People hating on Shang Chi? That’s a paddlin..
@jauntboys, I liked it, people who can't read, or people that don't know Chinese... May have a hard time with it.
@Mag3rPayne, why do you need to know chinese?
@dafaqisthis, lots of subtitles, so if you know English AND Chinese verbally but cannot read... I know it's a very exclusive or nonexistent circumstance.
The "laughing at the guys who said the movie would bomb" one was way funnier
@Mantis Tobaggan, I mean, its budget is reportedly in the neighborhood of 150-175 million. It's current box office revenue on box office mojo is 308 million. With advertising and stuff most movies need to make double the budget to make a profit. So depending on the actual budget it's right around breaking even. Maybe a loss or a little profit. For a Marvel movie that's a major drop off. Black Widow made some 377 million and was released on D+. Shang Chi just had theaters so it should have had some better performance because of that and it didn't. 300m isn't chump change, but for a Marvel movie breaking even, I'd call it a bomb.
@spongeblade, it's been out 3 weeks and broke even, so it will only make more money. That isn't a bomb at all. I doubt Marvel will consider it a bomb because they most likely take fewer people going to movies because of the pandemic into account. It's not gonna hit a billion or anything but it's no bomb
@Mantis Tobaggan, they're going to likely make a little money, but not much. Even taking the pandemic into account breaking even or barely making profit is not a success. In the general sense for movies I'd agree it's not a bomb. But for a company that's been routinely making a billion a movie for a decade that's certainly a flop.
When Solo did a similar thing Disney flat out canceled the other movies they had planned because they deemed it such a big failure. Pandemic or no, this is closer to that than a successful movie.
@spongeblade, people also boycotted solo. Because the Star Wars before that wasn’t original. Iron man 1 made about 500 mill on a budget of 140 mill, so 3 weeks and making 300 mill is pretty good. But Shang chi is going to be most likely renewed. The industry is looking for more diversity to hit more targets. My client is an elderly Asian guy and he has never watched a marvel movie. But bam Asian super hero form marvel. He went and saw it.
@spongeblade, the movie has done well enough for marvel that they’ve decided that all future movie releases will debut in theaters first, and not on streaming platforms at the same time. I think that has to indicate that they are happy with the money it made so far in the theater.
@Glenchi, they're not doing theater releases because of how well Black Widow did, quite the opposite...... Black Widow did very badly for Marvel. They said it was because it was released on D+ at the same time. So they decided to go back to only theaters to increase the box office revenue. That doesn't appear to have worked. I'm glad your friend enjoyed the movie, but idgaf about "diversity". Having an Asian movie with Asians because there's an interesting story to tell? Heck yeah sign me up! Having an Asian movie to hit "diversity quotas" and you can just f off (not saying you're doing that). That's a large part why Solo got a lot of backlash. They made star wars about identity politics vs a good story.
@spongeblade, you aren't wrong about the billion dollar comment, but you have to remember that is worldwide. One of the biggest markets for films (maybe second biggest, I'm not positive) is China, and Chang Chi hasn't been released there. So that's another huge amount of box office revenue the movie isn't getting.
@spongeblade, well it's also not playing in China due to a number of the actors having spoke put in the past about the CCP. The reason Hollywood bends over for China is that's the biggest market share. So without that Market 300mil+ is good.
I don’t even know who this guy is. And honestly, I don’t give a flying uncensored fuсk.
@Child Slapper, how?
@butternut squash, well, I imagine he’s the Actor from the Asian Marvel movie. But Disney is like the King Midas of cucks so I just avoid anything they touch.
@Child Slapper, I mean I get the hatred of Disney but to deprive oneself of the mcu seems cruel and inhumane
@Child Slapper, how did you do that??
How are y’all not burnt out on superheroes by now… after Endgame I refused to watch another movie about a grown man in a cape for at least 10 years
@Sappy Poop Stain, I'm a sheep for everything superhero lol also just think the mcu has done a great job at staying unique and writing complex and meaningful Long-term storylines
@EVILdrPORKCHOP3, bro how are you even talking with the MCUs dick that far in your throat?
@Captain Rumble, I spot the guy not worth talking to!
@EVILdrPORKCHOP3, then why did you talk to me?
Jung saved cinema?
@USMC83, I just started Kim’s Convenience…it’s hilarious.
