Can the Americans here explain black history month to me? Seems counter intuitive to try and break down racial barriers by highlighting them constantly
@theprofprofessor, I mean...literally there is no way to explain it other than what you just said. It’s pretty stupid.
@theprofprofessor, it's from the 1930s I think. black history 'week' was a presidential attempt to stop hate crime back when it was really bad.
now that 99% of Americans don't actually care about melanin content, it remains a vestige because it would be unsavory to remove it.
obviously social media takes a huge bonus from victimizing low income black people, but the majority of adults see through it. maybe 99% is a bit high...
@theprofprofessor, as an American I can't tell you why we do it. I don't even agree with it. I agree with you 100% in statement.
@theprofprofessor, "well, you're just saying that because you're white and since all white people are racists, that means that whatever you say doesn't have value, therefore you must be banned from this app for promoting hate!"
I think that's a pretty decent representation of SJW rambling in regards to race. The grammar is a little better than the real thing, but the insanity is still there.
@fuddruckers, I can tell you why. It's because of this magical thing called "indoctrination".
@Doctor Krieger, Must be fired and publicly demonised*
@theprofprofessor, we have it in Canada, too. I think my response is appropriate: I ignore it altogether. I pay absolutely no mind to Black History Month because it’s ridiculous. It’s basically saying that black people’s suffering matters more than that of other demographics. I mean, while I’m a firm believer that comparing or competing levels of suffering is a phenomenal waste of time, I’d still say that the Native Americans have had it harder than the blacks. I’ve never heard of Native American History Month.
If black people want to organize groups to deal with actual inequality they face today, I’m all in favour of that. But black history month as it is typically ‘celebrated’ is little more than a reaffirmation of white guilt.
As a Jewish second generation Canadian emigrated from Eastern Europe, white guilt holds no sway over me.
@I Are Lebo, but Lebo, Black Lives Matter (more)!
Also, Jews are just pointy-nosed whites to the race baiters. Honestly. I see it every single day, being a Jew or being a gay male is towards the bottom of the Progressive Stack nowadays.
@sploot, your admission that 99% was high, is when I realized I agreed 100% with you
@theprofprofessor, so, to your first comment, it performs a real service to our community and culture. An eye opening thing for me is when my teacher, who grew up in the southern USA said that the war I knew as “the civil war” was taught to him as “the war of northern aggression”. It showed the truth of “winners write history”. You asses that this month is counterproductive. You are correct. It maintains a divide between people that say they want to be a melting pot. The thing is... it’s not a melting pot. It’s a tossed salad. Carrots can work really well with lettuce and make a great combo, but carrots and lettuce don’t melt into one another. The purpose of this month is to give kids who, through the fault of very few people still alive, don’t see role models that look like them. That can be important. I hope the history books will be filled with the accomplishments of a diverse group of people soon and we can stop singling out the peppers from the onions. Let’s just eat salad.
@Canis Arktos, is this an innuendo for rimjobs
@theprofprofessor, its a stupid thing that delegates black history to a month. Its American history. And American history isnt delegated to a month. Nor is Jewish history, Native American, etc. Its important history to be sure, but shouldnt be put into just a month.
@Doctor Krieger, it’s not the progressives that feel that way, it’s the regressives. The regressives think they’re part of the progressive movement and that the regressive term is just a slur for progressives. It’s not. These ideologues see everything in terms of race and it’s a massive step backwards for equality, something they claim to be fighting for, but are actually in the way of.
@I Are Lebo, no, no, that's literally what they call it. "The Progressive Stack". It's basically the victim hierarchy, where the higher your race, sex, sexuality, etc. is on it, the more valuable your opinion is considered.
@Doctor Krieger, yes that’s what they call it. They call it that because they think they’re Progressives.
@Doctor Krieger, the ‘liberals’ who are in open favour of language policing and who so frequently tear people down for wrong-think are not liberals, they are authoritarians. Identifying as a member of a political leaning while displaying attitudes antithetical to that group does not change what that group stands for.
@I Are Lebo, I can agree that they're not liberals by the original definition, but neither are you.
@Doctor Krieger, no I am not. I am neither left wing nor right wing. I am not a Republican or a Democrat. I could probably be labeled a progressive, but only by the original definition. I refuse to shift with the tides, and I think this labelling mentality directly interferes with dealing with the actual issues.
I take every issue as it’s own issue, and I fail to see why more people don’t do that.
@I Are Lebo, I label myself an AnCap not to make clear my political positions, but rather to make clear the principles that I approach each issue using.
@Doctor Krieger, I’m unfamiliar with that word
@theprofprofessor, the bigger hypocrisy is women's equal rights. What better way to promote equality by demanding special treatment, and this goes on year round
@I Are Lebo, Anarcho-Capitalist. I want to abolish the state in favor of voluntary transactions in a free market, as per the Principle of Self-Ownership and the Non-Aggression Principle.
@Doctor Krieger, I disagree with this notion, based on the simple, recorded fact that many fields operate more poorly when subjected to a profit incentive. Some examples of this are medicine, prisons, and education. When these fields are led by people motivated not by results but by profits, society suffers.
@theprofprofessor, watch Morgan Freeman's interview about it, he pretty much sums it all up
@I Are Lebo, props for referencing “wrong-think”.
@Emma Stoner , in general, I advise against watching actors do interviews on political topics. The unfortunate truth is that the vast majority of actors have no fücking idea what they’re talking about, but have been fooled by the widespread belief that popularity equals competence.
@theprofprofessor, I'm an American. Love my country..."merica" yada yada yada...but you couldn't have phrased it better. Everyone who isn't a white male wants "equality" but they actually want "notice me notice me I'm special". It's all garbage.
@theprofprofessor, it’s meant to educate us on the history of blacks in America. It is, in theory, actually incredibly important to many kids who don’t understand the past or who don’t see black people (for example my high school had 4 black kids out of 2700 students) - in practice it’s a useless time of exploring new racist jokes and creating barriers between whites and blacks
It also is used to highlight heroic black people from history that would otherwise never be mentioned in school
@Emma Stoner , That interview was my introduction to the concept of black history month
@I Are Lebo, that last sentence.. you are the whitest guy ever and I'm pretty damn pale
@Medic135, what, about the actors?
@theprofprofessor, all I can tell you is if white guilt went away and if white people which 99% had nothing to do with slavery, collectively just said eat a dićk.. our country would be a lot better.
@I Are Lebo, whoops, your first comment last sentence
@Medic135, lol. I just love the double standard of “how dare you judge me based on the colour of my skin” and “your skin is pale, therefore you share the blame for slavery.”
It’s like, where is the logic, there? I should feel bad for the actions of other people?! Why?
@theprofprofessor, saying black is an amelaninophobic microaggression, Sharon. You are a bigot.
@I Are Lebo, In Canada it is with our first nations (aboriginal) people and it is absolute indoctrination by the dictionary definition. They are essentially wanting to move forward by moving 10 steps backwards in race relations.
@theprofprofessor, the thing I only recently learned is that black history month isn’t “honor the fact in black” month but more a month to acknowledge people who took large steps to help bring black people to equal rights, such as Martin Luther King Jr.
@Exotic Chaos, a noble ideal, but not one that necessitates the dedication of a whole month.
I’m trying to comprehend how a coin toss is dishonorable? Any of our black funny pics users wana help me out? Is it because black people don’t have coins to flip?
@toolazy, I’m pretty sure you’re thinking about the Mexicans on that last bit
@The 48th Ronin, now now, we shouldn't make fun of the Mexicans just because they don't have any money
@WelI Obviously, oh my bad. Should we make fun of them because they’re brown instead?
@The 48th Ronin, as a Mexican allow me to say: que?
I’m gonna wear a pointy ghost costume to black panther on Friday
@MLG Farmville, might want to wear a bulletproof vest too
@MLG Farmville, just be careful to not "spook" anyone
@Sexy Homunculus, But they never said they were muslOH you said BULLET PROOF vest...
@WelI Obviously, I’ll bring a cross so they know I’m a calm religious man
@MLG Farmville, you could light it on fire too, just so everyone can see it ya know
@MLG Farmville, I'll bring the rope.
"Don't worry the vest will protect you"
*gets shot in the arm*
"But it's also a vest"
@Sexy Homunculus, don't tell him that, just let natural selection do it's thing!
How does one “dishonorably” toss a coin? Like... fling it from the butt cheeks of a hooker while your kids watch?
The most powerful yet overused card in the deck. Must be played in combination with the "inner guilt" card or "shamelessness" card.
@Mhael, they’ve activated my trap card! I play I Won’t Be Held Accountable For The Past Actions Of Other People Just Because I Share A Physical Trait With Them!
Or IWBHAFAOPJBISPTWT for short. Easy to remember.
The lady he lost to won Americas first ever medal in the luge which I thought was a little more impressive cause the Europeans had that locked down for a while.
I see this meme was made by an American. A lot of Americans seem to forgot America is just one country in the world and not the world as a whole. Since racial issues like this where playing the race card is a common term in America but racial issues are completely different or non existent in other countries.
@Seohn, Non-existent in other countries you say? This is going to be just a single example, but those white farmers being dragged out of their homes and murdered for being white would have a lot to say to you.
@TerryColdfire, I see you skipped the part where I said racial issues are different in some countries. And only read the part where I mentioned they are non existent in some countries too.
@Seohn, I didn’t skip it. In my opinion it was not worth mentioning since racial issues boil down to one thing. Race. Granted people in ‘more free’ parts of the world can play the race card you mention is so prevalent in the US and are simply killed for being another color or just for believing differently in other countries, it doesn’t change the fact that racial issues still involve race. If that was not the point you were making I’m sorry I didn’t understand it. And I’m sorry for not bringing up your first point. America is not the rest of the world, and you’re right, and yes an American very most likely made this meme, but it can still be funny to laugh at despite it being so petty. I hope this clears things up a bit on my end.
@TerryColdfire, the point was don’t treat the racial issues in America like its the same everywhere. Thats why I said. A lot of Americans forget we are just one country in a much larger world. Where issues can be completely different in different countries. Since this was a meme involving the olympics. Playing the American race card may mean nothing but whining in a country where the olympics are taking place that don’t have those same racial issues.
And yes anything can be funny. For example. I laugh at people who forget America is just one place in a much larger world.
@Seohn, I see your point. That is certainly true that Americans have a tendency to forget that we are all a part of something bigger. Doesn’t help we have a rather high number of those here in America that refuse to use higher brain functions. Anyway. Good talk, fellow funny pics user.
@theprofprofessor, it’s so black people can feel better about and celebrate their history and so white people can virtue signal.
How is a coin toss dishonorable?
