So... bear with me in this one... this is progress. Many people have heard the story about the two guys, one in a car accident and one wins the lottery. Same day. 1-10 how happy are you. It’s exactly what you predict. Lottery winner is a 10 and accident is like a 3 or something. The trick is that a 1-5 years later the same guy asks them 1-10, how happy are you (same day for each) and they both say... “you know, maybe a 6-7”. And that’s humanity. Given time we’ll get used to just about anything. That influencer who just got a bad review is as upset as the person who lost their job. An outsider doesn’t get that but they feel about the same. This is only the 15th worst thing you’ve experienced. You are at 15th worst level of sad for your life.
That’s why I’m generally pretty chill with babies crying. I’ve been surly when being woken up from a nap. But imagine the wonder of having the best nap you’ve ever had, the nap that defines what a nap COULD be, and someone wakes you. I’d cry too
@Canis Arktos, so uh..youre saying that...our quality of life is equal to those living in the dark ages? Or that of those living through the black plague and the holocaust?
@Canis Arktos, I stopped reading when you said there was a bear with you and I got scared
@MMSieBreeze, I guess it depends on how you define quality. On one hand, we live such comfortable lives that we can afford to complain about nuisances of phrase. On the other hand, we were probably going to complain about the same amount no matter what time we were born.
That we have acclimated to this time and these experiences means we would likely be miserable if we went back.... for a while. Then we’d acclimate and have good and bad days just like we do now. It’s not the events I’m discussing but the way we experience and interact with the events.
@Canis Arktos, my brother described this as “pain is pain, it doesn’t matter what kind of pain it is, we all feel it the same.”
@theduuuude, the worst pain you've ever had is still the worst "you" had. Doesn't matter what it compares to others. It's still your worst
@Canis Arktos, dude... Excellent explanation of a concept of thought about for many years. Kudos, and I hope you don't mind if I borrow parts of it at times
@TheBigJ, the comment of the week goes to you my friend!
@Canis Arktos, there's a term I learned in sociology that is defined as what you described about people getting used to their situation. I think its called normalization, but I could be wrong
@Canis Arktos, also, easy times make weak people, which make hard times.
Sure it’s progress, but not all progress is good.
@big freedom, to that I say yes... but also no. We do adapt to our experiences and if our experiences are not difficult, we are poorly adapted to meet difficulty. However, by eating full meals on a regular basis, our children have grown to larger, stronger adults more capable of fighting off enemies or illness. Our technology has improved which allows us to deal with problems in new ways (which sometimes adapts is in further away from being able to face difficulties in the old ways).
I am buoyed by the readings of news articles and the like who rebuked the youth prior to WWI as being lazy, unskilled, and pampered. Yet when the time came, they were capable of performing in the war they were called to. (At this time I won’t discuss that it sucks how a war is how much of history judges that “they weren’t pampered sissy’s after all”)
@Canis Arktos, we’ll see. I hope you’re right, but there is a huge difference between that generation and the ones coming up now. We have made them intentionally soft and weak. Not everyone, but a much larger percentage than ever before.
I’m offended that you are offended
@megamanx181x, please remove this comment, I find it offensive
@StupidPotatoes, ugh, cancel culture is so offensive
Men before: war
Men now: gey
Amerika wat happen?
@ReverseGiraffe, sword fighting is a more honorable form of combat than with guns
@ReverseGiraffe, idk homosexuality used to be prized in the Roman empire. And the army used be a total gay club back in the day. Guess people are upsetti that we get to just exist for once?
So in 2520 child labor will be legalized again?
@The Pun Shielder, well if you take into account how fast kids today are “maturing” sure why not...
@The Pun Shielder, the weakness of today’s youth (mental fortitude) almost guarantees that we have very bad times ahead of us.
@big freedom, agreed
@big freedom, I find your willingness to state facts and form reasonable opinions about them offensive, that’s something a Nazi would do. You must be Nazi!
@The Pun Shielder, why wait so long? They’re already doing it in China, heck, they even reinstated slavery! Apparently they even have some pockets of the Black Death festering.
OFFended? That’s offensive to ONfended people
K den boomer
Southern White guy noticing black guy drinking out of a White's only fountain in the 30s begs to differ.
