Those things are actually incredibly strong. There was a durability test on tv once where they drove one at 70mph into a concrete barrier, and the drivers and passengers compartments were untouched, while the front collapsed on itself.
@AbandonedCashew, only problem with them the crumple zones are so small a lot of the impact is transfered to the driver. Saw a Tahoo rearend one on the freeway a few months ago. Person in the Tahoo was fine, person in the smart car was in an aid car. No not with the car....
