You are irreplaceable
While I think this is great, I wish they would have also brought back Jeremy irons for the voice of scar. In my opinion his performance was just as memorable, and it’s hard to envision scar having any other voice...
@musky pooter, I wish they would stop remaking disney movies and not putting pretty much any original disney movie actors in there so they can make an all black cast. I.e Lion King, Aladdin, and Princess and the Frog
@tmo0792, I agree, I don’t think the recast is necessary. I guess they are doing it because the movie is set in Africa? I’ll probably still watch it though just to see how it compares to the original...
@musky pooter, yeah but for example they are casting will smith as genie in Aladdin when they have Ben castellaneta who literally plays genie in the second movie and in the kingdom hearts games like will smith will not make a good genie.
@tmo0792, I agree. I think that there are certain characters that are very much characterized by their voice actors. To have such a drastic change is kind of jarring.
@tmo0792, to be fair, they’re live action remakes, the actors kind of have to fit the ethnicity. As for the Lion King, I think all the recasting choices are really good, besides Seth Rogen and Beyonce.
If they keep everything down to keeping every single voice actor the same, the movie will be absolutely pointless to remake. Granted, there isnt much reason to remake it in the first place, but it’s at least nice to hear new takes on the characters as a bonus. Like Donald Glover, Eric Andre John Oliver, and John Kani are gonna be great in their roles.
@tmo0792, I see where you're coming from, but I think Will Smith has the potential to be a good genie. Granted, the only other genie who comes close to Robin is James Monroe Igleheart, but I don't think we should hold Will to their standards simply because his acting and comedic style isn't like that. The whole point of the genie is that it allows the actor free reign for improvisation. I'm going into it expecting something completely different than other genie's, since I think that's what Will will do.
@tmo0792, yeah cause why would they want a big name like Will Smith instead of the guy who did the second movie 24 years ago? And yes I know Castellaneta isn’t a nobody
@musky pooter, I’ve said the same thing. Jeremy Irons as Scar is more iconic than JEJ as Mufasa, in my opinion. Prolly just went with James because his health is in worse shape, and they got a pretty good chance of him croaking before he hits another project. Jeremy, on the other hand, is out here, fit as a fvcking fiddle, going nowhere but up as one of the only enjoyable characters in DC’s universe.
@tmo0792, why do they even need to do that? Just use the original voice lines and add new animations.
@musky pooter, I completely agree
@K1l, while I would normally agree with this, you could also argue that all the characters are animals and therefore racial appropriation shouldn’t be a thing. And although it’s set in Africa, the story is basically a retelling of Hamlet.
@Page 394, I get your point, but the classic genie voice is what I’m used to, so it will be hard to appropriate someone else’s take. I realize that it may be my fault since I grew up with a certain version of that character.
@musky pooter, man, I get you. It took so long for me to accept that anyone besides Robin could be the genie. Even then, it's hard to not compare. Nostalgia is both a powerful money source and a dangerous game.
It's an animated movie though...
@NotCaveJohnson, I just call it hyper realistic, instead of live action.
Voice of darth vader also
That's a valid point. Thanks dude.
Unpopular opinion: if you’re going to be rebooting/ remaking a film, you should change up the actors.
I dont always support film reboots, especially when the original was great. But if you’re gonna do it, make it feel like an actual reboot.
I would say it’s analogous to when a movie recasts an actor in a sequel. Like it’s annoying to have to picture the new actor’s face as the old actor’s character. So this is basically the same thing to me: you’re expecting me to get on board with a new retelling of the lion king, but it’s going to sound the same as the first one.
@MrTsquared, I’m just really bummed that they didn’t keep Rowan Atkinson as Zazu.
Am I the only one who enjoyed the remakes so far, and is really looking forward to this one? Granted, they’re not as good as the originals, but I like them so far. My only complaint is that there are so many coming out at once. They should spread them out more.
Ok that's enough of the whole live action debate. This movie is live action because the term "live action" in cinematography refers not only to the method, but also to the style of the film. This film is very high on the visual realism scale. It's meant to look as live action as possible. The style of the film is live action, even if it is mostly cgi.
Just use the original soundtrack and replace the video
All sources indicate they are probably going to remake the same exact story. They probably could have just reused his voice from the first one. Hell, maybe they did!
I bet he didn’t see that coming
