@megamanx181x, right into the ground.
The way voting is set up causes a natural 2 party system. Only way to fix it is to fix voting
He’d be cool if we had a 10 party system because he understood throwing people into 2 camps will lead to conflict but if there’s a ton of options people won’t get super tribal about their politics.
“Two Party” - we’ve been getting the System* ever since.
@Cave Dweller, I mean, two party isn't that bad. In Belgium they haven't had a government in 600 days because there are so many parties who can't agree on what to do next. Also if pre-WW2 germany didn't have 20 parties maybe they could've united against Hitler's rising influense. But on the other hand, with one party in power the head of the party becomes the head of the country, which is how Stalin had no compitition when Lenin died(that and Stalin gave his friends jobs around him to give him more power) and I don't want a government united against their citizens like Maduro Venezuela, Ayatollah Iran, DPRK North Korea, CCP China, or INGSOC Oceania in Orwell's 1984.
@Chula Charlie, all communist and puppet regimes (including INGSOC). Even Lenin established the “dictatorship of the proletariat” with little more than the support of (ironically) the elite at the expense of the “bourgeoisie.” Not the same with democratically elected governments— esp. USA. Despotic consolidation of power has proven difficult despite the “Two Party System” and not because of it (See GW Farewell Speech).
A compelling conversation that deserves much more attention than this place can provide.
Thank you for the actually intelligent comment.
@Cave Dweller, @Chula Charlie, you two are gentlemen and scholars. (Tips hat)
I mean isn't forming a separate party literally how America happened?
@AJalo72, not really. There was a ton of disagreement on what America should be. We had everyone from pirates to pacifists sign the declaration. The only thing they agreed was that the dirty tea drinkers should get fvcked
@BigJohnson86, sounds like there was a common agenda among various groups of people who believes in one thing. (Besides it was meant as a joke to begin with)
@BigJohnson86, and then a bunch if other people who joined those tea drinkers.
Annnd then a bunch of other people who just wanted to live their lives. Sure they didn't want so much taxation, but they weren't about to go to blows about it with the strongest nation.
I mean... I like it this way. We are a very big country with a lot of different opinions
@seeUpee, the problem is that two parties isn't enough to represent those opinions. Ideally you'd vote for a candidate whose personal viewpoints most closely match your own, but if the lead candidates don't match up with some of your personally important points, you're basically boned.
@Rtas Vadum, yeah that’s also retarded though when someone wins because it wouldn’t be majority at that point
@Richard Cypher, oh boy, is this the part where I launch off into a deep rabbit hole about how the problem isn't even necessarily two parties, it's actually first-past-the-post voting, and how we'dbe better off with ranked choice or single transferable vote?
@Richard Cypher, are you talking about how someone can win the election through the electoral college even if they lose the initial vote?
@Rtas Vadum, Maine is actually doing ranked voting this year and I think NYC also passed a vote to start using it for local campaigns, so there is Hope for next cycle
@Your Waifu, no I’m talking about the people who say the final vote shouldn’t be between 2 candidates and should have several
@Richard Cypher, yeah, I can see how that's a problem as well.
