Yeah, that's true, and it's sad, but it's no one's fault but the fans who make them popular.
@Rook, but what if firefighters watch basketball? Is it their fault?
@FredMercury, where do you think the money those players make comes from? There's a reason they make more than firefighters, and that reason is consumerism. If firefighting became a sport, they would make the same. It's just a fact of life. If someone watches sports, that's his/her own decision, and that's fine. But the sports world is a multimillion-dollar industry BECAUSE it has so many fans who are willing to dish out money for tickets and gear. So, yes.
@FredMercury, *their fault. Pardon me.
@FredMercury, if the firefighters are watching basketball, it is there fault. Capitalism. It's a fact of life, and it's the reason this country functions the way it does. Some people like it, some people don't, but it is what it is.
@Rook, I just think you should have worded it without using fault. It sounds very accusing.
@FredMercury, it's simply a cause and effect statement. People get very offended that service people make so little money and athletes make so much. But this is why, and oftentimes those very people are the same ones going to games and buying jerseys and fueling the fire. So while "fault" may sound accusatory, I would say it still applies. It's the hypocrisy of society.
@FredMercury, however, I apologize if I offended you.
@Rook, didn't offend me, I don't even watch basketball. I'm just bored and felt like being a prick. :D
@FredMercury, well, thank you kindly for the healthy exercise in defending my points of view... not that I need it now that finals are done with, but what the hell, you know?
@Rook, Every time I see this kind of thing, I've always planned on saying what you said. Never got a chance to though. Glad you managed to do it.
@Rook, fueling the fire. Kek
@Rook, it's a race to save the most lives! Firefighter 1 just saved a baby from a collapsing room! Well firefighter 2 ran into a blazing house to save a family of 4!
I think if civil service jobs were a sport it would be interesting to watch!
@Rook, I would totally watch firefighting as a sport.
@Rook, okay I honestly don't know exactly how all this works but I always thought that they should tax the revenue from sports and use it to fund careers like emergency services and doctors and whatever.
Sorry if there's a reason they can't do this that I don't know about but it seems like common sense.
The athletes could still be on an amazing wage considering it's a luxury job and the majority of the money could go to the people who make a significant difference
@Rook, well our Congressmen make 175k for a third of a year of meetings... so really it's the governments fault that service men are paid so little, considering they are federally paid.
@Ry Or Am I, I really don't see any reason why they shouldn't. Greed, I suppose. But I totally agree with you; I feel that would only be fitting.
@Hargrove2011, yes, it is.
@Rook, The thing about players compared to firefighters is the idea of supply and demand, firefighters can be found anywhere. While players are harder to come by, you are looking for the best player out of millions who will play in front of millions. They make so much because of the fact they have worked hard to achieve that type of money, being that the supply is so small but the demand is high. Firefighters are a normal supply with a normal demand. Long post but I just wanted to have my input :)
@Rook, the fans??? Wtf what about THE GOVERNMENT
@Deleted, the fans dictate what athletes make. And while the government SHOULD move to pay firemen and policemen more money, I'm not even coming close to getting on that soap box until they increase military pay and benefits.
@Rook, I think we should lower there salaries they don't deserve so much money $1-$5 million is still too much but I would start be lowering it to that
What if I save balls and play with lives?
@TheNightShifter, Then you're a testicular cancer surgeon, but you also play Sims on your free time?
@Imperfect Circle, i love you
@Tyrannasoreass Sex, maybe because he fixed your testicular cancer in your soreass.
@Tyrannasoreass Sex, Laying it on a little to think there Patrick
@fishlish, Gawd Dammit *thick
As a firefighter/emt, I can confirm, but it's not all about the money. It's about helping those in need in a time when no one else can. Not a better feeling out there than that.
@JustinMGWF, I agree but I'd much rather clean out a bloody ambulance making 10 dollars an hour over minimum wage.
@watchmaker, isn't 10 dollars minimum wage? That's what it is in Canada
I'm a volunteer I make $0 a year.
@Vladimir Putin, so is my brother. Shout out to all the volunteers in public service, you do good work.
@Vladimir Putin, I understand man. Volunteer for 15 years, 3rd generation. $0
I know a woman who makes 1 500$ a night playing with balls
The NBA is a business and pays it's employees, Taxpayers pay firefighters so if you want them to make millions too don't get mad about paying more tax
Honestly if I was a firefighter/police man/ whatever the hell. I wouldn't really be doing it for the money any way.
who the fvck downvotes something like this
It's a shame our service men and women don't make more money than pro athletes but that's capitalism and that's what makes this country great.
@Sneakerhead McGee, I'm in the Navy making $24,000 a year
@Soulless at birth, dont you get living expenses paid though? Or what is the reason behind $24,000?
@The Lone Guppy, No, I'm expected to pay for my apartment on my own
@Soulless at birth, thank you for your service. as I said you do deserve much more than that, but that doesn't mean pro athletes are undeserving of the salary they make.
Supply and Demand folks. Tons of firefighters, about 100 basketball players.
I run into buildings with known armed people inside and make very little. But I don't do it for the money. (Not gonna lie though, I'd love a raise... but who wouldn't?)
Has a single unique skill that only one in 30 million people has. There are 48,000 other people that can do it.
His shield on his helmet says 420
I def think firefighters deserve more n athletes deserve less but I think sometimes ppl forget. How hard too athletes really work day in day out to perfect there craft
As a firefighter I can confirm this is completely inaccurate. I make way less than $43,000
But come on guys, he's really good at it.
Someone else who doesn't understand how the economy works.
As a firefighter can honestly say that it's the easiest job in the world. I saved one life that didn't have crippling health problems after CPR and he was a heroin addict. He went on a week later to beating his girlfriend to death. Yeah, go fireman. Should have let him die
Only way to make firefighters more money would be to make fire fighting a spectator sport. Which would never work. Remember where the money comes from.
The only reason people like fire fighters don't get paid good money s because then people who don't care get the job
It is entertainment and that will always be a huge industry.
Out in San Francisco there are firemen who make six figures and they get crazy pensions.
A free market economy at its finest.
Well if we turn life saving jobs into spectator events then they would make that much. Sounds a bit grim though.
