. If you have even a moderate physical lifestyle, keto aint for you. Yes, if you live a primarily sedentary lifestyle then yes, keto CAN be beneficial if done right. It takes determination and discipline. Gotta take it low and slow. Good on you and im glad it worked out! Good luck on your fitness goals and i hope you continue to be happy and healthy!
Okay but nutritionists literally are nothing and the food pyramid has been long shown to not only be incorrect but as incorrect as it could possibly be. Like, the food pyramid is literally responsible for the Obesity crisis we have in America. So whoever made this tweet needs to sit down, shut up, and learn their place.
@Captain Swordsman, Citation needed.
And what they are saying about keto is not technically wrong. Keto IS bad for you IF you have a active physical lifestyle. If you are primarily sedentary and dont do much, i.e work an office job etc then, yea keto can be very beneficial. But if you are an active individual then keto is the worst diet for you. And the science why this is the case is really simple.
Carbs are our primary energy source. If you dont use a lot of energy per day then you dont really need that much food to begin with, let alone carbs. However, if you are even moderately physically active, then fats/proteins WILL NOT sustain you for long. You will get whats called Keto fatigue or Keto sickness. Its where your body basically shuts down to conserve energy because you no longer have your primary energy source. Fats and proteins are, by design, supposed to be your energy reserves. And a remotely moderate active lifestyle will deplete those rapidly. Hence the keto sickness.
I went from 315 to 250 in 6mo of hardcore keto. You can't convince me that a drop like that is bad for me.
I've lost 160lbs on keto and it's great. People dis it like it's terrible for you, but all you're doing is avoiding sugars, junk food, and eating meat, some dairy, vegetables, and some grains/legumes (like flax seed, nuts, chia, soy nuts etc) ... That's literally the food pyramid. How is avoiding white bread and cake "deadly" or "bad" for you?. Also, so many people think "ketoacidosis" is tied to Ketosis or the keto diet and it's not unless you're absolutely doing everything wrong and already have severe health problems
I did a keto/ fasting mix diet. Dropped 15 lbs in 3 weeks, easy.
But it’s such a burden to keep up with the keto that I’m now just maintaining with fasting p
My best friend was obese at 360lb, after a year and a half of doing keto he is at 180. All his bloodwork is perfect. Keto is great. Small minded people don’t want to accept the fact that fat is not a bad thing, because of what they were taught
@MyCatEinstein , that has nothing to do with it. Yea, keto CAN be a GOOD thing if you are massively overweight and live a very sedentary lifestyle. In that particular situation keto can be a literal lifesaver. But when you break it down, if you are massively overweight and do little to no physical exercise then you simply dont need a lot of food, especially carbs to begin with. That being said, if you are even moderately physically active then keto is, on average, not the right diet for you.
Sigh I’ll never lose weight
@megamanx181x, try keto. No joke. It works!
@megamanx181x, Do not just "try keto". If you are genuinely serious about losing weight then you NEED to talk to your primary care provider and ask them for help and advice. Dont just jump onto random bandwagons because people have a bunch of random anecdotal evidence. That is a good way to mess yourself up.
Remember, losing weight/getting healthy is not rocket science but it is a science. I highly recommend you see your primary care provider and a dietitian if you can before making any major life decisions.
There is no magic cure, no magic diet, no shortcut. If you want results then you need to figure what works for you.
But, because like everyone ima give you useless advice, i would recommend starting out with basic calisthenics/strength training and cardio while simply keeping an eye on your caloric intake. Cut out sugars like soda/energy drinks etc for water/natural juice. Start slowly. Dont just quit stuff cold turkey. That is the #1 reason why diets fail. (TBC)
Diets primarily "fail" because people will start their diet, see a tiny amount of gains and then think its ok to go right back to their previous lifestyle choices. OR the diet they pick sucks and they have to give up on all their favorite stuff which makes them depressed so they revert right back to where they started. Just look up what happens to your body if you just quit sugar and other tasty foods. Your brain will literally protest by making you unhappy or hungry for said thing. Its both amazing, because human anatomy and chemistry is fascinating, and sucky because at first your body/brain will literally fight you from getting healthy. Remember, we are animals. We are biologically programmed to store in as many calories as possible to avoid starvation. Working out/physical activity in general makes our body go, "WTF! Why are we doing this thing?! We need to be conserving energy!" If our bodies had their way, we would all be 500 lbs and do nothing but eat/sleep.
@LaDarkProphet, a lot of my problem I think is diet, I usually go to the gym 3-4 times a week over the past couple of years and I never gained more muscle or lost weight. I primarily did weights cause I feel more accomplished with it, I gained more strength but I wasn’t loosing the gut. After changing jobs I noticed changing my routine made it harder to get back into my rhythm. Last year I pulled tendons that never hurt before, my left elbow from curling, my left knee from squat presses on the machine, my right shoulder recently from the bench press machine. I’m getting discouraged that I can’t push myself anymore with weights cause these pains flare up. I’m trying cardio again but my knee flares a little and tenses up. I’m considering the dietician cause I don’t drink soda or eat sugar, I mainly drink water and I do my best with what I eat. Probably portion control is the problem but I just feel that it’s getting worst.
@megamanx181x, hmmmmm. I definitely recommend you talk to your doctor/dietitian. It sounds like there is a medical problem that is keeping you from the results you want. If you are physically active and eat a healthy diet and still wont lose weight or gain muscle mass then odds are high there is a underlying medical condition. And never push yourself if your hurting. A injury will put you back further then if you took the time to properly rest and heal up. Now, because i dont know what your routine is and a thousand other questions, i dont feel very comfortable recommending work out routines or advice. That being said i would recommend try maybe switching from weights to calisthenics and other low impact exercises like resistance training. At lest least until you are healed up and can talk to your doctor/dietitian about what the problem might be. And frankly it could just be genetics. (TBC)
Example, is i cannot get big biceps. Just cant do it. I can crush every dumbbell in the room for months and see no bicep growth. Im strong asf but for some reason the sweet swole remains ever out of my reach. I do get some killer shoulders though. And my forearms can get massive! Which looks weird asf. Big shoulders, massive forearms, tiny biceps lol
@LaDarkProphet, yea man I spent months not trying curls and I still feel it flaring it up, idk how much more time I need to heal and I think calisthenics might be the best thing for me.
@megamanx181x, Like i said. Talk to your doctor. Also, try looking into ice therapy. Most joint pain is inflammation from injury, and a lot of studies are showing how beneficial things like ice baths/showers can be when it comes to therapy. And also be sure to warm up and stretch before exercising. Should help reduce risk of injury.
@LaDarkProphet, you’re awesome, thanks man
@megamanx181x, No your awesome!
Two different employees of mine have tried this and I had to send them both home because of how unhealthy they were
Listen... You've been replying to EVERY POST on this thread. You've already made your point. I read your post, but even if you're right, being condescending is not a good way to debate with someone. It's equally easy to present your argument without making personal jabs at the other party and their character. They also in the wrong for saying 'dont be stupid' but you're equally at fault for validating it.
@Lettrebag, Was this supposed to be addressed to me? Should i assume it is?
Keto is literally the modern atkins
Ive been keto. It’s the only diet that has worked for me. I have will power to cut food, but have no desire to hit the gym. Running or some weights here and there. It’s worked, lowers my blood pressure, energy levels are better, it’s been a year. Once I got down to my current weight. I mixed in a cheat day here and there. No complaints.
I'm on the keto diet now with the modification of high protein. I lost 8kgs on 4 months. Went from size 33 waist to 30 and Lost majority of my stomach fat. Lost alot of fat but maintained my strength. Got tested 2 weeks ago and my stats are fine. Also didn't lose muscle mass cause I gym.
edit before keto. I saw a nutritionist and he even cut out the carbs from his diet plan to me
