This is actually a very common and interesting problem in ethics...the side with many people are all convicts that escaped prison, the single person is someone that has a spouse and three kids, and the train has 10 innocent people in it. Do you run over the convicts, the man, or derail the train? This should be interesting....
@unknownjanitor, since the convict is closest to you it would be easy for you to switch it to his rail and try to untie him before it hits him or die trying.
@unknownjanitor, rapists and murderers I sadly say let get rub over, if they're like petty criminals it's a lot harder. Like do you think you're life would be worth less of you robbed a bank to support your dirt poor family? Is that man with the family perfect? It's not easy, and it's always hard to say a good person should die to save more people. In any case the train shouldn't be derailed
@unknownjanitor, I've heard it many ways, actually. Usually I hear they're all strangers, but it's already set to go over the 5, so you could take action to save the 5 at the cost of the one, but then you're more directly responsible for the one, or you could just leave it as is, and not be directly responsible for anything, just be a witness.
@cowtipper2000, the spouse is close you you the convicts are on the other side
@unknownjanitor, let it hit the convicts and walk away as of you weren't there
@Ostrava of Boletaria, I'm pretty sure I believe in the concept of action through inaction.
@unknownjanitor, or simply 5 strangers, and one stranger. The five know you killed one person, or you'd kill five people just to save one
@Ostrava of Boletaria, I heard that it's five strangers on one track and 1 person you know(family member, spouse, etc)
@unknownjanitor, convicts, next question.
@Jonnasty, alright...next question: your driving on the side of a mountain going the speed limit (so nothing wrong at about 30 mph)....a semitruck starts to pass you on the other side, and out from behind the truck pops two motorcyles. Do you drive into and kill the cyclists, drive off the cliff killing yourself, or drive under the truck killing you and the truck driver?
@unknownjanitor, go in reverse
@unknownjanitor, i would kill the shjt out of those convicts.
It's funny cause it's manslaughter
@Jxk46, or woman slaughter you sexist pig
@Jxk46, what? Oh, never mind.
@Jxk46, you can't have slaughter without laughter
I've actually discussed social dilemmas like this with my girlfriend helps you figure out who they really are and what value they put on a life.
@Y0UR C0NSCIENCE, you are talking about taking a life...no matter what they have done...criminal or not they can still be good people. Messed up..sure.
Huh. That's true, you might actually be able to derail the tram and solve the dilemma...
Until you put ten people in the tram as well.
@Sebastian Pumpernickle, looks like in this particular illustration if you did that, you'd probably kill the people on both tracks and either kill or seriously harm the people in the train, so, depends I guess
If you have time to derail a train, then you have time to free the single person on the track.
"Yay thank you population control man!"
I actually did a research project on this just recently. About 90% of the people I asked chose to kill the four random strangers instead of the one family member.
Plot twist: the train was going the other direction
I just wouldn't touch it.. if it kills the 5 people it's not your bad, if you switch it to kill that one guy that's your fault and you gotta live with that.
@Captain Canine, But you choose to not act, making inaction an action. This means that you chose to let 5 people die.
@Commandshark, I'm ok with that
@Captain Canine, But it would still be on your conscience. Your action would be inaction instead of pulling the lever. You'd be sentencing the 5 to death instead of 1
What's the train from? I've ben wondering for a while.
@3d2y, ive seen it before too..i havent read many mangas so im thinking it is from an anime, fooly cooly cant be ruled out.
Failed attempt to save everyone or a mass murderer problem solving?
@Dephenistrator, this is Funnypics. Definitely mass murderer.
