This is what always gets me with SJW/super progressives.
Non-white playing white role? OMG so brave, so amazing, so progressive.
White playing non-white role? OMG white washing, fire them, never give them a role again.
It's the same thing with this Apu crap, they're selectively outraged because it fits an agenda.
If anything, they themselves are being racist through their hypocrisy.
@Mhael, they want to feel superior through self righteousness. They'll judge anybody if it makes them look better.
@Mhael, just so you know that the driving force behind this is a man who’s heritage is Indian and grew up with the things Apu did being thrown at him as insults. Just throwing some background out on the guy who made the big push who got the issue to where it is.
@Megahut, you forgot to mention that guy getting pissy is also supposedly a comedian. Comedians are suppose to dish it and take it; if you cant do both then you probably arent funny
@Megahut, and? Having a reason for being a whiny, pretentious cunt doesn’t make you not one.
The guy saw something racially insensitive that applied to him and chose to make a fuss about it while simultaneously ignoring the multitude of racially insensitive things that don’t apply to him. It’s hypocrisy of the same sort as the voice actor for Chef on South Park quitting because they made fun of Scientology while not caring about them ripping on Jews, gays, blacks, trans, mental illness, etc.
It’s a joke, and those who can’t take jokes aimed at their group but are fine with any other topic being joked about are intolerant hypocrites whose opinions aren’t worth the time of day.
@Mhael, CULTURE APPROPRIATION!!! (Which btw is the dumbest argument I’ve ever heard)
@ptitty1231, I wouldn’t disagree with you
@I Are Lebo, I wouldn’t argue against you
@ptitty1231, he admits that the jokes are funny but pretending they arent also derogatory and mildly offensive is immature. The comedian wants apu's character to change or evolve to make him less of a stereotype. Imagine the outrage if the character was an African American stereotype. There would be no question as to its need to change as culture does too
@Mhael, I think that "non-white" people playing white characters, which I feel are few and far between, is much different than a white actor playing a traditionally non white role because in terms of "equity" it takes jobs away from non-white actors where their roles are limited and no at least proportionate to the population in America at least. I see it as people, who I have no idea what struggles they have endured solely because of the color of their skin, telling me, a fellow citizen, that they experience a different reality than me because of something they could not control.
@ManBear, like, we all think racism is bad, but our education what racism is, is not consistent, therefore it seems that we disagree more than we actually do
@ManBear, first off "I feel" is not really a good statistic to go off from and form an opinion based on. What are the actual numbers?
Second and most important, if the problem is that roles are unequal, attempting to solve the issue at casting is just treating the symptom and not the issue itself, and only serves to upset fans of the true characters of the show. The issue is with writing, not casting. You should try to have writers write more diverse characters, not simply morph or take over existing ones.
@ManBear, equity is a doctrine that fails at every level. It places outcome as a higher importance than opportunity, and it takes agency away from people.
It’s also shallow, and often racist/sexist, because it fist looks at people from the point of view of their immutable characteristics. On top of that, it fails to account for any of the reasons for inequality, instead labeling it as discrimination without actually bothering to find out whether that’s the case.
People who support equality doctrines think that it makes them virtuous but it makes them shallow and unempathetic. It’s also unrealistic, and above all, unfair.
If you want an equal representation of racial identities in film, you are ignoring the racial profile of actors. In the western world, the vast majority of aspiring actors are white because the majority of citizens are white. If you make it easier for a ‘person of colour’ to get a job at the expense of making it harder for a white person to get a job, you’re not
solving the problem, you are just shifting the burden.
Before the demographics of a particular position can be determined to be the result of discrimination (which I agree is best opposed), the demographics of the people applying to the position need to be known.
Equity is harmful to society. Equality is important, but diversity for the sake of diversity is not a virtuous thing, it is a discriminatory thing.
As a Mexican i never found the Simpsons offensive ever, they played the typical Mexican stereotypes with bumble bee man and many other Latin American cultures and they are funny cause it’s true. The difference being the show is a satire, something that newer generations can’t and won’t understand. If this whiny ass comedian was offended by Apu then why not stand up for all the other ethnicities and nationalities the Simpsons made fun of?
@megamanx181x, because those don’t affect him and therefore he doesn’t care about them. These people are fundamentally weak, and can’t take criticism or jokes at their expense without seeing it as a personal attack.
@I Are Lebo, exactly! And he was made fun of once at a comedy show being called apu and he took it as if that’s the only thing in American pop culture he can be compared to and found it unfair. I call even more bs because the Simpsons made fun of everyone equally and most critically apu was actually one of the more “rational” characters in that show. Why doesn’t he mention the positive stuff like apu getting married? Showing of the Hindu culture? Him and his wife managing their seven twins? I think those were wholesome stories that gave apu more character then being a typical convenience store owner
@megamanx181x, I didn't know they sold confidence at a store. Maybe NOW I can finally get that self-confidence my mother always spoke of.
@Ze Grammar Nazi, sorry they are all sold out.... maybe take a rain check?
@megamanx181x, Dont forget my man Apu was Chief of the volunteer fire department and had a PhD
@megamanx181x, Because Mexico as a nation can handle a funny joke. Warner Bros. Showed Speedy Gonzalez once and felt it was insensitive to Mexicans and stopped using him. Many complaints came in afterwards (majority Mexican ethnicity) about the lack of the mouse character. So Warner Bros. brought the happy little amigo back to tv.
My family always used to watch Simpsons while we ate together. So we've talked about this a few times. Do you have an idea how many Italian characters are in this show. Fat Tony, fat Tony's goons, Luigi from the restaurant and a few more I can't remember exactly. So many stereotypes about us. And we find them all hilarious. Everyone get sht in this show so it's fair to have everyone shown. To keep out apu would be removing the diversity from the show
For really, Hotdiggidydemon did a 40minute long rant on why this is stupid and it is enlightening (funny crude humor animator, definitely worth the YouTube watch)
@TwitchingJacob, it seriously closes the book on apu and many other "stereotype" characters. Racist SJWs need to stop with their racism.
Apu was probably the most altruistic character on the show. He was a vegetarian, devoted to his religion, owned a business, was a supportive father, had a garden on his roof, knew paul McCartney. Sjws can eat my shorts.
The nation isn’t outraged. Idiots are outraged
There are two villages in Scotland who are both claiming that they are the birthplace of Willie.
Oh come on people, it's just a show. I bet there are tons of shows that don't accurately depict white people, too, but you don't see me in a fuss about it. If I don't like it, I don't watch it. People are allowed to be creative however they want. I don't need to like it. I don't base how I see people based on stereotypes in a TV SHOW. I, like most people, base my opinion of someone when I talk with them and get to know them. A tv show isn't going to influence that.
It's not the Nation. There are people who are angry with this...but they DO NOT represent the whole nation. I'm so fvcking tired of the straw man on from both sides of the political spectrum. It makes me sad to see generalizing like this in my Funnypics.
...I know it's a joke, but posts like this are becoming to frequent
Oh look, three groups of people being mocked, and none of them are raising a stink... wonder why?
Plus, the guy protesting Apu is a comedian who started his career by making jokes about his own father, all the while speaking in the stereotypical Indian accent. F*cking hypocrite.
Yo, go on YouTube and look up Brain Dump Apu. An original animator makes a 45 minute ANIMATED video about why people are totally wrong about Apu. It’s full of passion and amazing points by a actual fan of the show instead of these... whiny progressives who haven’t watched a single episode.
It has nothing to do with racial stereotypes, Apu is actually a very nice depiction of Indian people if you actually watch the show
Max “Hotdiggedydemon” Gilardi made an excellent video on YouTube thoroughly disassembling the argument. I highly recommend checking it out.
Those aren't races.
@Jdrawer, and? Racial =\= racist.
@big freedom, Why don't you utilize your big freedoms and pick up a dictionary?
@Jdrawer, wow. The dumbest comment of the day award goes to... JDRAWER!!!! Congratulations that’s really quite an accomplishment
@big freedom, Yeah, it was pretty dumb, but at least I know "racial" is derived from "race."
@Jdrawer, wow. So you discovered the root word, but you’re still too stupid to understand that “racial” is not equal to “racist”.
Keep trying champ. You’ll get there someday.
@big freedom, I never said it was racist or anything of the sort.
@Jdrawer, Yes. Jesus dolt. The pic was making fun of people being upset about Simpson’s making fun of Apu, an Indian, but being ok with making fun of Southerners, Italians, and Scots. You said that those aren’t races. Simpson’s make fun of cultures. Not races.
AND, just because something involves race i.e “racial” that does not automatically make it “racist”
@big freedom, Exactly. I'm not making any sort of social statement. I'm simply making a pedantic statement.
