There’s this big thing going on about Native American artifacts being in American museums. The tribes are saying that the artifacts were stolen from them which is...how museums work
@FunnyBecauseFWord, well, there’s this idea of museums being caretakers and that’s all fine and well. We didn’t steal dinosaur bones. We didn’t steal the Mona Lisa. These things were found/ donated/ etc.
The tricky part is when I walk into your grandparents house, take their bed, put it in my guest room and show pics on Pinterest of my great find. But don’t worry, I’m just a caretaker. Also, no you can’t have it back. Im taking better care of it than you would have. Honestly, you would have been sleeping on it every night.... you eat in bed don’t you. Let’s just say this be will never have bedbugs now that it’s in my house. Also, again, no you can’t have it back.
@Canis Arktos, exactly. Coming from someone that’s worked in various museums, there’s a very blurry line between robbing and conserving. Like when is it considered archaeology and not grave robbing? Is it ethical to preserve pieces of history that the people those pieces belong to don’t want them there. The natives are angry because the pieces they want back are from the Ghost Dance culture, and some were even taken off of dead bodies at Wounded Knee. But then you go into the legislative aspect, where a new law was passed that private museums must give up certain artifacts if requested. Which then becomes a legal issue of whether one is being stolen from, the other is being stolen from etc etc. it’s a very interesting subject to say the least and I shouldn’t have dumbed it down so much lol
@FunnyBecauseFWord, this is funny pics. You did fine. Should you go before a congressional board I suggest a different speech though.
@Canis Arktos, would probably not try to be a ha ha funny man in that case
@FunnyBecauseFWord, plus, and I say this being slightly uncomfortable with the imperfection of the words I’m using and the ways these words may be misconstrued or misused, how many generations back is it appropriate to apologize for? I can trace my lineage to Richard the Lion heart. Do I owe the Middle East money for the crusades? I have an ancestor (18 generations back) who is Native American. Do I owe some tribe money for something *cough* my(?) nation did to another? Do I owe myself more money than I am entitled because I only have that one ancestry so far back? How about the conquest of Alexander the Great? Where do we draw the line? Bad things happened. Slavery was awful and the effects of that are beyond obvious even today. Still, where is the line? Should there be just one line?
@FunnyBecauseFWord, i mean if you find it lying in the ground is it really stolen?
@BlazingBowman, I mean... if you just killed the owner then.... kinda. I mean somehow the rules of war are different... I think... sometimes? I mean most wars are fights over resources so in those instances war IS theft. It is such a big theft though that it isn’t theft anymore. It’s war.
(I’m not even sure I’m arguing with anyone other than myself at this point. Feel free to read the musings and procrastinations of a man who should be writing a very different paper right now.)
So, if you kill enough people... nope that’s a bad road to go down, also slavery killed people but slowly and was, by most definitions, not war or, at the very least, actions following a war. Also, slavery was a theft of (human) resources. Kinda supports the earlier comment.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that (help me out here) “if she weighs as much as a duck....”
@FunnyBecauseFWord, yeah, but they were stolen fair and square.
I’ve been there. It’s a pretty awesome museum
And not only former colonies.
I was in London in 2018 and I walked around the British museum and this is all I could think about hahaha
It’s amazing how many former British colonies have amazing relationships with the UK.
Some of them, like Hong Kong and Jamaica, have had considerable chunks of their population want to return to British rule.
Others of them, like the United States, know it’s just about time to colonize those islands back to save them from themselves.
I thought it said British Muslim
*laughs in Serbian stealing American plane*
