If you heard about Dave grohls argument about this it made me laugh.
@Stuart Pot, Thank you, I just looked it up and enjoyed his opinion thoroughly. I agree; if you're a musician at heart, the only thing that should matter is that your music is heard, regardless of profit.
@La Villa Strangiato, you still need money for equipment & co
@Wrestle Quotes, Well, I can't disagree with that. But a lot of starting musicians will save up money for this equipment when they're younger, and they'll already have a good amount when they're ready to be playing shows.
@La Villa Strangiato, as someone who fits that description...no. Equipment costs ALOT. Not to mention repairs etc.. It takes much effort to make enough money to actually keep money. Unless you'signed to somewhere ofcourse.
@Stuart Pot, it probably helps that he's almost a billionaire, and has been part of two of the most influential bands of the past 25 years.
@Wrestle Quotes, Ok, I apologize because I guess I've underestimated the cost of equipment. I work a minimum wage job ($8), but I still live with my parents so I didn't factor in cost of living. I apologize, and I hope I didn't offend you by unintentionally playing down the amount of work that goes into it.
@La Villa Strangiato, no worries^^ It's something most people think (and so did I) because most musicians we hear about are on a certain level already.
@Wrestle Quotes, Thanks, and that's true. Just out of curiosity, what genres/instruments do you play? I like mostly sychedelic, and I'm a bass player. I haven't really found anyone with similar tastes to jam with yet.
@La Villa Strangiato, well...I play keyboard and background vocals in my band. We don't really have one genre (unless you count Bluecore). It varies from Punk, Metal and Alternative Rock to additional Blues & now Reggae...
@Wrestle Quotes, That's actually pretty cool, I'm big into keyboards and synthesizers, even though I can't play 'em, haha. Good variety too, you can never go wrong with rock.
@Wrestle Quotes, you're band sounds cool do you have anything online yet to listen to?
@Andrewbrame, nothing of quality xD. We're in the mid of recording a demo tape.
@Wrestle Quotes, definitely let me know when that demo tape is done I'll buy a copy of it from you if you sell it
@Stuart Pot, young Dave Grohl while apart of Nirvan those guys still toured in their van when they made it big .. It used to be about the music not the money there are some artist who still relise that
Fun fact: it takes 15,000 plays on spotify for an artist to get $4.20. The only artists who can attribute a good portion of their income to spotify are Kanye West and Lady Gaga.
@I Broke Benjamin, Artists get most of their income from touring and merch sales anyway, so that doesn't matter.
Good ol' spoofy
@I Broke Benjamin, but what is the alternative? Release an album at $20 each, and risk it being ripped to MP3 and distributed illegally online? I'd say $4.20/15,000 plays is a good compensation. Certainly more then YouTube would offer.
@Shadow Storm, way better than YouTube, but still not good
@I Broke Benjamin, Music streaming is a bit of a ripoff, but if you love sharing your music with others, the profit you're making shouldn't matter. The greatest artists don't care about what they get payed. They play because they love it.
@I Broke Benjamin, just did a quick calculation... 1 million plays is only worth $280. You're right. Absolutely not enough.
@La Villa Strangiato, that's no less than true, but the issue of a fair wage comes up, especially with major label contracts that are mostly designed to net money for the label and not the artist
@I Broke Benjamin, I can't argue with that. As someone who plays instruments and would love to do so for a living, I would never contract with a major, money-hungry label. But sadly there aren't many other options.
@La Villa Strangiato, yeah, the options are very limited, unfortunately. Minor/Indie labels don't give you access to nearly as many resources for growth, and total independence would leave you paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to create an album. Also, to quote Serj Tankian, the record industry is always behind the times. That's why it took a computer company to start iTunes.
@CriTiKa1, how does it not matter? It takes away from the artist. If a song on iTunes sells for $1.29, and even if the artist only gets $.01 per song bought, it would only take 420 people to buy the song as opposed to 15,000 to listen to it. I'd like to make as much money as possible and I bet you would too
@Reydel, When you're making art your main goal shouldn't be making money, it should be making something that you and others can enjoy. And like I said, artists make almost all of their money from tours and merch sales. Record companies take most of the money from song and album sales.
She might claim it's money but I think it was that one Spotify commercial that got her mad " Rihanna... Skip, Nicki Minaj... Skip, Taylor Swift... Skip, need unlimited skips? Switch to Spotify premium.
In all fairness, did you guys hear that the lead singer of Creed was homeless?
@niffler, that's because Creed sounds like garbage.
@His Infernal Majesty, I would make an argument but I don't know who creed is.
@niffler, yeah I heard it and he's now on psychiatric hold. Never listened to their music but it does suck to hear
@niffler, that could've been due to poor spending habits
@The Megaton Bomb, they were bigger in the 90s early 2000s
@Nuclear Torpedo, thats true but its kinda sad to hear that someone that was succesfull has fallen so far
@niffler, Not really sad. If someone successful falls all the way down, they were stupid and made stupid choices.
@CriTiKa1, that's a hasty generalization
@CriTiKa1, Making stupid choices doesn't make one stupid. You don't know the circumstances that put him in the situation.
@niffler, Stupid people make stupid choices. Simple as that.
@funny pic veteran, If you go from having millions of dollars to having nothing you are a fvcking idiot.
@CriTiKa1, artist lose money from not having the popularity, and it's not always their fault. Like niffler said you don't always know the outcome of choices.
@CriTiKa1, I read in a magazine an article about some idiot that won division 1 lottery, and within 2 years, was back on government handouts due to drugs, alcohol and loose women.
@funny pic veteran, Just because you aren't popular doesn't mean you have to make stupid spending decisions. Anyone with a brain wouldn't spend every cent they have.
@CriTiKa1, and a lot of them don't but over the years of falling off the charts their funds deplete
@Shadow Storm, This happens a lot actually, people don't know how to handle a ton of money and end up spending it all instead of saving or investing some of it.
@funny pic veteran, If you're not getting as much income as before, the obvious response is to change your spending habits so that you won't go broke like Scott did.
@niffler, It's God's plan
@niffler, he got addicted to prescription pain killers after he injured his back.
How dare she assert artistic integrity of her intellectual property!
Taylor is Swift at making money.
Thought this was p!nk when I first saw it
I understand wanting to get paid for your music but she isn't exactly living a hard life.
The vast majority of bands don't make anywhere near that kind of money
Oh no now she cant afford the jumbo size personal jet
Who actually listens to the garbage she passes off as music she's terrible and can't sing, better yet she literally talks about nonsense and puts with an awful beat
I don't like spotify anyway, they never have anything good.
Jason aldean did it to what a douce bag
